A Winter/Spring Study Of Salamanders In A Disturbed, Fragmented Habitat Surrounded By Farm Land, James C. Ball Jan 2000

A Winter/Spring Study Of Salamanders In A Disturbed, Fragmented Habitat Surrounded By Farm Land, James C. Ball

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

The continued development of fragmented habitats contributes to the decline of amphibians species, and there needs to be a method for evaluating the potential of these habitats to sustain amphibian populations. The effect of fragmented and disturbed habitats among salamander species is difficult to assess because these caudates are difficult to find and enumerate. One approach for estimating the total population of salamanders is to sample them when they migrate to their winter/spring breeding ponds. One fragmented habitat in Southern Michigan was sampled for breeding salamanders during the winter/spring of 1997. Four species of salamanders were detected at this site; …

Amphibians And Reptiles Captured In Drift Fences In Northwest Wisconsin Pine Barrens, James O. Evrard, Steven R. Hoffman

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Drift fence surveys were initiated by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR) in the Crex Meadows Wildlife Area (CMWA) in 1993. Systematic drift fence trapping of amphibians and reptiles in the northwest pine barrens was conducted in a 1996- 97 cooperative effort by the WDNR, the U.S. Forest Service (USFS), and the Great Lakes Indian Fish and Wildlife Commission (GLIFWC). Drift fences were operated in four managed barrens properties, the CMWA, Namekagon Barrens Wildlife Area (NBWA), the Douglas County Wildlife Area (DCWA), and the Moquah Barrens Wildlife Area (MBWA). Eighteen amphibian and reptile species (four salamanders, eight anurans, one …

Frog And Toad Population Monitoring In Michigan, Lori G. Sargent Jan 2000

Frog And Toad Population Monitoring In Michigan, Lori G. Sargent

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

A volunteer-based monitoring project for frog and toad populations in Michigan was initiated in 1996. The survey protocols developed by the North American Amphibian Monitoring Program (NAAMP) were used and modified to suit the needs of the Michigan project and because of the highly variable Michigan spring weather. The modifications include route establishment, recommended dates during which surveys are conducted, and a more specific definition of population indices. Development of the project included training workshops for volunteers.

Differences Among The Spatial Distribution Of Sympatric Amphibians, Robert Brodman Jan 2000

Differences Among The Spatial Distribution Of Sympatric Amphibians, Robert Brodman

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

To assess amphibian declines, the factors that cause natural fluctuations in population size must be considered (Pechmann et al. 1991). Interspecific competition, predation and pond drying are known to influence patterns of distribution and composition of larval amphibian assemblages (Morin 1983, Brodman 1996, Skelly 1996). While a few studies have quantified amphibian patterns across a large number of ponds, most studies on breeding pond distributions have typically focused on pond characteristics associated with pairs of coexisting species (Thompson and Gates 1982, Skelly 1996). Little has been examined about the differences among the spatial distributions of all potentially interacting amphibian populations …

8 | Ḥorbat Rosh Zayit: An Iron Age Storage Fort And Village, Zvi Gal, Yardenna Alexandre

IAA Reports—Monograph Series of the Israel Antiquities Authority

The excavations at Ḥorbat Rosh Zayit were conducted following the survey of the Lower Galilee, as part of the Lower Galilee regional project, by Zvi Gal. The site’s full significance was only revealed in the excavations, which have contributed much data that enable the presentation of an historical-geographical synthesis. The rural Iron Age village of Stratum III was abandoned and a fort was established in Strat um II, at the highest spot on the hill overlooking the ‘Akko Plain. The rich assemblages of finds, including grinding stones and iron agricultural tools, as well as hundreds of storage jars in the …

9 | Monastic Settlements In South Sinai In The Byzantine Period: The Archaeological Remains, Uzi Dahari

IAA Reports—Monograph Series of the Israel Antiquities Authority

The early Byzantine period, especially the fourth–seventh centuries CE, saw the prosperity of a Christian monastic movement in South Sinai. This community was centered around Jebel Musa, which Christian tradition identified with Mt. Sinai. This study’s main aims are to present the relevant archaeological material, based on fieldwork carried out in the late 1970s, to publish all the sites defined as monastic settlements in South Sinai, and to provide a general picture of Sinai monasticism based on the archaeological data and historical sources. The historical sources are analyzed only when they contribute to our understanding of sites; the monastic way …

Imprecise Answers In Distributed Environments: Estimation Of Information Loss For Multi-Ontology Based Query Processing, Eduardo Mena, Vipul Kashyap, Arantza Illarramendi, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

The World Wide Web is fast becoming a ubiquitous computing environment. Prevalent keyword-based search techniques are scalable, but are incapable of accessing information based on concepts. We investigate the use of concepts from multiple, real-world pre-existing, domain ontologies to describe the underlying data content and support information access at a higher level of abstraction. It is not practical to have a single domain ontology to describe the vast amounts of data on the Web. In fact, we expect multiple ontologies to be used as different world views and present an approach to "browse" ontologies as a paradigm for information access. …

Optimization Techniques For Data Intensive Decision Flows, Richard Hull, Francois Llirbat, Bharat Kumar, Gang Zhou, Guozhu Dong, Jianwen Su

Kno.e.sis Publications

For an enterprise to take advantage of the opportunities afforded by electronic commerce it must be able to make decisions about business transactions in near-real-time. In the coming era of segment-of-one marketing, these decisions will be quite intricate, so that customer treatments can be highly personalized, reflecting customer preferences, the customer's history with the enterprise, and targeted business objectives. This paper describes a paradigm called “decision flows” for specifying a form of incremental decision-making that can combine diverse business factors in near-real-time.

This paper introduces and empirically analyzes a variety of optimization strategies for decision flows that are “data-intensive”, i.e. …

Recent Progress In Psychiatric Genetics—Some Hope But No Hype, Scott F. Stoltenberg, Margit Burmeister Jan 2000

Recent Progress In Psychiatric Genetics—Some Hope But No Hype, Scott F. Stoltenberg, Margit Burmeister

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

The reputation of the field of psychiatric genetics has recently become tarnished in the view of many human geneticists. Too many linked loci were claimed and withdrawn, too many association studies published and not confirmed, and, more recently, too many new and different chromosomal regions have been implicated for the same disorder. Here, we summarize recent trends, focusing on research that moves away from traditional linkage studies. Some promising strategies include psychopharmacogenetics and consideration of endophenotypes such as neurophysiological and behavioral markers in addition to the clinical diagnosis. Utilization of rapid and automated methods for scoring genetic variants in large-scale …

Reproductive Behavior Of The Emu, Reema A. Persad, Douglas James, Nicholas B. Anthony

Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences

Members of a flock of male and female emus were observed in an ethological experiment designed to investigate trends in reproductive behavior exhibited during the North American mating season, which lasts from October to mid-March. Observations were made at dawn, noon, and dusk from December 1999 to mid-March 2000, and the only behaviors that were consistently expressed during these times were pecking, strutting, exclusive, and male and female sexual activities (defined in text). Though statistical significance was found between male strutting behavior and female sexual activity in the December observation period, no overall significance or significance at other observation periods …

Fissure Characterization Of Rice Kernels Using Video Microscopy, Jerry W. Fendley, Terry J. Siebenmorgen, Rustico C. Bautista Jan 2000

Fissure Characterization Of Rice Kernels Using Video Microscopy, Jerry W. Fendley, Terry J. Siebenmorgen, Rustico C. Bautista

Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences

Fissures are fractures of a rice kernel that can be created during the drying and tempering process. They cause tremendous postharvest losses in milling yield. Understanding why and how rice kernels fissure will lead to optimal drying and tempering operations. This information could also provide input to plant breeders for producing rice cultivars that are more resistant to fissuring. Rice kernels were dried using various air conditions in a controlled environment chamber. The kernels were viewed by video microscopy to observe the occurrence of fissures. A videocassette recorder recorded the images for a 24-hour period after the drying process. The …

Livability Of Leghorn Balut Embryos Stored Under Varying Temperatures And Storage Times, Joyce Jong, F. Dustan Clark

Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences

Baluts are fertile chicken or duck eggs that have been incubated and removed from the incubator prior to hatching for consumption. Chicken eggs are incubated for 11 to 14 days and duck eggs are incubated for 16 to 20 days. Baluts have an extremely specialized consumer market, with the majority of its consumers of Filipino decent. Current U.S. Department of Agriculture regulations for the storage of baluts prior to sale is 7.2ºC, the same as for infertile commercial table eggs. Consumer preference is to purchase live baluts for consumption. Since exposure to 7.2ºC causes embryo mortality within 8 hours of …

Method To Predict The Potential Regional Long-Term Timber Supply Using Gis And Other Publicly Available Data, Jeffery Earl, Richard A. Kluender, Robert Brewington Jan 2000

Method To Predict The Potential Regional Long-Term Timber Supply Using Gis And Other Publicly Available Data, Jeffery Earl, Richard A. Kluender, Robert Brewington

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

While the global demand for wood products is on the rise, timber production has shifted from the Pacific Northwest to the southeastern United States in recent times. The increase in harvesting makes accurate assessment of the South's wood supply essential. Anew method is proposed for looking at the potential supply of raw woody material. The test area was three southeastern Arkansas counties. A geographic information system (GIS) using ArcView software incorporates two sources of public information. First, Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) data from the USDA Forest Service were queried to find land areas and volumes by timber type, as …

Theses and Dissertations

This study was performed in the Poroma community of the Oropeza Province, in the department of Chuquisaca. The Poroma community is characterized by a high poverty level among its members due to a number of different factors. Some of the major factors include: a restricted market, small farms, an absence of support systems, and a lack of support for agricultural development. This lack of support is seen in areas such as: research, roads, electricity, technical assistance, marketing systems, organization, and institutions that support rural development. Numerous studies on the production systems of farmers have described and analyzed the agricultural components …

The Availability And The Use Of Basic Services In Relation To The Nutritional Status, Acute Diarrhetic Diseases And Acute Respiratory Infections In Children Under Five Years Of Age In Three Rural Communities Of The Imbabura Province During The 1998-1999 Period, Margarita Caicedo Ceron

Theses and Dissertations

To a large degree, the political and economic conditions of third world countries influence poverty levels, especially in rural areas. This poverty affects the availability of basic services, such as potable water, refuse elimination, housing, and sewage systems. As a consequence of these deficiencies, more diseases are transmitted through the water and environment. These diseases include acute diarrhea and acute respiratory infections in children younger than five years of age. Consequently, it is important to have available water and sewage elimination to control these diseases among children and the general population.
