Open Government, Closed Stacks: Onsite Storage Of Depository Materials, Aimée C. Quinn, Michaelyn Haslam

Storage of growing collections is an ongoing problem for libraries. Past attempts at using the industrial solution of automated storage and retrieval systems (AYRS) ended in failure. However. improvements in these mechanisms. especially computer control and the ability to interface with online library catalogs. make them a viable option for libraries. Questions remain about the appropriateness of treating intellectual material like industrial parts. In addition. access is still an issue especially in regard to government depository documents. A literature review shows that while there is a tremendous amount of research available on the design of AYRS. little is written about …

School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship
This study addressed the problem of Internet information services having to meet the increasing information demands of users in the dynamic Internet environment. The purpose of this research was to use K-12 digital reference services as a starting point to better understand the process of building and maintaining Internet information services. This study had three specific objectives: (1) to build and apply a conceptual framework based on complexity research, literature and the researcher's experience; (2) to use this conceptual framework to empirically describe how organizations, specifically K-12 digital reference services, build and maintain services in the dynamic Internet environment; and …

The Author discusses why libraries are appropriate facilities for the management and distribution of GIS maps and data. They are neutral, unbiased institutions, and are an established nationwide infrastructure. People who need access to information automatically think of libraries. It is libraries that users depend on for their data needs, and for resources that can interpret data. In addition, librarians are proficient in collection development, cataloging, access and preservation issues. All this makes for a strong case to provide GIS services in libraries.

An Integrated Web-Based Ill System For Singapore Libraries, Schubert Foo, Ee Peng Lim
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The paper proposes an integrated Web-based inter-library loan (ILL) system to replace and enhance the existing manual-based ILL system used by Singapore libraries. It describes the system requirements that must be supported in order to make it a viable and acceptable solution to all participating libraries. Subsequently, it presents the client-server Web-based system architecture, database design and Java development platform that are used to implement the system. The new system exhibits a host of advantages over the manual system including the minimising of human resource by eliminating form-filling and other forms of paper work completely, improving the access and speed …
