Martellia And Associated Middle Ordovician Brachiopods From The Katkoyeh Formation, East-Central Iran, Ian G. Percival, Anthony J. Wright, Robert S. Nicoll, Mir Alireza Hamedi Apr 2014

Martellia And Associated Middle Ordovician Brachiopods From The Katkoyeh Formation, East-Central Iran, Ian G. Percival, Anthony J. Wright, Robert S. Nicoll, Mir Alireza Hamedi

Anthony Wright

The palaeontology and stratigraphy of the Ordovician if Iran has been the subject of considerable research over the past 15 years, revealing biogeographically significant faunas whose affinities are shared both with peri-Gondwanian terranes and continental blocks. Documentation of the composition and ages of these faunas, many of which are still poorly known, is critical to constraining palaeogeographic reconstructions of the time.

Septal Architecture And Palaeoecology Of Calceola (Cnidaria, Calceolidae), With Comments On The Phylogeny Of Devonian Operculate Tetracorals, Anthony J. Wright Apr 2014

Septal Architecture And Palaeoecology Of Calceola (Cnidaria, Calceolidae), With Comments On The Phylogeny Of Devonian Operculate Tetracorals, Anthony J. Wright

Anthony Wright

In Calceola sandalina the full complement of counter major septa was established very low in the calyx, extending from the counter septum across to the edge of the counter face. At about mid-height of the calyx, a counter-lateral major septum was generated on either side of and from the counter septum. Serial minor septal insertion was initiated adjacent to the counter-lateral septa at a slightly later stage and continued throughout the subsequent ontogeny of the corallite, with minor septa (schizosepta?) arising on the median side of major septa and bifurcating from them. Alar fossulae are seen in the calyx of …

The Asaphid Trilobite Ogygites Collingwoodensis Reed, 1926 From The Late Ordovician Of New Zealand, Anthony J. Wright Apr 2014

The Asaphid Trilobite Ogygites Collingwoodensis Reed, 1926 From The Late Ordovician Of New Zealand, Anthony J. Wright

Anthony Wright

The New Zealand asaphid trilobite Ogygites collingwoodensis is redescribed on the basis of the type material and new collections, and its assignment to Basiliella is confirmed. The species occurs with the trinucleid trilobite Incaia bishopi and graptolites indicative of the Nemagraptus gracilis zone (early Late Ordovician, early Sandbian/Gisbornian), mostly as disarticulated material in intensely bioturbated siltstone of the Douglas Formation. Comparison with coeval faunas is limited due to the low diversity of this fauna, but B. collingwoodensis shows some limited similarity to contemporaneous eastern Australian faunas, whereas Incaia also occurs in South America and South China.

Darriwilian (Middle Ordovician) Conodonts From Thompson Creek, Nelson Province, New Zealand, Yong Yi Zhen, Ian G. Percival, Roger A. Cooper, John E. Simes, Anthony J. Wright Apr 2014

Darriwilian (Middle Ordovician) Conodonts From Thompson Creek, Nelson Province, New Zealand, Yong Yi Zhen, Ian G. Percival, Roger A. Cooper, John E. Simes, Anthony J. Wright

Anthony Wright

A well preserved Middle Ordovician conodont fauna of 24 species has been recovered from seven samples of a small limestone lens exposed in Thompson Creek, northwest of Nelson, on the South Island of New Zealand. The presence of Histiodella holodentata, Baltoniodus? sp., Paroistodus originalis, P. horridus, Periodon macrodentatus, Protopanderodus sp. cf. P. varicostatus, Costiconus ethingtoni and Venoistodus balticus in the fauna indicates a Darriwilian (late Da2 to mid Da3) age. The occurrence of Ansella jemtlandica, Baltoniodus? sp., Periodon macrodentatus, Spinodus sp., Spinodus? sp. and Histiodella holodentata suggests a relatively deeper water (outer shelf to slope) setting, comparable with contemporaneous faunas, …

Middle Ordovician (Darriwilian) Brachiopods And Trilobites From Thompson Creek, Northwest Nelson, New Zealand, Ian G. Percival, Anthony J. Wright, Roger A. Cooper, John E. Simes, Yong Yi Zhen Apr 2014

Middle Ordovician (Darriwilian) Brachiopods And Trilobites From Thompson Creek, Northwest Nelson, New Zealand, Ian G. Percival, Anthony J. Wright, Roger A. Cooper, John E. Simes, Yong Yi Zhen

Anthony Wright

A well preserved Middle Ordovician shelly fauna, represented by twelve species of lingulate brachiopods and one trilobite genus, was recovered from an allochthonous limestone lens exposed in Thompson Creek, northwest of Nelson, on the South Island of New Zealand. The stratigraphic setting is unclear as the limestone is situated in the Takaka Terrane adjacent to the Anatoki Fault, separating this terrane from the Buller Terrane. The original depositional environment of the limestone is interpreted as relatively deep water (outer shelf to upper slope). Lingulate brachiopods described include the new species Hyperobolus? thompsonensis sp. nov., Cyrtonotreta robusta sp. nov., Scaphelasma paturauensis …

Social Media As An Educational Tool In University Level Geography, Elizabeth Hundey Apr 2014

Social Media As An Educational Tool In University Level Geography, Elizabeth Hundey

Beth J Hundey

Social media is not a passing fad—it is a new, versatile way of both information gathering and production. It is broadly defined as “networked tools that emphasize the social aspect of the Internet for communication, collaboration and creative expression” (Dabbagh & Kitsantas, 2012). Although many courses have online components (e.g. WebCT or other learning management systems), it is arguable that we as educators are not taking advantage of mainstream (i.e. applications and sites that are not education specific) social media to its full potential in the classroom. This short paper offers an outline of a seminar discussing the uses of …

An Outlier Robust Block Bootstrap For Small Area Estimation, Payam Mokhtarian, Ray Chambers Mar 2014

An Outlier Robust Block Bootstrap For Small Area Estimation, Payam Mokhtarian, Ray Chambers

Payam Mokhtarian

Small area inference based on mixed models, i.e. models that contain both fixed and random effects, are the industry standard for this field, allowing between area heterogeneity to be represented by random area effects. Use of the linear mixed model is ubiquitous in this context, with maximum likelihood, or its close relative, REML, the standard method for estimating the parameters of this model. These parameter estimates, and in particular the resulting predicted values of the random area effects, are then used to construct empirical best linear unbiased predictors (EBLUPs) of the unknown small area means. It is now well known …

A General Framework For Infrastructure System Reliability Modelling And Analysis, Payam Mokhtarian, Mohammad-Reza Namazi-Rad, Tin Kin Ho, Mahmoud Efatmaneshnik Mar 2014

A General Framework For Infrastructure System Reliability Modelling And Analysis, Payam Mokhtarian, Mohammad-Reza Namazi-Rad, Tin Kin Ho, Mahmoud Efatmaneshnik

Payam Mokhtarian

An infrastructure system is inherently complex, with layers of both explicitly defined and hidden or subtle interfaces with other infrastructure systems and human users. High availability is desired, which implies stringent requirements on reliability and safety. Reliability analysis typically starts at component or sub-system level and aggregates through the system functional hierarchy. Because of the system complexity, incorporating occurrences of all possible interactions and scenarios is not always practical and failure data is often limited. Moreover, there are unobserved events among the sub-systems distributing either randomly or with temporal trend. To facilitate reliability analysis amid the complex environment and uncertain …

Driver Dynamics And The Longitudinal Control Model, Gabriel Leiner Feb 2014

Driver Dynamics And The Longitudinal Control Model, Gabriel Leiner

Gabriel Leiner

Driver psychology is one of the most difficult phenomena to model in the realm of traffic flow theory because mathematics often cannot capture the human factors involved with driving a car. Over the past several decades, many models have attempted to model driver aggressiveness with varied results. The recently proposed Longitudinal Control Model (LCM) makes such an attempt, and this paper offers evidence of the LCM's usefulness in modeling road dynamics by analyzing deceleration rates that are commonly associated with various levels of aggression displayed by drivers. The paper is roughly divided into three sections, one outlining the LCM's ability …

Cyber Beyond Computers - The Environmental Aspect, Jan Kallberg

Jan Kallberg

A forgotten aspect on cyber and cyber conflicts impact on our society is the fact that tampering with our control systems can lead to industrial processes running amok - and lead to environmental damages. Threats to our environment is taken very serious by the population and pollution and contamination of our living space trigger drastic reactions.

Using Meta-Ethnography To Synthesize Research: A Worked Example Of The Relations Between Personality On Software Team Processes, Fabio Q. B. Silva Dr., Shirley S. J. O. Cruz, Tatiana B. Gouveia, Luiz Fernando Capretz Jan 2014

Using Meta-Ethnography To Synthesize Research: A Worked Example Of The Relations Between Personality On Software Team Processes, Fabio Q. B. Silva Dr., Shirley S. J. O. Cruz, Tatiana B. Gouveia, Luiz Fernando Capretz

Luiz Fernando Capretz

Context: The increase in the number of qualitative and mixed-methods research published in software engineering has created an opportunity for further knowledge generation through the synthesis of studies with similar aims. This is particularly true in the research on human aspects because the phenomena of interest are often better understood using qualitative research. However, the use of qualitative synthesis methods is not widespread and worked examples of their consistent application in software engineering are needed. Objective: To explore the use of meta-ethnography in the synthesis of empirical studies in software engineering through an example using studies about the relations between …

From Amazon To Apple: Modeling Online Retail Sales, Purchase Incidence And Visit Behavior, Anastasios Panagiotelis, Michael S. Smith, Peter Danaher Dec 2013

From Amazon To Apple: Modeling Online Retail Sales, Purchase Incidence And Visit Behavior, Anastasios Panagiotelis, Michael S. Smith, Peter Danaher

Michael Stanley Smith

In this study we propose a multivariate stochastic model for website visit duration, page views, purchase incidence and the sale amount for online retailers. The model is constructed by composition from carefully selected distributions, and involves copula components. It allows for the strong nonlinear relationships between the sales and visit variables to be explored in detail, and can be used to construct sales predictions. The model is readily estimated using maximum likelihood, making it an attractive choice in practice given the large sample sizes that are commonplace in online retail studies. We examine a number of top-ranked U.S. online retailers, …

Birds Of A Feather Deceive Together: The Chicanery Of Multiplied Metadata, David M. Cook Dec 2013

Birds Of A Feather Deceive Together: The Chicanery Of Multiplied Metadata, David M. Cook

Dr. David M Cook

New Media conventions have fluttered along unforeseen flight paths. By combining sock-puppetry with the grouping power of metadata it is possible to demonstrate widespread influence through Twitter dispersion. In one nest there is a growing use of sock-puppetry accentuated by the exploitation of a social media that does not attempt to verify proof of identity. Created identities in their thousands can flock towards, and in support of, a single identity. They do so alongside legitimate accounts but in concert remain imperceptible within an overall group. In another nest there is the practise of homophily, captured through metadata, and used to …

The Cobden-Chevalier Effect: Evaluating The Causal Effect Of The Most Favoured Nation Clause In Presence Of Network Interdependence, Luca De Benedictis, Silvia Nenci Dec 2013

The Cobden-Chevalier Effect: Evaluating The Causal Effect Of The Most Favoured Nation Clause In Presence Of Network Interdependence, Luca De Benedictis, Silvia Nenci

Luca De Benedictis

The purpose of this work is to evaluate the causal effect of the Network of the Cobden-Chevalier Treaties including the Most Favoured Nation (MFN) clause on trade flows of countries in the second half of the 19th century. This paper contributes to the literature on the topic in several ways. First, it applies up-to-date quantitative methods (i.e., nonparametric matching technique) to the study of historical phenomena. These methods permit to estimate the average MFN effect (the ``treatment") on the treated group of countries in terms of bilateral trade flows (the ``outcome"), rebalancing the control group without imposing any functional relationship …
