2012-Limited research exists examining the effect of moderately loaded conditioning activities that are employed as part of a strength-power potentiating complex (SPPC). Additionally, no studies to date have explored the effects of using a concentric-only quarter back squat protocol as part of an SPPC. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a moderately loaded (50-65% of 1RM) concentric-only quarter back squat protocol on the occurrence of potentiation effects at various time points. Twenty men who could quarter back squat a minimum of 2.4 times their body mass (3.7 ±: 0.7 kg-per body mass) participated in …

The ability to express high power outputs is considered to be one of the foundational characteristics underlying successful performance in a variety of sporting activities, including jumping, throwing, and changing direction. Numerous training interventions have been recommended to enhance the athlete's ability to express high power outputs and improve their overall sports performance capacity. This brief review examines the factors that underlie the expression of power and various methods that can be used to maximize power development.

Knee Angle-Specific Emg Normalization: The Use Of Polynomial Based Emg-Angle Relationships., Jacob Earp, Robert Newton, Prue Cormie, Anthony Blazevich

The normalization of EMG signals to those recorded during a maximal voluntary contraction provides a valid construct for comparisons of relative muscle activity. However, the length dependence of muscle activation and purported, substantial, muscle translocation and changes in muscle architecture during dynamic movements presents a need for joint angle-dependent normalization processes. The purposes of the present study were to: (1) quantify variations in muscle activity across a large ROM, (2) determine the accuracy with which fitted EMG-joint angle curves accurately characterized these variations, and (3) compare peak (EMG-P) and average (EMG-A) EMG amplitudes obtained during a countermovement leg extension when …
Effects Of Medicare Payment Reform: Evidence From The Home Health Interim And Prospective Payment Systems, Peter Huckfeldt, Neeraj Sood, Jose Escarce, David Grabowski, Joseph Newhouse
Effects Of Medicare Payment Reform: Evidence From The Home Health Interim And Prospective Payment Systems, Peter Huckfeldt, Neeraj Sood, Jose Escarce, David Grabowski, Joseph Newhouse
Peter J. Huckfeldt
Medicare continues to implement payment reforms that shift reimbursement from fee-for-service towards episode-based payment, affecting average and marginal reimbursement. We contrast the effects of two reforms for home health agencies. The Home Health Interim Payment System in 1997 lowered both types of reimbursement; our conceptual model predicts a decline in the likelihood of use and costs, both of which we find. The Home Health Prospective Payment System in 2000 raised average but lowered marginal reimbursement with theoretically ambiguous effects; we find a modest increase in use and costs. We find little substantive effect of either policy on readmissions or mortality.

Jet Lag: A Neglected Problem Of Modern Diplomacy?, Dan Caldwell, William Hocking
Dan Caldwell
The observations and anecdotes of diplomats and policy-makers in memoirs and our interviews clearly document their experience with jet lag and raise important questions: what are the physical and mental effects of jet lag; what impact does jet lag have on leaders and diplomatic negotiations; and finally, what can be done to ameliorate these effects? This article addresses these central questions.

A recent Australian study found one in five consultations to paediatricians was for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, with an average diagnostic consultation time of 48 minutes. That doesn’t seem like enough time to comply with the National Health and Medical Research Council’s new Clinical Practice Points on the Diagnosis, Assessment and Management of ADHD in Children and Adolescents.

The childcare environment represents an appropriate avenue to support physical activity among preschoolers. The aim of this study was two-fold: (1) to measure the physical activity levels of a sample of preschoolers during childcare hours; and (2) to assess which attributes (e.g., space, equipment, policies) within centre-based childcare environments influenced physical activity. Thirty-one preschoolers from 5 childcare centres across London, Canada participated. Actical accelerometers were worn by participants for one day during childcare hours to assess activity levels using a 15 second epoch length. The Environment and Policy Assessment and Observation instrument was used to conduct a full-day evaluation of …

Providing library and reference services within a biomedical research community presents special challenges for librarians, especially those in historically lower-funded states. These challenges can include understanding needs, defining and communicating the library’s role, building relationships, and developing and maintaining general and subject specific knowledge. This article describes a biomedical research network and the work of health sciences librarians at the lead intensive research institution with librarians from primarily undergraduate institutions and tribal colleges. Applying the concept of a community of practice to a collaborative effort suggests how librarians can work together to provide effective reference services to researchers in biomedicine.

Postpartum women often suffer clinically significant depressive symptoms, a problem addressed by nurse-delivered screening programs. In the past, success of these identification programs was measured in terms of screening rates; however, merely evaluating the screening rate does little to inform howto implement depression screening in clinical practice. This article describes the experiences of nurses in implementing depression screening on a maternity unit. We evaluate the practice qualitatively, by asking nurses to describe their screening strategies and their views about implementation, as well as quantitatively by assessing their screening rates and the number of women identified. Utilizing a framework of program …
Effects Of Polychlorinated Biphenyl (Pcb) On Response Perseveration And Ultrasonic Vocalization Emission In Rat During Development, Howard Cromwell
Effects Of Polychlorinated Biphenyl (Pcb) On Response Perseveration And Ultrasonic Vocalization Emission In Rat During Development, Howard Cromwell

The 3 major symptoms of autistic spectrum disorders include 1) social behavioral alterations, 2) problems in communication and 3) higher-order motoric deficits of perseveration and stereotyped movements. Previous work has shown that early developmental exposure to polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) alters rat pup social motivation and juvenile rat social recognition/investigation. The present work extends this previous research by examining how perinatal PCB exposure alters motoric functions and communication abilities at different stages of development. Action perseveration was examined using performance measures from a T-maze environment. Communication abilities were evaluated by monitoring ultrasound emission in rat pups during a brief isolation from …
