Advances In Biomolecule Analysis: Ftms Of Macromolecules, Curtiss D. Hanson, Ira M. Simet, Suzanne R. Smith

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

The development of Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (FT-ICR) as an analytical technique has opened new avenues to the analysis of high molecular weight biomolecules. Because mass analysis is based on a detection of a frequency, it is possible to obtain high resolution mass measurements without sacrificing sensitivity. The unique ability to analyze high mass ions is based in the design of a passive ExB ion trap. Although in the past, field inhomogeneities have limited this technique, recent developments in both trap designs and excitation techniques have resulted in major improvements in both sensitivity and resolution.

On Transactional Workflows, Amit P. Sheth, Marek Rusinkiewicz

Kno.e.sis Publications

The basic transaction model has evolved over time to incorporate more complex transactions structures and to take the advantage of semantics of higher-level operations that cannot be seen at the level of page reads and writes. Well known examples of such extended transaction models include nested and multi-level transactions. A number of relaxed transaction models have been defined in the last several years that permit a controlled relaxation of the transaction isolation and atomicity to better match the requirements of various database applications. Correctness criteria other than global serializability have also been proposed. Several examples of extended/relaxed transaction models are …

Effect Of Unilateral Temporal-Lobe Excision On Perception And Imagery Of Songs, Robert J. Zatorre, Andrea R. Halpern Jan 1993

Effect Of Unilateral Temporal-Lobe Excision On Perception And Imagery Of Songs, Robert J. Zatorre, Andrea R. Halpern

Faculty Journal Articles

Auditory imagery for songs was studied in two groups of patients with left or right temporal-lobe excision for control of epilepsy, and a group of matched normal control subjects. Two tasks were used. In the perceptual task, subjects saw the text of a familiar song and simultaneously heard it sung. On each trial they judged if the second of two capitalized lyrics was higher or lower in pitch than the first. The imagery task was identical in all respects except that no song was presented, so that subjects had to generate an auditory image of the song. The results indicated …

Unhatched Eggs In Nests Of Red-Cockaded Woodpeckers, Warren G. Montague, Claudia F. Bailey, Joseph C. Neal, Douglas A. James

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

During 1991 and 1992, nests of Red-cockaded Woodpeckers (Picoides borealis) were monitored in the Ouachita National Forest in Scott and Polk counties of west-central Arkansas. Nests in three additional woodpecker areas in Arkansas and Oklahoma were also monitored in 1992. Of 92 eggs laid in 27 nesting attempts in the Ouachita National Forest, 18 (19%) failed to hatch. When viewed in the cavities, six unhatched eggs were noticeably below average in size for the species and eight were average size. Seven unhatched eggs were removed in 1992 from seven nests in Arkansas and Oklahoma; three eggs showed some embryological development …

Abduction In Annotated Logic Programming, Krishnaprasad Thirunarayan

Kno.e.sis Publications

The author investigates techniques to make the logic programming paradigm more expressive for knowledge representation, while simultaneously retaining the computational advantages of efficiency and simplicity. He extends the annotated language of K. Thirunarayan and K. Kifer (1989) in various directions to obtain an enriched representation language. In particular, rule bodies are permitted to be a conjunction of literals, and the rules to be recursive. A class of annotated logic programs called the stratified programs is identified which can be given a unique supported minimal Herbrand model as their meaning. Abductive reasoning is integrated into this annotated logic framework. The notion …

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

These four flower books represent a blossoming of attractive popular books describing prairie plants. Each of these four books has a slightly different goal. In terms of area covered, Farrar focuses on Nebraska, Vance, Jowsey and Mclean consider plants of the northern Great Plains, Freeman and Schofield aim at roadside wildflowers of the southern Plains, and Runkel and Roosa on wildflowers of the northern tallgrass prairie. The types of plants included vary also. Farrar includes both common and rare Nebraska wildflowers but no shrubs or trees, Vance et al. include common native wildflowers, visible introduced species, and some woody plants. …

A Study Of Kentucky’S Agricultural Performance Using Shift-Share Analysts, David Neal Cundiff Aug 1992

A Study Of Kentucky’S Agricultural Performance Using Shift-Share Analysts, David Neal Cundiff

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

In this paper the theory that Kentucky has a comparative advantage in agricultural employment, when compared to the United States, is examined. In order to test this hypothesis, a dynamic shift-share analysis was conducted using the thirteen major economic sector of Kentucky over the period 1970 to 1989. The resulting regional shift components, or competitive components, give support to the theory that a comparative advantage for Kentucky in agriculture does exist. Annual regional shift components, as well as their dynamic counterpart, possess predominately positive values, indicating outperformance by Kentucky’s agricultural sector when compared to the United States economy as a …

Temporal And Spatial Dietary Variability In The Prehistoric Lower And Middle Osmore Drainage: The Carbon And Nitrogen Isotope Evidence, Karin L. Sandness Aug 1992

Temporal And Spatial Dietary Variability In The Prehistoric Lower And Middle Osmore Drainage: The Carbon And Nitrogen Isotope Evidence, Karin L. Sandness

Department of Anthropology: Theses and Student Research

Skeletal material from six sites representing human occupation in the Osmore drainage of southern Peru, circa A.D. 50 to 1400, was analyzed for carbon and nitrogen isotopes. The δ13C and δ15N values observed in the study indicate-spatial and temporal variability in diet. Specimens from the lower valley are, in general, more positive in both carbon and nitrogen than those of the middle valley, with the most positive values being present in specimens from the coastal Chiribaya site, San Geronimo. The data suggest, however, that all populations in the drainage experienced shifts in diet through time. Samples …

Using Flexible Transactions To Support Multisystem Telecommunication Applications, Mansoor Ansari, Linda Ness, Marek Rusinkiewicz, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

Service order provisioning is an important telecommunication application that automates the process of providing telephone services in response to the customer requests. It is an example of a multi-system application that requires access to multiple, independently developed application systems and their databases. In this paper, we describe the design and implementation of a prototype system1 that supports the execution of the Flexible Transactions and its use to develop the service order provisioning application. We argue that such approach may be used to support the development of multi-system, flow-through processing applications in a systematic and organized manner. Its advantages include fast …
