In 2020, the University of Toronto Mississauga campus library acquired the largest collection of video games in Canada from prolific collector Syd Bolton, whose vision was for it to not only be preserved but also playable and publicly accessible. Over the past three years, the collections team has been processing the collection to facilitate access onsite, and in 2024 aims to begin the next step of digitally preserving the collection. This poster examines the relationship between risk perception and expertise among staff members of CoreTrustSeal certified repositories. Findings indicate that relationships exist between level of education and professional role and survey respondent attitudes about potential sources of risk and the CoreTrustSeal checklist sections. This paper aims to investigate the Trustworthy Repositories Audit & Certification (TRAC) process by examining the communication practices and risk communication dynamics among auditors during the audit. Through an in-depth, qualitative analysis of the audit process and the interactions between auditors, this paper provides valuable insights into the importance of diverse backgrounds, effective communication, and consensus building in the assessment of TRAC checklist requirements. Furthermore, the paper highlights potential areas of improvement within the audit process, addressing concerns related to disagreements, reliance on leadership, and the comprehensiveness of risk identification and communication.

Repository Staff Perspectives On The Benefits Of Trustworthy Digital Repository Certification, Rebecca D. Frank

This paper reports on the results from a qualitative study that asks whether and how staff members from TRAC certified repositories find value in the audit and certification process. While some interviewees found certification valuable, others argued that the costs outweighed the benefits or expressed ambivalence towards certification. Findings indicate that TRAC certification offered both internal and external benefits, such as improved documentation, accountability, transparency, communication, and standards, but there were concerns about high costs, implementation problems, and lack of objective evaluation criteria.

Purpose: This article explores the tension between the concept of a Designated Community as a foundational element in Trustworthy Digital Repository certification and curators’ uncertainty about how to interpret and apply this concept in practice.

Design/methodology/approach: This research employs a qualitative research design involving in-depth semi-structured interviews with stakeholders in the Trustworthy Digital Repository Audit and Certification process.

Findings: Our findings indicate that stakeholders in the audit and certification process viewed their uncertainty about how to apply the concept of a Designated Community in the context of an audit as a source of risk for digital repositories and their collections. …

The present study investigated ‘Digital Information Management practices pertaining to personal and professional digital information by the faculties of ‘Higher Education Institutions’. The study is envisioned to discover the use of Digital Information Management (DIM) and all its multiplicity, degree of usage, form and formats, advantages, and problems encountered while practicing digital preservation and access. This qualitative study used the survey method and questionnaire technique for data accumulation. Purdue University Libraries and School of Information Studies, like many other libraries and archives, collects, preserves, and provides access to dissertations as original works of student scholarship in conjunction with degrees awarded by the University. The processes of collecting and preserving student scholarship becomes difficult as new ETD models and formats force existing workflows and platforms to adapt. This talk will identify emerging preservation and long-term access challenges associated with new forms of scholarship and will borrow from the digital preservation field to identify innovative and collaborative approaches for addressing these challenges.

This study assessed current preservation strategies of digital materials in university libraries in South East, Nigeria based on UNESCO Digital Preservation Guidelines. The study adopted a survey research method. The population was made up of 160 librarians in university libraries in South East, Nigeria. The instrument used for data collection was the questionnaire adapted from the UNESCO Digital Preservation Guidelines. Despite the ease of creation, the web is ephemeral. The fleeting nature of websites present a challenge to repositories when a record needs to be preserved. The Graduate Center Library was recently presented with this challenge with the increase of submissions of online components to dissertations. This presentation focused on the need to capture a snapshot, the limitations of current normative practices and some alternative approaches.
