Wayne State University’s Digital Learning and Development Environment was a research and development project aimed at developing a prototype for a systematic approach to digital learning using image repositories. The repositories used in the project were two of the Wayne State University Library System’s (WSULS) Digital Collections: Virtual Motor City and Digital Dress. The Collections are web portals providing universal access to digitized objects of cultural history from dispersed holdings of WSULS’s institutional partners. The project integrates easy-to-use technical tools with instructional design principles and resources for digital teaching and learning. The result is a replicable web environment where faculty …

Library Scholarly Publications

At a time when universities and colleges are placing emphasis on the first-year experience, there has been an effort on the part of the libraries to address this audience with a customized approach. Involvement with academic orientation programs is one method of reaching these first year students, and as one step the Wayne State University Library System has established a presence in the university’s iStart program (http://www.istart.wayne.edu/). In the large environment of a research university with over 30,000 students, technology has also been employed as an efficient way to establish a connection between first year students and the library. Digital Curation Vignettes: Personal, Academic, And Organizational Digital Information, Joan E. Beaudoin, Maria Esteva, Andrea Japzon

School of Information Sciences Faculty Research Publications

This panel presents variations on the theme of digital curation by examining the digital information management and preservation practices of three different populations. Personal digital information management, personal collections transferred to institutional repositories, and a digital archiving case in a private organization, offer a wide view of the types of contexts in which digital material is being produced “in the wild.” Across the cases we found that digital record-keeping and preservation practices are not well understood or established, and that a vast amount of digital content created currently is at risk. Other issues, such as an individual’s perception of digital …

Discovering New Avenues Of Promotion: Collaboration With The Division Of Research, Annette M. Healy

Library Scholarly Publications

At research universities, the library plays a critical role in meeting the information needs of researchers. As libraries expand their electronic resources, researchers are less likely to visit the library and may be unaware of available services and resources. In addition, not all research team members are reached during traditional library orientation sessions. In this electronic age, finding opportunities to promote library resources to researchers is increasingly challenging.

At Wayne State University, collaboration between the University Libraries and the Division of Research has led to several new avenues for promoting library services and resources. The University Libraries have participated in …
