Nonlinear Parameterization In Bi-Criteria Sample Balancing, Stan Lipovetsky
Nonlinear Parameterization In Bi-Criteria Sample Balancing, Stan Lipovetsky
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
Sample balancing is widely used in applied research to adjust a sample data to achieve better correspondence to Census statistics. The classic Deming-Stephan iterative proportional approach finds the weights of observations by fitting the cross-tables of sample counts to known margins. This work considers a bi-criteria objective for finding weights with maximum possible effective base size. This approach is presented as a ridge regression with the exponential nonlinear parameterization that produces nonnegative weights for sample balancing.

Jmasm30 Pi-Lca: A Sas Program Computing The Two-Point Mixture Index Of Fit For Two-Class Lca Models With Dichotomous Variables (Sas), Dongquan Zhang, C. Mitchell Dayton
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
The two-point mixture index of fit enjoys some desirable features in model fit assessment and model selection, however, a need exists for efficient computational strategies. Applying an NLP algorithm, a program using the SAS matrix language is presented to estimate the two-point index of fit for two-class LCA models with dichotomous response variables. The program offers a tool to compute π ∗ for twoclass models and it also provides an alternative program for conducting latent class analysis with SAS. This study builds a foundation for further research on computational approaches for M-class models.

This repeated measures psychophysiology experiment studied three responses to a past interpersonal offense (38 females and 33 males). We compared rumination with two offense reappraisal strategies. Compassion-focused reappraisal emphasized the offender's humanity, and interpreted the transgression as evidence of the offender's need for positive transformation. Benefit-focused reappraisal emphasized insights gained or strengths shown in facing the offense. Supporting the manipulations, compassion-focused reappraisal stimulated the most empathy and forgiveness, whereas benefit-focused reappraisal prompted the most benefit language and gratitude. Both reappraisals decreased aroused, negative emotion, and related facial muscle tension at the brow (corrugator). Both reappraisals increased happiness and positive emotion …

For my Senior Honors Project I participated in the Climate Change Collaborative, which is a new interdisciplinary research project studying the ways in which coastal communities in Rhode Island can better adapt to the environmental, cultural and economic consequences of climate change. As a member of this collaborative, I worked in a vertically integrated team of faculty (psychology researchers, climate scientists and communications science practitioners and researchers) as well as undergraduate and graduate students, to begin an endeavor through which behavior change will be assessed in regards to climate change. For the purposes of this study, we specifically focus on …
Fire Effects On Wildlife In Tallgrass Prairie, Maria Gaetani, Kayla Cook, Sherry Leis
Fire Effects On Wildlife In Tallgrass Prairie, Maria Gaetani, Kayla Cook, Sherry Leis
United States National Park Service: Publications
Abstract
In the tallgrass prairie region of North America, grasslands are often burned on a rotational schedule to prevent the encroachment of woody species and maintain the vigor of plant communities. Although prescribed fire practitioners often consider the effects of fire on plant communities, the effects of fire on wildlife are also important. Practitioners as well as park visitors inquire about the effects of fire on birds, deer, and other animals of interest. Many wildlife species focus on vegetation structure in choosing suitable habitats, and fire can temporarily alter that structure. Wildlife species have varying habitat needs, and therefore, a …

Another Look At Resampling: Replenishing Small Samples With Virtual Data Through S-Smart, Haiyan Bai, Wei Pan, Leigh Lihshing Wang, Phillip Neal Ritchey
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
A new resampling method is introduced to generate virtual data through a smoothing technique for replenishing small samples. The replenished analyzable sample retains the statistical properties of the original small sample, has small standard errors and possesses adequate statistical power.
Estimations On The Generalized Exponential Distribution Using Grouped Data, Hassan Pazira, Parviz Nasiri
Estimations On The Generalized Exponential Distribution Using Grouped Data, Hassan Pazira, Parviz Nasiri
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
Classical and Bayesian estimators are obtained for the shape parameter of the Generalized-Exponential distribution under grouped data. In Bayesian estimation, three types of loss functions are considered: the Squared Error loss function which is classified as a symmetric function, the LINEX and Precautionary loss functions which are asymmetric. These estimators are compared with the corresponding estimators derived from un-grouped data empirically using Monte-Carlo simulation.
Symmetry Plus Quasi Uniform Association Model And Its Orthogonal Decomposition For Square Contingency Tables, Kouji Yamamoto, Sadao Tomizawa
Symmetry Plus Quasi Uniform Association Model And Its Orthogonal Decomposition For Square Contingency Tables, Kouji Yamamoto, Sadao Tomizawa
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
A model is proposed having the structure of both symmetry and quasi-uniform association (SQU model) and provides a decomposition of the SQU model. It is also shown with examples that the test statistic for goodness-of-fit of the SQU model is asymptotically equivalent to the sum of those for the decomposed models.

Applying Multiple Imputation With Geostatistical Models To Account For Item Nonresponse In Environmental Data, Breda Munoz, Virginia M. Lesser, Ruben A. Smith
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
Methods proposed to solve the missing data problem in estimation procedures should consider the type of missing data, the missing data mechanism, the sampling design and the availability of auxiliary variables correlated with the process of interest. This article explores the use of geostatistical models with multiple imputation to deal with missing data in environmental surveys. The method is applied to the analysis of data generated from a probability survey to estimate Coho salmon abundance in streams located in western Oregon watersheds.
Beyond Alpha: Lower Bounds For The Reliability Of Tests, Nol Bendermacher
Beyond Alpha: Lower Bounds For The Reliability Of Tests, Nol Bendermacher
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
The most common lower bound to the reliability of a test is Cronbach’s alpha. However, several lower bounds exist that are definitely better, that is, higher than alpha. An overview is given as well as an algorithm to find the best: the greatest lower bound.

Combining Independent Tests Of Conditional Shifted Exponential Distribution, Abedel-Qader S. Al-Masri
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
The problem of combining n independent tests as n→∞ for testing that variables are uniformly distributed over the interval (0, 1) compared to their having a conditional shifted exponential distribution with probability density function f (xθ ) = e−(x−γθ) , x ≥γθ , θ ∈[a,∞), a ≥ 0 was studied. This was examined for the case where θ1, θ2, … are distributed according to the distribution function (DF) F and when the DF is Gamma (1, 2). Six omnibus methods were compared via the Bahadur efficiency. It is shown that, as γ → 0 and …
A Comparative Study For Bandwidth Selection In Kernel Density Estimation, Omar M. Eidous, Mohammad Abd Alrahem Shafeq Marie, Mohammed H. Baker Al-Haj Ebrahem
A Comparative Study For Bandwidth Selection In Kernel Density Estimation, Omar M. Eidous, Mohammad Abd Alrahem Shafeq Marie, Mohammed H. Baker Al-Haj Ebrahem
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
Nonparametric kernel density estimation method does not make any assumptions regarding the functional form of curves of interest; hence it allows flexible modeling of data. A crucial problem in kernel density estimation method is how to determine the bandwidth (smoothing) parameter. This article examines the most important bandwidth selection methods, in particular, least squares cross-validation, biased crossvalidation, direct plug-in, solve-the-equation rules and contrast methods. Methods are described and expressions are presented. The main practical contribution is a comparative simulation study that aims to isolate the most promising methods. The performance of each method is evaluated on the basis of the …
On Robustification Of Some Procedures Used In Analysis Of Covariance, Kuanwong Watcharotone
On Robustification Of Some Procedures Used In Analysis Of Covariance, Kuanwong Watcharotone
Dissertations
This study discusses robust procedures for the analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) models. These methods are based on rank-based (R) fitting procedures, which are quite analogous to the traditional ANCOVA methods based on least squares fits. Our initial empirical results show that the validity of R procedures is similar to the least squares procedures. In terms of power, there is a small loss in efficiency to least squares methods when the random errors have a normal distribution but the rank-based procedures are much more powerful for the heavy-tailed error distributions in our study.
Rank-based analogs are also developed for pick-a-point, adjusted …

There are nearly 2.5 million couples getting married in the United States each year (Harrison, 2008, pg. xi). That breaks down to more than 6,300 weddings in a single day. The average wedding in the United States “produces 63 tones of CO2 and 400-600 pounds of trash” and therefore, newlyweds are creating over 3,500,000 pounds of trash in a single at their weddings (Harrison, 2009, ¶ 2)! The green movement is on the rise and wedding industry needs to implement it to meet new demands. In order to do people need to be informed of the importance, benefits and savings …
Adaptive Management Of Complex Environmental Problems – Comparison Of National Nuclear Waste Management Policies, Carmel Letourneau
Adaptive Management Of Complex Environmental Problems – Comparison Of National Nuclear Waste Management Policies, Carmel Letourneau
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Many of today's challenging environmental problems, to the point of manifesting themselves on a scale that has global, political consequences, likely result from long-term evolutionary developmental processes. The degree to which humans can manage the evolution of these problems remains an open question. Faced with such challenges, since the mid 1980s, an increasing number of scholars have developed other forms of management, in particular, adaptive management. Scholars suggest that improving the performance of adaptive management requires that environmental problems be understood as 'complex', open, evolving systems of interacting social and environmental subsystems. To date, narrative has been the primary approach …

A Comparative Study On Text Categorization, Aditya Chainulu Karamcheti
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Automated text categorization is a supervised learning task, defined as assigning category labels to new documents based on likelihood suggested by a training set of labeled documents. Two examples of methodology for text categorizations are Naive Bayes and K-Nearest Neighbor.
In this thesis, we implement two categorization engines based on Naive Bayes and K-Nearest Neighbor methodology. We then compare the effectiveness of these two engines by calculating standard precision and recall for a collection of documents. We will further report on time efficiency of these two engines.

Transforming Space Into Place: Development, Rock Climbing, And Interpretation In Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, 1960-2010, Megan Sharp Weatherly
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Though Americans tend to view wilderness as separate from nature, environmental historians have argued that wilderness is a cultural construct more than a quantifiable geographic category. Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area (NCA), a 195,000-acre tract located west of Las Vegas, Nevada, is one such cultural construction. Since 1960, this BLM-managed parcel has served as a local and regional expression of broader, national trends in outdoor recreation, interpretation, and development and thereby forced visitors to engage (often unknowingly) in a cultural dialogue about consumerism, technology, and identity. With information from newspapers, archival collections, oral histories, and government documents, this thesis …
The Integration Of Biomimicry Into A Built Environment Design Process Model: An Alternative Approach Towards Hydro-Infrastructure, Timothy Lee Albertson
The Integration Of Biomimicry Into A Built Environment Design Process Model: An Alternative Approach Towards Hydro-Infrastructure, Timothy Lee Albertson
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Current methods and processes that support the planning, design and construction of a sustainable built environment include ambiguous principles (Roseland 2000), lack feedback loops (Van Bueren and Jong 2007) and lack a common language between disciplines (Brandon et al 1997). As a result of 3.8 billion years of "research and development" (evolution), nature provides a set of design blueprints that may be used to guide us to create elegant, sustainable, and innovative designs for human technologies (Benyus 1997). The field of biomimicry analyzes nature's best ideas and adapts them for human use (Benyus 1997). The built environment could benefit from …

The Postsecret Phenomenon: A Contemporary Application Of Existential Psychotherapy, Dan Martin
Senior Honors Projects
In November 2004, as a whimsical break from his monotonous job, Frank Warren decided he would start a small art project in his community. This idea, which he entitled “PostSecret,” involved leaving blank post cards in various public locations that simply asked to “Share a Secret” and listed a few guidelines. Frank’s goal was to “create this non-judgmental, safe place where people could feel comfortable sharing parts of their lives that they've never told a soul.” What he expected to be a small result became a weekly blog, five published books, a traveling art gallery, and a lecture series given …
Fire On The Mountain: Growth And Conflict In Colorado Ski Country, Michael W. Childers
Fire On The Mountain: Growth And Conflict In Colorado Ski Country, Michael W. Childers
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
This dissertation examines the environmental, economic, and cultural conflicts over the private development of ski resorts in Colorado's National Forests between 1910 and 2000. Downhill skiing emerged as an increasingly popular winter activity during the first half of the twentieth century, particularly in western state such as Colorado. A part of the a larger outdoor recreational boom throughout the United States' during the interwar years, downhill skiing challenged the Forest Service's ability to meeting the public's growing appetite for year-round recreational opportunities. These challenges increased following World War II as the nation's growing population and affluence drew millions to their …

A Comparative Study To Identify Factors Affecting Adoption Of Soil And Water Conservation Practices Among Smallhold Farmers In The Njoro River Watershed Of Kenya, Steven P. Huckett
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Natural resource conservation is important for human well-being, especially in fragile environments of developing countries. This study occurred in 2006 among 6,500 smallhold farmers residing along a 25-km segment of a heavily utilized river. Research objectives were to determine use and adoption constraints for 14 soil and water conservation practices (SWCPs). Farms were reportedly contributing to a decline in river water quality via soil erosion. Recent occupation of the upper watershed by immigrants magnified concerns that resource degradation could escalate. A multi-method approach incorporating quantitative surveys, qualitative interviews, and participant observation was used to interpret constraining factors within the biophysical …

Three Essays On Environmental- And Spatial-Based Valuation Of Urban Land And Housing, Lu Liu
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This dissertation attempts to provide a comprehensive examination on the non-market valuation of the effect of open space amenities and local public infrastructure on the value of urban land and housing with both spatial heterogeneity and project heterogeneity. The demand for raw land is a derived demand for housing built on it. Therefore, we need to examine the land market and the housing market together. On the one hand, we estimate the value of urban land in a market that does not satisfy the usual assumptions of a competitive market structure as well as incentive incompatibility issues for transaction participants, …

Random Forests Applied As A Soil Spatial Predictive Model In Arid Utah, Alexander Knell Stum
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Initial soil surveys are incomplete for large tracts of public land in the western USA. Digital soil mapping offers a quantitative approach as an alternative to traditional soil mapping. I sought to predict soil classes across an arid to semiarid watershed of western Utah by applying random forests (RF) and using environmental covariates derived from Landsat 7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) and digital elevation models (DEM). Random forests are similar to classification and regression trees (CART). However, RF is doubly random. Many (e.g., 500) weak trees are grown (trained) independently because each tree is trained with a new randomly …
