On The Estimation Of Binomial Success Probability With Zero Occurrence In Sample, Mehdi Razzaghi
On The Estimation Of Binomial Success Probability With Zero Occurrence In Sample, Mehdi Razzaghi
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
The problem of estimating the probability of a rare event when the sample shows no incidence of the event is considered. Several methodologies based on various statistical techniques are described and their relative performances are investigated. A decision theoretic approach for estimation of response probability when the sample contains zero responses is examined in depth. The properties of each method are discussed and an example from teratology is used to provide illustration and to demonstrate the results.

Null Distribution Of The Likelihood Ratio Statistic For Feed-Forward Neural Networks, Douglas Landsittel, Harshinder Singh, Vincent C. Arena, Stewart J. Anderson
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
Despite recent publications exploring model complexity with modern regression methods, their dimensionality is rarely quantified in practice and the distributions of related test statistics are not well characterized. Through a simulation study, we describe the null distribution of the likelihood ratio statistic for several different feed-forward neural network models.

A Simulation Study Of The Impact Of Forecast Recovery For Control Charts Applied To Arma Processes, John N. Dyer, B. Michael Adams, Michael D. Conerly
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
Forecast-based schemes are often used to monitor autocorrelated processes, but the resulting forecast recovery has a significant effect on the performance of control charts. This article describes forecast recovery for autocorrelated processes, and the resulting simulation study is used to explain the performance of control charts applied to forecast errors.

Accounting For Non-Independent Observations In 2×2 Tables, With Application To Correcting For Family Clustering In Exposure-Risk Relationship Studies, Leslie A. Kalsih, Katherine A. Riester, Stuart J. Pocock
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
Participants in epidemiologic studies may not represent statistically independent observations. We consider modifications to conventional analyses of 2×2 tables, including Fisher’s exact test and confidence intervals, to account for correlated observations in this setting. An example is provided, assessing the robustness of conclusions from a published analysis.
Combining Quantum Mechanical Calculations And A Χ^2 Fit In A Potential Energy Function For The Co_2 + O^+ Reaction, Ellen F. Sawilowsky
Combining Quantum Mechanical Calculations And A Χ^2 Fit In A Potential Energy Function For The Co_2 + O^+ Reaction, Ellen F. Sawilowsky
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
In order to compute a highly accurate statistical rate constant for the CO2 + O+ reaction, it is necessary to first calculate the potential energy of the system at many different geometric configurations. Quantum mechanical calculations are very time-consuming, making it difficult to obtain a sufficient number to allow for accurate interpolation. The number of quantum mechanical calculations required can be significantly reduced by using known relations in classical physics to calculate energy for configurations where the oxygen is relatively far from the CO2. A chi-squared fit to quantum mechanical points is obtained for these configurations, and the resulting …
Type I Error Rates For Rank-Based Tests Of Homogeneity Of Slopes, Alan J. Klockars, Tim P. Moses
Type I Error Rates For Rank-Based Tests Of Homogeneity Of Slopes, Alan J. Klockars, Tim P. Moses
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
The purpose of this study was to explicate two issues concerning the standard and rank based test of homogeneity of slopes. Two alternative ranking methods intended to address nonnormality and additive treatment effect patterns were developed and compared in terms of their ability to control Type I error. The results replicated previous findings of inflated Type I error rates with leptokurtic curves and with rank based tests with some patterns of additive treatment effects. The new nonparametric procedures generally control Type I error although they were slightly inflated with skewed distributions.
Exploration Of Distributions Of Ratio Of Partial Sum Of Sample Eigenvalues When All Population Eigenvalues Are The Same, Moonseong Heo
Exploration Of Distributions Of Ratio Of Partial Sum Of Sample Eigenvalues When All Population Eigenvalues Are The Same, Moonseong Heo
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
This paper explores empirically the first two moments of ratio of the partial sum of the first two sample eigenvalues to the sum of all eigenvalues when the population eigenvalues of a covariance matrix are all the same. Estimation of the first two moments can be practically crucial in assessing non-randomness of observed patterns on planar graphical displays based on lower rank approximations of data matrices. For derivation of the moments, exact and large sample asymptotic distributions of the sample ratios are reviewed but neither can be applicable to derivation of the moments. Therefore, I rely on simulations, where data …
On Distribution Function Estimation Using Double Ranked Set Samples With Application, Walid A. Abu-Dayyeh, Hani M. Samawi, Lara A. Bani-Hani
On Distribution Function Estimation Using Double Ranked Set Samples With Application, Walid A. Abu-Dayyeh, Hani M. Samawi, Lara A. Bani-Hani
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
As a variation of ranked set sampling (RSS); double ranked set sampling (DRSS) was introduced by Al-Saleh and Al-Kadiri (2000), and it has been used only for estimating the mean of the population. In this paper DRSS will be used for estimating the distribution function (cdf). The efficiency of the proposed estimators will be obtained when ranking is perfect. Some inference on the distribution function will be drawn based on Kolomgrov-Smirnov statistic. It will be shown that using DRSS will increase the efficiency in this case.

Chronic Disease Data And Analysis: Current State Of The Field, Ralph D'Agostino Sr., Lisa M. Sullivan
Chronic Disease Data And Analysis: Current State Of The Field, Ralph D'Agostino Sr., Lisa M. Sullivan
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
Chronic disease usually spans years of a person’s lifetime and includes a disease free period, a preclinical, or latent period, where there are few overt signs of disease, a clinical period where the disease manifests and is eventually diagnosed, and a follow-up period where the disease might progress steadily or remain stable. It is often of interest to investigate the relationship between risk factors measured at a point in time (usually during the disease free or preclinical period), and the development of disease at some future point (e.g., 10 years later). We outline some popular designs for the identification of …

Web Services are increasingly being adapted by Enterprises as the new approach to component-based solutions for enterprise applications. They hold potential to transform Web from a collection of information resources to a distributed computing platform. Many enterprise applications, including those supporting e-commerce take a form of processes, which need to be created from individual Web Services and other software components.

Adaptive Management: What Does It Mean And How Can It Be Used In Fire Management?, R. J. Whelan
Adaptive Management: What Does It Mean And How Can It Be Used In Fire Management?, R. J. Whelan
Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)
‘Adaptive Management’ is becoming a frequently heard term but it is a much misunderstood concept. It does not mean that developments can go ahead and be ‘adapted’ if detrimental effects are discovered! Its greatest value is in defining an experimental approach to land management in situations where scientific knowledge is lacking but where immediate actions are required. This is especially important where doing nothing might conceivably be just as undesirable as applying any of the alternative management options. Given the lack of knowledge of fire responses of much of our native biota, adaptive management is clearly a sensible approach to …

Meridian Hill Park: The Making Of An American Neoclassical Landscape, Elizabeth Brabec
Meridian Hill Park: The Making Of An American Neoclassical Landscape, Elizabeth Brabec
Landscape Architecture & Regional Planning Faculty Publication Series
The neoclassical design was the dominant design movement in landscape architecture at the turn of the last century, dictating the form and design of public parks for most of the first half of the twentieth century. Meridian Hill Park, located just north of the White ouse in Washington, DC, is considered the most ambitious neoclassical park ever conceived in the United States. The paper provides an overview of the design development of the park, illustrating how classical design precedents were used to create a contemporary neo-classical park.

The Tide Is High For The Boston Beaches, Marissa Glowac
The Tide Is High For The Boston Beaches, Marissa Glowac
New England Journal of Public Policy
In 1993, Massachusetts Governor William Weld and Boston Mayor Thomas Menino approved the “Back to the Beaches” project, a seven-year, $30.5 million public project to restore nineteen Boston Harbor beaches. Today, these sites have new, cleaner sand, improved access, and new amenities and facilities now ready to offer additional opportunities for recreation. People are coming back to the Boston Harbor beaches in numbers significantly higher than a decade ago. This study concludes that the implementation and success of the “Back to the Beaches” project can be attributed to several factors — an increased public awareness of the value of open …

Reseeding Of Grazing Gastropods And Bivalves Into The Marine Environment In Western Australia, Jane Borg
Reseeding Of Grazing Gastropods And Bivalves Into The Marine Environment In Western Australia, Jane Borg
Fisheries management papers
The Department of Fisheries does not want to embark on what is ‘new territory’ in Western Australia without a policy framework to define what is to happen, why it is to happen, and what will happen if the project does or does not succeed. This paper therefore attempts to do three things. 1. It sets in place accepted definitions of reseeding and stock enhancement within the general context of fisheries management in Western Australia. 2. It discusses the policy issues associated with reseeding grazing gastropods and bivalves into the natural environment. 3. It proposes a framework or process to be …
Clinically Relevant Aspects Of Chronic Pain: Normal Personality Predictors, Stephen Ray Nitch
Clinically Relevant Aspects Of Chronic Pain: Normal Personality Predictors, Stephen Ray Nitch
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
This study examined the normal personality characteristics of chronic pain patients using cluster analysis. To date, much of the research involving chronic pain and personality has assumed that signs of psychopathology are likely to be present (Jay, Grove, and Grove, 1987; Love and Peck, 1987). There have been some exceptions to this trend by researchers who sought to measure the normal personality structure of individuals with chronic pain (see Wade, Dougherty, Hart, and Cook, 1992). One of central aims of the current study was to further refine the psychosocial taxonomy of chronic pain patients by paying more attention to individual …
Challenges, Strategies, And Tools For Research Scientists: Using Web-Based Information Resources, Danielle Bodrero Hoggan
Challenges, Strategies, And Tools For Research Scientists: Using Web-Based Information Resources, Danielle Bodrero Hoggan
E-JASL 1999-2009 (Volumes 1-10)
Scientists face many challenges in harnessing web-based resources. Information overload, misinformation, fees, poorly designed navigation, and loss of browsability all hamper the scientist searcher. In addition, many scientists rely on only one or two databases and often miss unique information that is available through other sources. Librarians can team up with scientists to develop strategies to overcome the challenges of web-based information. For example, a librarian can teach effective information seeking techniques, including how to use controlled vocabularies, how to evaluate information on the web, and how to complement web-based resources with print resources. Librarians can also help scientists to …

Applying Xml/Xslt Technology: A Case Study, Krishnaprasad Thirunarayan
Kno.e.sis Publications
Typically, paper-based semi-structured documents are used to communicate technical requirements in the industry. One approach to improving the efficiency and flexibility of searching and manipulating these documents is to obtain them in electronic form, and then make explicit the technical content in a form amenable to pattern matching and symbol manipulation. This paper explores the role of XML Technology for these purposes: the use of XML language to make explicit the content of a document in a standard fashion, and the use of XSLT to manipulate the content and mediate between applications that need this content. In order to recognize …
Implementing Qos Management For Workflow Systems, Jorge Cardoso, Amit P. Sheth, Krzysztof J. Kochut
Implementing Qos Management For Workflow Systems, Jorge Cardoso, Amit P. Sheth, Krzysztof J. Kochut
Kno.e.sis Publications
Workflow management systems (WfMSs) have been used to support various types of business processes. As organizations adopt new working models, such as e-commerce, new challenges arise for workflow systems. One such challenge is that of quality of service (QoS) management. QoS management includes mechanisms that specify, compute, monitor, and control the quality of service of the products or services to be delivered. A good management of QoS directly impacts the success of organizations participating in e-commerce activities by better fulfilling customer expectations and achieving customer satisfaction. In this paper we present an implementation of a comprehensive QoS model for workflows …

Leadership Antecedents Of Informal Knowledge Acquisition And Dissemination, Siu Loon Hoe, Steve Mcshane
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Knowledge management is emerging as one of the leading influences on an organisation’s survival and competitive advantage (Blumentritt & Johnston 1999). Knowledge management is concerned with the effective acquisition, sharing, storage and utilisation of knowledge (Huber 1991; Saffady 1998). Corporate leaders are increasingly aware of the notion that an organisation’s long-term survival depends on its ability to generate new knowledge and continuously learn from the environment. The importance of a superior organisational learning capability as a source of competitive advantage is a common refrain among both managers and scholars (e.g. Kohli & Jaworski 1990; Nonaka 1991; Quinn 1992; Slater & …
