Land Capability And Land Use In The Leeuwin-Naturaliste Region, Peter John Tille, Neil Lantzke Jan 1989

Land Capability And Land Use In The Leeuwin-Naturaliste Region, Peter John Tille, Neil Lantzke

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

The Leeuwin-Naturaliste region is one of Western Australia's most beautiful areas. Located in the far south-west corner of the State, it is a popular scenis and tourist spot, as well as supporting grazing, horticultureal and viticultural enterprises.

Outside of perth the region is the most popular tourist destination in the state. It is also responsible for about a quarter of the State's milk production, and 15 percent of the state's potato production and a quarter of the State's wine grapes.

Many new agricultural enterprises have opened up in the past 15 years, and the population has increased by almost 40 …

New Rules, New Technologies, And The Shape Of Minnesota Farming, Steven J. Taff Jan 1989

New Rules, New Technologies, And The Shape Of Minnesota Farming, Steven J. Taff

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

The future development of Minnesota agriculture will be strongly influenced by new technologies and government policies that will alter prices for farm inputs and outputs. While some farm operations will fail under most expected price regimes, a loss of farmers will probably not have a significant impact on overall farm production. However, the new technologies and government policies could shift Minnesota farming into either a more intensive (less land, higher yield) or more extensive (more land, lower yield) mode of operation. A shift either way will have important implications for Minnesotans. Ownership and residence patterns, ground water quality, habitat and …

Global Agricultural Trade Negotiations And Their Potential Impact On Minnesota, Mark Ritchie Jan 1989

Global Agricultural Trade Negotiations And Their Potential Impact On Minnesota, Mark Ritchie

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

The two main factors determining the financial well-being of our family farmers, market prices and government payments, are primarily established by Congress through federal legislation, commonly called the Farm Bill. Although these two factors are likely to remain the main economic ingredients in Minnesota's farm economy for the foreseeable future, the political control over these issues appears to be shifting out of the hands of Congress and into the hands of our international trade negotiators. For the very first time, all price support, income subsidy, and supply management programs are on the table for alteration or elimination in this new …

Hexagenia Mayflies: Biological Monitors Of Water Quality In The Upper Mississippi River, Calvin R. Fremling Jan 1989

Hexagenia Mayflies: Biological Monitors Of Water Quality In The Upper Mississippi River, Calvin R. Fremling

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

ABSTRACT-Analysis of Hexageniamayfiy distribution patterns has proven to be a simple, inexpensive method of monitoring water quality in the Upper Mississippi River. Burrowing Hexagenia nymphs live at the mudwater interface intimately associated with organically enriched sediments that have a strong affinity for contaminants. By their presence or absence in silted habitats, they assess the synergistic effects of hypoxia, toxins, and other stresses throughout the year. Adults are large and easily collected, providing inexpensive water quality monitoring on a river so large that comprehensive chemical, physical, and biological analyses are not logistically feasible or affordable. Pollution abatement in metropolitan Minneapolis-St. Paul …

Plant-Parasitic Nematodes In Iowa, Don C. Norton Jan 1989

Plant-Parasitic Nematodes In Iowa, Don C. Norton

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Ninety-nine species of plant-parasitic nematodes are recorded from Iowa. Twenty-seven are new state records. Most samples were collected from around maize or from prairies or woodlands. Similarity (Sorensen's index) of species was highest for the maize-prairie habitats (0.49), compared with maize-woodlands (0. 23), or prairie-woodland (0. 3 7) habitats. Nematode communities were most diverse in prairies with a Shannon-Weiner index (H') of 2.74, compared with 1.65 and 1.07 for woodlands and maize habitats, respectively. Evenness of species (J') was 0.41, 0.78, and 0.48 for maize, prairies, and woodlands, respectively.

Historical Biogeography: Geography As Evolution, Evolution As Geography, Charles H. Smith Jan 1989

Historical Biogeography: Geography As Evolution, Evolution As Geography, Charles H. Smith

DLPS Faculty Publications

Despite a number of advances in recent years, biogeography remains a field with a poorly developed philosophical core. As a result, its historical and ecological sides remain as isolated from one another as ever. In this essay I argue that a more unified approach to biogeographic studies will become possible only when workers realise that it is necessary to reject absolute space, "geography as handmaiden" approaches to distribution problems in favour of structuralist models compatible with both probabilistic spatial interaction and deterministic phylogenetic kinds of thinking. Pros and cons of regionalist, vicariance, and panbiogeographic approaches are weighed in this regard; …

Acceptance Of Simulated Oral Rabies Vaccine Baits By Urban Raccoons, John Hadidian, Suzanne R. Jenkins, David H. Johnston, Peter J. Savarie, Victor F. Nettles, David M. Manski, George M. Baer Jan 1989

Acceptance Of Simulated Oral Rabies Vaccine Baits By Urban Raccoons, John Hadidian, Suzanne R. Jenkins, David H. Johnston, Peter J. Savarie, Victor F. Nettles, David M. Manski, George M. Baer

Veterinary Science and Medicine Collection

In summer 1986, a study was conducted to evaluate raccoon (Procyon lotor) acceptance of oral baits that could be used for rabies vaccination, One thousand wax-coated sponge bait cubes were filled with 5 mg of a seromarker (iophenoxic acid), placed in polyethylene bags, and hand-distributed in an 80 ha area within an urban National Park in Washington, D.C. (USA), After 3 wk, target and nontarget animals were trapped and blood samples collected to evaluate bait uptake. Thirty-three of 52 (63%) raccoons had elevated blood iodine levels indicating they had eaten at least one bait, 13 (25%) were negative, and six …

Conspecific Recognition In The Chimpanzee (Pan Troglodytes): Cardiac Responses To Significant Others, Sarah T. Boysen, Gary G. Berntson Jan 1989

Conspecific Recognition In The Chimpanzee (Pan Troglodytes): Cardiac Responses To Significant Others, Sarah T. Boysen, Gary G. Berntson

Sentience Collection

The ability of a chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) to recognize photographs of conspecifics was evaluated with heart-rate measures. Heart rate was recorded before, during, and after viewing photographs of an aggressive chimpanzee, a friendly companion animal, and an unfamiliar chimpanzee. The subject displayed a differential pattern of heart-rate response to the stimulus animals, without prior experience with the photographs. Responses to the aggressive animal were acceleratory, which suggests a defensive response. Respiratory sinus arrhythmia suggested that this response was associated with sympathetic activation. In contrast, responses to the familiar animal were minimal, whereas cardiac deceleration was observed in response to the …

Estimates Of Genetic Variability In F2 Maize Populations, Geng-Chen Han, A. R. Hallauer Jan 1989

Estimates Of Genetic Variability In F2 Maize Populations, Geng-Chen Han, A. R. Hallauer

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Maize (Zea mays L.) breeders emphasize selection within F2 populations derived from crosses of inbred lines: Studies of the inheritance of quantitative traits in maize have been conducted primarily for generically broad-based populations. Objectives of our study were to estimate the generic variability in F2 populations developed from crosses of related and unrelated lines and to determine the effects of five generations of random intermating of plants within F2 populations on the estimates of genetic variability. Estimates of additive genetic variability were greater in the unrelated line crosses, but the estimates were not significantly different before and …

Semiquantitative Measurement Of Fission Produced Gamma Ray Radioactivity In Soils At Dubuque, Iowa, James A. Dockal, James A. Dockal Sr. Jan 1989

Semiquantitative Measurement Of Fission Produced Gamma Ray Radioactivity In Soils At Dubuque, Iowa, James A. Dockal, James A. Dockal Sr.

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Residual fission-product radionuclide contamination (fallout) in soils at Dubuque, Iowa was evaluated with an Exploration geometrics gamma ray scintillometer in 1985 and after the Chernobyl accident in 1986. Anomalous amounts of gamma ray radiation were found near where downspouts discharged storm runoff from the roof of a dwelling. The 1985 residual cesium-13 7 activity in the soils of the area was found to be 0.2 pCi/gram with an areal contamination of 16 ± nCi/m2. Activities associated with the soils near the discharge points of the downspouts ranged as high as 8 pCi/gram. This contamination seems to have occurred prior to …

Cytoplasmic Effect On Groat Protein Content In Lnterspecific Matings Of Avena Sativa L. And A. Sterilis L., A. Rezai, K. J. Frey Jan 1989

Cytoplasmic Effect On Groat Protein Content In Lnterspecific Matings Of Avena Sativa L. And A. Sterilis L., A. Rezai, K. J. Frey

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Thirty sets of reciprocal isopopulations, each with 20 Fi-derived oat lines from the BC0, BC1, and BC2 of all possible matings among five Awia slerilis L. accessions and two A. saliva cultivars, were evaluated in a replicated field trial to determine whether groat protein content was influenced by cytoplasmic inheritance and to study associations between protein content and agronomic traits. A. slerili cytoplasm had no direct effect on groat protein content, but significant interactions between the cytoplasms and nuclear genes from A. saliva and A. s1erilis were detected. Thus, the potential may exist for improving …

Desert Explorations - A Videodisc Exhibit Designed For Flexibility, Judy Diamond, Alan B. Bond, Atsusi Hirumi

Alan Bond Publications

Using an interactive exhibit does not provide the same experience for everyone. How visitors understand an exhibit, what associations it evokes, and even how it is physically utilized may differ widely. This article describes an exhibit that was designed to let visitors tailor their explorations to their own interests and motivation. The exhibit, called Desert Explorations, gives visitors choices of what to see and how to learn about what they see. This exhibit also is an example of a way of developing interactive videodisc exhibits that is relatively inexpensive yet may be tailored to a particular topic or hall. This …

The South Texas area, Region 3 of the Southwestern Division, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, is synthesized from archeological and bioarcheological perspectives. Three distinct geographic units within Region 3 are treated in detail: Central Texas Plateau Prairie, South Texas Plains, and Lower Pecos Canyonlands. More than 11,000 years of human adaptation are chronicled for this area, stretching from the Gulf of Mexico to the Rio Grande along the border with northeastern Mexico. Particular attention is devoted to a consideration of the region's prehistoric record; significant problems and data gaps are outlined. For the first time, a compilation has been done …

Rock Lobster Industry Advisory Committee Report To The Minister For Fisheries., Rock Lobster Industry Advisory Committee Jan 1989

Rock Lobster Industry Advisory Committee Report To The Minister For Fisheries., Rock Lobster Industry Advisory Committee

Fisheries Management Papers

The total catch of about 12.1 million kilograms for the 1987/88 season, based on processor returns, was an increase of 44% on the 1986/87 season. This very high catch, the third highest on record, resulted from an above average perulus settlement in 1983/84 and a "flow-on" of fast growing animals stemming from the expected high recruitment in 1988/990 caught as "reds" in 1987/88.

The Committee has identified five major elements related to the state of the rock lobster fishery upon which management advice is considered.

a) The undersize fraction of the population.

b) The "whites" which provide a significant proportion …
