For thousands of years humankind has sought to explore our oceans. Evidence of this early intrigue dates back to 130,000 BCE, but the advent of remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) in the 1950s introduced technology that has had significant impact on ocean exploration. Today, ROVs play a critical role in both military (e.g. retrieving torpedoes and mines) and salvage operations (e.g. locating historic shipwrecks such as the RMS Titanic), and are crucial for oil and gas (O & G) exploration and operations. Industrial ROVs collect millions of observations of our oceans each year, fueling scientific discoveries. Herein, we assembled a group …

Therapeutic Alliance In Dietetic Practice For Weight Loss: Insights From Health Coaching, Annaliese Nagy, Anne T. Mcmahon, Linda C. Tapsell, Frank P. Deane, Danielle Arenson

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

Aim: The psychological construct of 'therapeutic alliance' can be used to better understand the effectiveness of consultations, particularly goal setting for weight management. We analysed audio-recorded health coaching sessions during a weight loss trial to explore relationships between therapeutic alliance and various contextual factors. Methods: Audio recordings of 50 health coaching sessions were analysed. After assessing fidelity to the protocol, therapeutic alliance was measured using an adapted Working Alliance Inventory Observer-rated Short Version (WAI-O-S), and examined by (i) identifying relationships between contextual factors and WAI-O-S scores (Spearman's coefficients); (ii) testing the impact of preparatory exercises and body mass index on …

High-Sensitivity Troponin T And C-Reactive Protein Have Different Prognostic Values In Hemo- And Peritoneal Dialysis Populations: A Cohort Study, Titi Chen, Hicham Ibrahim Cheikh Hassan, Pierre Qian, Monica Vu, Angela Makris

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

Background--Dialysis patients have an exceedingly high mortality rate. Biomarkers may be useful tools in risk stratification of this population. We evaluated the prognostic value of high-sensitivity cardiac troponin T (hs-cTnT) and CRP (C-reactive protein) in predicting adverse outcomes in stable hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. Variability in hs-cTnT was also examined. Methods and Results--A retrospective cohort study included 574 dialysis patients (hemodialysis 347, PD 227). Outcomes examined included mortality and major adverse cardiovascular events, with median follow-up of 3.5 years. hs-cTnT was an independent predictor of both outcomes in hemodialysis and PD patients. Increased risk only became significant when …

Identification of ST elevation on the electrocardiogram (ECG) is the cornerstone of diagnosis of ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). While lesion localisation can usually be achieved by regional ST-elevation patterns on ECG, clinicians often neglect changes in the ST segment of lead aVR, possibly contributing to delayed recognition and poorer outcomes for these patients. This study compared the 'door-to-balloon time' and peak troponins - as a surrogate marker of infarct size - for patients presenting with STEMI with ST-segment elevation in aVR compared with those patients without elevation in aVR. A total of 179 patients, including 17 patients presenting with ST-elevation …

The Dynamic Topography Of Eastern China Since The Latest Jurassic Period, Xianzhi Cao, Nicolas Flament, R. Dietmar Muller, Sanzhong Li Jan 2018

The Dynamic Topography Of Eastern China Since The Latest Jurassic Period, Xianzhi Cao, Nicolas Flament, R. Dietmar Muller, Sanzhong Li

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

Some changes in the topography of eastern China since Late Jurassic times cannot be well explained by lithospheric deformation. Here we analyze global mantle flow models to investigate how mantle‐driven long‐wavelength topography may have contributed to shaping the surface topography of eastern China. Paleodrainage directions suggest that a southward tilted topography once existed in eastern North China in the latest Jurassic Period, which is different from that at present day (southeastward tilting). Our model dynamic topography reveals a southward tilting topography between 160 and 150 Ma, followed by southeastward tilting and rapid subsidence, which is compatible with paleodrainage directions and …

Global Tectonic Reconstructions With Continuously Deforming And Evolving Rigid Plates, Michael Gurnis, Ting Yang, John Cannon, Mark Turner, Simon E. Williams, Nicolas Flament, R. Dietmar Muller

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

Traditional plate reconstruction methodologies do not allow for plate deformation to be considered. Here we present software to construct and visualize global tectonic reconstructions with deforming plates within the context of rigid plates. Both deforming and rigid plates are defined by continuously evolving polygons. The deforming regions are tessellated with triangular meshes such that either strain rate or cumulative strain can be followed. The finite strain history, crustal thickness and stretching factor of points within the deformation zones are tracked as Lagrangian points. Integrating these tools within the interactive platform GPlates enables specialized users to build and refine deforming plate …

Over 60 years ago, stone tools and remains of megafauna were discovered on the Southeast Asian islands of Flores, Sulawesi and Luzon, and a Middle Pleistocene colonization by Homo erectus was initially proposed to have occurred on these islands. However, until the discovery of Homo floresiensis in 2003, claims of the presence of archaic hominins on Wallacean islands were hypothetical owing to the absence of in situ fossils and/or stone artefacts that were excavated from well-documented stratigraphic contexts, or because secure numerical dating methods of these sites were lacking. As a consequence, these claims were generally treated with scepticism. Here …

Interglacial-Glacial Climatic Signatures Preserved In A Regressive Coastal Barrier, Southeastern Australia, Thomas S. Oliver, David Kennedy, Toru Dr Toru Tamura, Colin V. Murray-Wallace, Teresa Konlechner, Paul Augustinus, Colin D. Woodroffe

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

Regressive barriers persisting in the landscape over interglacial-glacial cycles are important repositories of paleoclimatic signatures such as past sea level and regional aridity. The Gippsland region of Victoria contains a multi-barrier system formed during past interglacial-glacial cycles and the late-Holocene. An extensive series of parallel foredune ridges forming the elongate inner barrier was sampled for luminescence dating with ages indicating deposition ca.125,000-108,000 years ago coinciding with the later phase of the Last Interglacial (LIG) Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 5e and the transition to MIS 5d. Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) imaged beach-face reflectors within the LIG barrier indicate that sea level …

We thank the authors for their comments in the previous issue of Australian Archaeology. The 2012-2015 research at Madjedbebe offers a new and comprehensive look at the early occupation of Sahul and adds substantially to our knowledge of the timing of that event and the behaviour of the first people to enter the region. Establishing occupation of northern Australia by 65 ± 6 thousand years ago (ka, with the uncertainty expressed at 95.4% probability) pushes human presence in the Top End back beyond the earliest ages so far reported for other Australian sites by c. 5,000-15,000 years ,thus raising interesting …

Isoprene emissions from vegetation have a large effect on atmospheric chemistry and air quality. "Bottom-up" isoprene emission inventories used in atmospheric models are based on limited vegetation information and uncertain land cover data, leading to potentially large errors. Satellite observations of atmospheric formaldehyde (HCHO), a high-yield isoprene oxidation product, provide "top-down" information to evaluate isoprene emission inventories through inverse analyses. Past inverse analyses have however been hampered by uncertainty in the HCHO satellite data, uncertainty in the time- and NOx-dependent yield of HCHO from isoprene oxidation, and coarse resolution of the atmospheric models used for the inversion. Here we demonstrate …

An Evaluation Of The Nursing Care Of Renal Transplant Recipients: A Qualitative Study, Kylie Turner, Tania Burns, Shelley Tranter

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

Due to the complexity of their medical management, renal transplant recipients are actively encouraged to self-manage their own medication regimens, diet and lifestyle modifications after transplant. Motivation for this study arose from comments made by hospitalised renal transplant recipients regarding aspects of their clinical care that were not given high priority by the ward nurses. The aim of this study was to investigate renal transplant recipients' experience of the care they received while they were inpatients on the renal ward. In this qualitative study the stories of 12 renal transplant recipients were used to evaluate how they felt about their …

Separation and structural identification of lipids remain a major challenge for contemporary lipidomics. Regioisomeric lipids differing only in position(s) of unsaturation are often not differentiated by conventional liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry approaches leading to the incomplete, or sometimes incorrect, assignation of molecular structure. Here we describe an investigation of the gas phase separations by differential-mobility spectrometry (DMS) of a series of synthetic analogues of the recently described 1-deoxysphingosine. The dependence of the DMS behavior on the position of the carbon-carbon double bond within the ionized lipid is systematically explored and compared to trends from complementary investigations, including collision cross-sections measured by …

This paper presents a reassessment of the archaeological record at Leang Burung 2, a key early human occupation site in the Late Pleistocene of Southeast Asia. Excavated originally by Ian Glover in 1975, this limestone rock-shelter in the Maros karsts of Sulawesi, Indonesia, has long held significance in our understanding of early human dispersals into 'Wallacea', the vast zone of oceanic islands between continental Asia and Australia. We present new stratigraphic information and dating evidence from Leang Burung 2 collected during the course of our excavations at this site in 2007 and 2011-13. Our findings suggest that the classic Late …

Rain Drives Foraging Decisions Of An Urban Exploiter, Matthew Chard, Kris French, John Martin, Richard E. Major

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

Foraging decisions tend to drive individuals toward maximising energetic gains within a patchy environment. This study aims to determine the extent to which rainfall, and associated changes in food availability, can explain foraging decisions within a patchy urbanised landscape, using the Australian white ibis as a model species. Ibis density, food consumption rates and food abundance (both natural and anthropogenic) were recorded during dry and wet weather within urban parks in Sydney, Australia. Rainfall influenced ibis density in these urban parks. Of the four parks assessed, the site with the highest level of anthropogenic food and the lowest abundance of …

Weedy plants pose a major threat to food security, biodiversity, ecosystem services and consequently to human health and wellbeing. However, many currently used weed management approaches are increasingly unsustainable. To address this knowledge and practice gap, in June 2014, 35 weed and invasion ecologists, weed scientists, evolutionary biologists and social scientists convened a workshop to explore current and future perspectives and approaches in weed ecology and management. A horizon scanning exercise ranked a list of 124 pre-submitted questions to identify a priority list of 30 questions. These questions are discussed under seven themed headings that represent areas for renewed and …

Contrary To Common Belief, Some Forests Get More Fire-Resistant With Age, Philip J. Zylstra

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

An out-of-season bushfire raged through Sydney's southwest at the weekend, burning more than 2,400 hectares and threatening homes. As the fire season extends and heatwaves become more frequent, it's vital to preserve our natural protections. My research, recently released in the journal Austral Ecology, contradict one of the central assumptions in Australian fire management - that forest accumulate fuel over time and become increasingly flammable.

The Role Of Naloxone In The Opioid Crisis, Jody Morgan, Alison L. Jones Jan 2018

The Role Of Naloxone In The Opioid Crisis, Jody Morgan, Alison L. Jones

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

Overdose due to opioid abuse is an ever increasing problem, especially in the United States, with the last few years seeing a dramatic rise in the number of synthetic opioid-related deaths. The pure opioid antagonist naloxone has been used in a clinical setting as an antidote to opioid overdose for decades. Recent data suggest that the number of patients requiring multiple doses of naloxone is growing likely caused by the increased number of intoxications with potent synthetic opioids such as fentanyl and its derivatives. Treating clinicians in both emergency departments and pre-hospital settings should be aware that they may need …

How A Trip To Antarctica Became A Real-Life Experiment In Decision-Making, Sarah Hamylton, Rachelle Balez

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

We were part of a group of 77 women travelling by ship to an Antarctic research station when our route was blocked by icebergs. We had to make a decision. Should we detour into rough open ocean to reach the target site, or abandon plans to visit Rothera Research Station and settle instead for a few days of exploring Antarctica's calmer, protected waters? This is the story of "Rothera-gate", a leadership development experience on the largest all-female expedition to Antarctica. The 2018 expedition was the culmination of a year-long strategic leadership initiative for women scientists called Homeward Bound. Men typically …

Total Synthesis Of Natural Hyacinthacine C5, And Six Related Hyacinthacine C5 Epimers, Anthony Carroll, Kongdech Savaspun, Anthony C. Willis, Masako Hoshino, Atsushi Kato, Stephen G. Pyne

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

The total synthesis of natural (+)-hyacinthacine C5 was achieved, which allowed correction of its initially proposed structure, as well as six additional hyacinthacine C-type compounds. These compounds were readily accessible from two epimeric anti-1,2-amino alcohols. Keeping a common A-ring configuration, chemical manipulation occurred selectively on the B-ring of the hyacinthacine C-type products through methods of syn-dihydroxylation, SN2 ring-opening of a cyclic sulfate and also employing either (R)- or (R,S)-α-methylallyl amine for the Petasis borono Mannich reaction. Our small analogue library was then assessed for its glycosidase inhibitory potency against a panel of glycosidases. (-)-6-Epi …

Background: Most assessments in health professions education consist of knowledge-based examinations as well as practical and clinical examinations. Among the most challenging aspects of clinical assessments is decision making related to borderline grades assigned by examiners. Borderline grades are commonly used by examiners when they do not have sufficient information to make clear pass/fail decisions. The interpretation of these borderline grades is rarely discussed in the literature. This study reports the application of the Objective Borderline Method (version 2, henceforth: OBM2) to a high stakes Objective Structured Clinical Examination undertaken at the end of the final year of a Medicine …

The Lajishan ophiolite complex in the Qilian Orogen is one of several ophiolites situated between the Qaidam and North China blocks that record episodic closure of the Proto-Tethyan Ocean. Detailed field relations and geochemical and geochronological studies are critical to unraveling the tectonic processes responsible for an extensive period of intraoceanic subduction that produced juvenile ophiolite/island arc terranes, which were obducted onto continental margins during ocean closure. The Lajishankou ophiolite complex crops out along the northern margin of the South Qilian belt and was thrust over a Neoproterozoic-Ordovician passive margin sequence that was deposited upon the Proterozoic Central Qilian block. …

Assessing The Chronic Toxicity Of Nickel To A Tropical Marine Gastropod And Two Crustaceans, Francesca Gissi, Jenny Stauber, Monique T. Binet, Melanie Trenfield, Joost Van Dam, Dianne F. Jolley Jan 2018

Assessing The Chronic Toxicity Of Nickel To A Tropical Marine Gastropod And Two Crustaceans, Francesca Gissi, Jenny Stauber, Monique T. Binet, Melanie Trenfield, Joost Van Dam, Dianne F. Jolley

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

The mining and processing of nickel ores from tropical regions contributes 40% of the global supply. The potential impact of these activities on tropical marine ecosystems is poorly understood. Due to the lack of ecotoxicity data for tropical marine species, there is currently no available water quality guideline value for nickel that is specific to tropical species. In this study, we investigated the toxicity of nickel to three tropical marine invertebrates, the gastropod Nassarius dorsatus, the barnacle Amphibalanus amphitrite, and the copepod Acartia sinjiensis. All toxicity tests used chronic endpoints, namely larval growth, metamorphosis (transition from nauplii to cyprid larvae) …

Propyl-5-Hydroxy-3-Methyl-1-Phenyl-1h-Pyrazole-4-Carbodithioate (Hmpc): A New Bacteriostatic Agent Against Methicillin - Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus, Tatiana Johnston, Daria Van Tyne, Roy Fangxing Chen, Nicolas Fawzi, Bumsup Kwon, Michael J. Kelso, Michael Gilmore, Eleftherios Mylonakis

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

The emergence of Staphylococcus aureus strains resistant to 'last resort' antibiotics compels the development of new antimicrobials against this important human pathogen. We found that propyl 5-hydroxy-3-methyl-1-phenyl-1H-pyrazole-4-carbodithioate (HMPC) shows bacteriostatic activity against S. aureus (MIC = 4 μg/ml) and rescues Caenorhabditis elegans from S. aureus infection. Whole-genome sequencing of S. aureus mutants resistant to the compound, along with screening of a S. aureus promoter-lux reporter array, were used to explore possible mechanisms of action. All mutants resistant to HMPC acquired missense mutations at distinct codon positions in the global transcriptional regulator mgrA, followed by secondary mutations in the phosphatidylglycerol lysyltransferase …

Despite significant advances toward accurate tuning of the size and shape of colloidal nanoparticles, the precise control of the surface chemistry thereof remains a grand challenge. It is desirable to conjugate functional bio-molecules onto the selected facets of nanoparticles owing to the versatile capabilities rendered by the molecules. We report here facet-selective conjugation of DNA molecules onto upconversion nanoparticles via ligand competition reaction. Different binding strengths of phosphodiester bonds and phosphate groups on DNA and the surfactant molecules al low one to create heterogeneous bio-chemistry surface for upconversion nanoparticles. The tailored surface properties lead to the formation of distinct self-assembly …
