Croatian researchers from Zagreb University are training honeybees to detect landmines in the Balkans. By feeding the bees a solution of sugar and TNT, the insects learn to associate the scent of explosives with a possible food source.

Kenya is located on the eastern coast of Africa, bordered by Ethiopia, Somalia, South Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda. Although the country is largely unaffected by landmines and unexploded ordnance, the easy accessibility of small arms and light weapons poses a serious threat to national security. These weapons exacerbate regional conflicts and are especially detrimental in pastoral communities.

Following more than two decades of civil war between Northern and Southern Sudan, much of Southern Sudan has been left contaminated with landmines and explosive remnants of war. As a result, the Southern Sudan Demining Authority, along with the United Nations Development Programme, United Nations Mine Action Office and other organizations, have been diligently working toward clearing 80 percent of the mines in Southern Sudan by 2011.

Since 2007, the United Nations Mine Action Service has been implementing mine-action activities in Western Sahara. Although the parties to the conflict generally abide by a 1991 ceasefire, the expansive territory remains contaminated by an unknown quantity of mines and explosive remnants of war. The Mine Action Coordination Centre has provided technical coordination and quality assurance and plans to expand its mine-action operations.

Years of conflict between the Colombian government and the militant groupFuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia has left the country littered with landmines and millions of internally displaced persons. The Colombian government is trying to address this situation. The Bureau of Political-Military Affairs’ Office of Weapons Removal and Abatement in the U.S. Department of State is working with Colombian organizations and nongovernmenal organizations to clean up contaminated areas and resettle Colombia’s IDPs.

The Fund has supported the successful passage of disability-related legislation in Vietnam and is working for similar results elsewhere. In Africa, The Leahy War Victims Fund is spearheading the ambitious Omega Initiative, which aims to bring various types of aid to the countries of sub-Saharan Africa. Lloyd Feinberg represents the Fund on many fronts; he is widely respected and recognized as both an authority and a humanitarian.
