Digitization Is In The Details: Using Data From Patron Research Patterns To Enhance Accessibility, April K. Anderson-Zorn
Digitization Is In The Details: Using Data From Patron Research Patterns To Enhance Accessibility, April K. Anderson-Zorn
Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library
Materials like yearbooks, catalogs, and university governance are highly requested items at a university archive. For Illinois State University, we decided to digitize these items to make them more accessible to our out-of-town alumni and researchers. Digitizing these materials was a huge accomplishment for the department and helped us achieve our goal of gaining a larger web presence with our patrons. But where do we go from here? All too often, archivists tend to think we know what our patrons want but in some cases, our digital efforts are rarely viewed online. What parameters can we follow in choosing materials …

Developing An Understanding Of Data Management Education: A Report From The Data Information Literacy Project, Jake Carlson, Lisa Johnston, Brian Westra, Mason Nichols
Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations
This paper describes the initial results from the Data Information Literacy (DIL) project designed to identify the educational needs of graduate students across a variety of science disciplines and respond with effective educational interventions to meet those needs. The DIL project consists of five teams in disparate disciplines from four academic institutions in the United States. The project teams include a data librarian, a subject-specialist librarian, and a faculty member representing a disciplinary group of students. Interviews of the students and faculty members present a detailed snapshot of graduate student needs in data management education. Following our study, educational programs …

Data Information Literacy: Multiple Paths To A Single Goal, Jake Carlson, Sarah Wright, Brian Westra, Jon Jeffryes
Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations
The Institute of Museum and Library Services funded a two-year project for five teams (each made up of two librarians, one of whom specialized in data services, and a faculty researcher) from four institutions (Purdue University, University of Oregon, University of Minnesota, and Cornell University) to examine the data information literacy needs of graduate student researchers. After identifying the needs of their audience each team developed a tailored approach to bring instruction to their respective graduate students. The involvement of a faculty researcher in each team and pre-instruction interviews of graduate students ensured that the program developed was indeed relevant …
Yes, But What Is It That You Do?, Amanda Rinehart
Yes, But What Is It That You Do?, Amanda Rinehart
Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library
Despite carefully crafted job descriptions, e-science or data librarians find that there is little consensus on position responsibilities and required competencies. Consequently, these librarians tend to customize their positions around what their clientele require. Indeed, data “Curation Service Models [are] driven by user requirements”. Therefore, it’s not just about the data – it’s about the people. Specifically, it’s about the different cultures of user groups and librarians and how to communicate effectively across these groups. The “elevator speech” for a scientist might be quite different from the one for your librarian colleague. It’s no wonder that a recent survey of …

Beyond The Low Hanging Fruit: Archving Complex Data And Data Services At University Of New Mexico, Robert Olendorf, Steve Koch
DataONE Sociocultural and Usability & Assessment Working Groups
Open data is becoming increasingly important in research. While individual researchers are slowly becoming aware of the value, funding agencies are taking the lead by requiring data be made available, and also by requiring data management plans to ensure the data is available in a useable form. Some journals also require that data be made available. However, in most cases, “available upon request” is considered sufficient. We describe a number of historical examples of data use and discovery, then describe two current test cases at the University of New Mexico. The lessons learned suggest that an instituional data services program …

Learning To Live Without A Statistical Abstract: Thinking About Future Access To Government Information, James T. Shaw
Learning To Live Without A Statistical Abstract: Thinking About Future Access To Government Information, James T. Shaw
Criss Library Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
Twenty-four years ago, in 1987, I made a presentation called “Basic Ready Reference: Documents that a Reference Librarian Cannot Live Without” at a meeting of the Iowa Library Association Government Documents Round Table. My top recommendation was the Statistical Abstract of the United States, that annual compendium of data so familiar and indispensible to American librarians everywhere. Twelve years ago, in 1999, I made a similar presentation at the NLA/NEMA Annual Conference, and again the Statistical Abstract took its place as the preeminent resource.
The title of my presentation today, “Learning to Live Without a Statistical Abstract,” signals …

The Nyu Survey Service: Promoting Value In Undergraduate Education, Samantha Guss, David M. Mcgarry, Jason B. Phillips
University Libraries Faculty and Staff Publications
New York University's Data Service Studio has recently launched the NYU Survey Service, whose ultimate aim is to support the development and administration of surveys of all types. For the web-based component, we utilize a product called Qualtrics, which allows university affiliates to develop and administer web-based surveys. This article describes the process by which we at NYU came to offer the service during a time when concerns abound about the ability of libraries to support and expand services while still meeting service imperatives such as robust data services. While many considerations went into this evaluation and the ultimate conclusion …

Determining Data Information Literacy Needs: A Study Of Students And Research Faculty, Jake R. Carlson, Michael Fosmire, Chris Miller, Megan R. Sapp Nelson
Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research
Researchers increasingly need to integrate the disposition, management and curation of their data into their current workflows. However, it is not yet clear to what extent faculty and students are sufficiently prepared to take on these responsibilities. This paper articulates the need for a data information literacy program (DIL) to prepare students to engage in such an “e-research” environment. Assessments of faculty interviews and student performance in a geoinformatics course provide complementary sources of information, which are then filtered through the perspective of ACRL’s information literacy competency standards to produce a draft set of outcomes for a data information literacy …

Data In Development: An Overview Of Microdata On Developing Countries, Kristi Anne Thompson
Data In Development: An Overview Of Microdata On Developing Countries, Kristi Anne Thompson
Leddy Library Publications
Finding quality microdata on developing countries can seem problematic as their national infrastructures may not support large-scale surveys. In fact a variety of organizations are collecting and distributing data, though the types of data and reasons for collection often differ from those in the most developed countries. Much of the data is collected by groups involved in, or interested in researching, the field of international development. This paper provides an introduction to the different groups involved with collecting data on developing countries and to the data they collect, including population, health and welfare surveys, program assessments, finance, and opinion data.

A Reference Model For Providing Statistical Consulting Services In An Academic Library Setting, Kristi Anne Thompson, Daniel M. Edelstein
A Reference Model For Providing Statistical Consulting Services In An Academic Library Setting, Kristi Anne Thompson, Daniel M. Edelstein
Leddy Library Publications
Princeton University Library, through its Data and Statistical Services (DSS) unit, goes further than many libraries in providing consulting on statistical methods as well as software support for data library users. Princeton requires all third and fourth year undergraduates to do independent original research papers and theses in their disciplines of concentration. These requirements create a clientele of students who need to conduct relatively sophisticated statistical analysis, but who may or may not possess the necessary skills required to do so. This paper describes the model we employ at Princeton DSS to help these patrons, drawing on our experience as …

This paper provides a progress report on a project that aims to understand how people think about and understand statistical data presented in tables. The focus is on people who are not statistical specialists. To this end, studies of various user populations were conducted, underlying data enrichment and explanation was investigated, and interactive user interface prototypes were developed and tested.
