The Socioeconomic Impact Of Employing Female Deminers In Sri Lanka, Gichd
Global CWD Repository
This report outlines the key findings of the study looking at the socioeconomic impact of employing female deminers in Sri Lanka. 10 years after the first clearance operations in Sri Lanka, hundreds of Sri Lankan women and men are now employed in the Northern and Eastern parts of the country. The key findings highlight how employment has transformed female and male deminers’ capacity to access and own resources and services, as well as changes in female deminers’ decision-making capacities, how they perceive themselves, and shifts in their families’ and community members’ attitudes towards gender norms.

Black History at UNM
As UNM’s Communications and Marketing Department (UCAM) undertakes an effort to help educate the campus community involving the current Black Lives Matter movement through an extensive series covering an array of related subjects and areas that need work, it is important to note several historical moments in our nation’s history that have led us to this precipice we currently face as a nation. The first story in the series provides a brief historical background that takes us back to the 15th Century up to the Reconstruction Amendments (1865-70) that will help set the framework for the remaining stories in the …

Gender And Diversity Annual Report 2019, Gichd
Global CWD Repository
The Gender & Diversity Annual Report highlights the efforts made towards more gender and diversity inclusive practices at the GICHD. In 2018, the GICHD took the decision to elevate the topics of gender and diversity at the highest level of its new 2019-2022 Strategy. This included a strategic objective to promote gender equality and inclusion and the empowerment of women and girls. In March 2019, the Gender and Mine Action Programme (GMAP) and the GICHD entered in a new agreement which saw the integration of GMAP as a division of the GICHD. This decision not only reaffirmed the GICHD’s commitment …

Congressional Committee Resources On Space Policy During The 115th Congress (2017-2018): Providing Context And Insight Into Us Government Space Policy, Bert Chapman
Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations
Article 1 of the US Constitution assigns the US Congress numerous responsibilities. These include creating new laws, revising existing laws, funding government programs, and conducting oversight of these programs' performance. Oversight of US Government agency space policy programs is executed by various congressional space policy committees including the House and Senate Science Committees, Armed Services, and Appropriations Committees. These committees conduct many public hearings on space policy, which invite expert witnesses to testify on US space policy programs and feature debate on the strengths and weaknesses of these programs. Documentation produced by these committees is widely available to the public, …
Conflict Environments And Civil War Onset, Lindsay Reid, Rachel Myrick, Kelly M. Kadera, Mark J.C. Crescenzi
Conflict Environments And Civil War Onset, Lindsay Reid, Rachel Myrick, Kelly M. Kadera, Mark J.C. Crescenzi
Political Science Faculty Publications
The spread of civil war poses serious risks and costs. We argue that conflict environments, which vary across time and space, systematically exacerbate the spread of civil war. As conflict in a state’s neighborhood becomes more spatially proximate and as lingering effects of conflict accumulate over time, that state’s risk of civil war onset increases. To theorize and test this argument, we construct the conflict environment (CE) score, a concept that taps into spatial and temporal dimensions of violence in a state’s neighborhood. Using the CE score in established empirical models of civil war onset, we demonstrate that a …

Public statement from the University of New Mexico Black Faculty Alliance (BFA) condemning the criminal act of domestic anti-Black terrorism that includes the threat of a lynching directed toward Dr. Charles Becknell, Jr. and his family. Dr. Becknell, Jr. is the Director of the Africana Studies program in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of New Mexico. Among their suggested actions, the BFA calls for "the creation of a task force to develop a survivor-focused approach for an emergency response to hate-based threats against UNM Black faculty and a truth-telling commission to document systems and behaviors that …

Death Sentence To Civilians: The Long-Term Impact Of Explosive Weapons In Populated Areas In Yemen, Hi
Death Sentence To Civilians: The Long-Term Impact Of Explosive Weapons In Populated Areas In Yemen, Hi
Global CWD Repository
In Yemen, the massive use of explosive weapons with wide area effects in populated areas has not only had deadly consequences for civilians, but has also had a dramatic impact on the infrastructure and systems that civilians depend upon to access essential services. Yemen shows how the long-term or reverberating effects of explosive weapons use, referring to how the destruction of infrastructure has implications for the wider systems of services in a country, are just as deadly in a crisis as injuries from the explosion and even impact a greater number of people than those in the vicinity of the …
Corporate Leadership And Mass Atrocity, Sarah Federman
Corporate Leadership And Mass Atrocity, Sarah Federman
School of Peace Studies: Faculty Scholarship
With the last Holocaust survivors quietly passing away, one might also expect to see accountability debates slowing to a trickle. Surprisingly, however, recent years show an upswing in corporate World War II-related atonement debates. Interest in corporate participation in mass atrocity has expanded worldwide; yet what constitutes ethical corporate behavior during and after war remains understudied. This article considers these questions through a study of the French National Railways’ (SNCF) roles during the German occupation and its more recent struggle to make amends. This study demonstrates that ethical business leadership requires taking responsibility for past as well as current decisions. …

Religious Polarization And The Duration Of Civil Wars, Adrienne M. Poissant
Religious Polarization And The Duration Of Civil Wars, Adrienne M. Poissant
Student Publications
More and more research has begun to look at the impact that religion has on armed conflict. This paper takes a closer look at religious polarization and the impact that it has on the duration of civil wars. The central hypothesis focuses on the idea that polarized societies are less likely to reach a settlement in conflict; therefore, religious polarization should lengthen the duration of civil wars. The research compiled looks at the topic from a variety of different facets while paying attention to other possible contributing factors that can lengthen war and how religion in general plays a role …
