Some Interpretations Of A Map On Minnesota Sawmilling, Lyda Belthuis
Some Interpretations Of A Map On Minnesota Sawmilling, Lyda Belthuis
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
Sawmilling in Minnesota started about the time of settlement and, until 1870, mainly consisted of small mills located in the southern half of the state. Mills along the Mississippi River were mainly in urban centers while the remainder were scattered and associated with the clearing of the land and the meeting of the needs of local communities. After 1870, mills become larger. Many were constructed in northern Minnesota. All used forests in the northern port of the state and reduced them so greatly that, by 1920, the mills closed and were replaced by portable sawmills.
The Black Beetle, Clee Francis Howard Jenkins
The Black Beetle, Clee Francis Howard Jenkins
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Since first reported in Western Australia 27 years ago, the black beetle has spread widely to become a well-known pest in metropolitan home lawns and public grassed areas.
THE black beetle (Heteronychus sanctae-helenae Blanchard) is a native of South Africa which seems to have first gained a footing in Australia in about 1930, for it was then recorded as a pest of maize in New South Wales. (Gurney 1934).

THERE is nothing more pleasing to the eye than a well kept lawn, be it in a home garden or covering a sporting area, and under Western Australian conditions there is no reason why a good lawn or turf cannot be developed and maintained—always provided that there is enough water and proper care and attention.

Development Of Circadian Sleep-Wakefulness Rhythm In A Healthy Boy Gauged By Circadian Quotients, Ellen Reeker, Michael Diffley
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
The circadian quotient, briefly CQ, serves to estimate the prominence of a rhythm with a period of about 24 hours. The CQ may be computed from so-called variance spectrum analysis, among other procedures ( 1) . Computational details and some applications have been discussed earlier (1 , 2). We wish to illustrate herein the use of the CQ for gauging the development of a circadian sleep-wakefulness rhythm in the senior author's first-born child, FAR, also documented in general terms, elsewhere ( 3).

Dingo Control In The Kimberley Region, J J. Freeth
Dingo Control In The Kimberley Region, J J. Freeth
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
With all the recent dramatic developments in irrigated agriculture in the Kimberley region of Western Australia, one is apt to forget the main wealth of the district still lies in its pastoral industry.
Man, in his efforts to obtain a living from the pastoral industry, has to contend with many pests which compete with pastoral activities.
Perhaps the most serious and certainly the most sagacious pest in this region is the dingo.
Growth Study Of Young Gizzard Shad, George Pahl, Gordon Willfahrt
Growth Study Of Young Gizzard Shad, George Pahl, Gordon Willfahrt
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
This investigation was part of a general study aimed at shedding light upon the role of the gizzard shad (Dorosoma cepedianum) as a forage fish of certain game fish species. Recent changes in the populations of such game fish species as the walleye ( Stizastedion vitreum), northern pike ( Esox lucius) , and largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) in the upper Mississippi River suggest that the gizzard shad population might have an important bearing on the present situation. The purpose of this investigation was to study the growth rates of the gizzard shad in the Upper Mississippi River during their first …

ALTHOUGH every housewife tries to serve fresh foods, she often has food left over from the family meal.Rather than waste this food, she will reheat it for another meal.

Preserving And Pickling, O. Evans Scott
Preserving And Pickling, O. Evans Scott
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
AT this time of the year many housewives wish that fruit trees would bear little and often throughout the year rather than a lot in a comparatively short space of time.
We preserve fruits to try to spread this short period, and to have them on hand to vary menus when fruit is out of season.
A cupboard shelf packed with bottles of colourful, neatly arranged preserved fruits is indeed a satisfying sight.
Bottling is the most popular method, with pickling being done to a smaller extent.

Meals For Cooler Seasons : A Plain Cushion, H M. Gloster
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
ALTHOUGH March, April and May go to make up the "official" autumn season, the Clerk of the Weather does not always send us typical autumn weather.
Easter has passed however, we can usually expect cooler days and can look forward to the preparation and enjoyment of foods that are richer and more substantial than our hot weather fare.
Here are some suggestions for two universal favourites— roast duck and baked ham.
