Job Search During Covid: A New Librarian Navigating A New Normal, Isabel Soto-Luna
Criss Library Faculty Publications
For nearly the last two years, we have faced new challenges in unprecedented ways due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Thanks to current technology, however, we have been able to get creative to keep things moving as much as possible and find new ways to do things, including searching for jobs. Like many others, I found myself having to traverse a job search process that involved doing only virtual interviews. In my case, however, I am a new librarian (class of 2018) and this was my first full job search in the profession.

While student artists can usually articulate their personal motivations in artistic production, they often do not place their work within the context of research that can add complexity, nuance, and generalized perspective until later in their careers. To help students develop this practice, a librarian and a studio art instructor created and co-taught one assignment in 2D Foundations: Color and Visual Literacy, a required two-dimensional (2D) art studio class for all art majors at the University of Nebraska Omaha. In this chapter, the authors share the infographic assignment, which takes inspiration from information-based art generated by artists such as Laurie …

At the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) Criss Library, archivists in Archives and Special Collections work with students at varied levels, from student employees to interns, and engagement through instruction. These interactions and employment opportunities manifest in various types of projects, ranging from long-term processing work to more individualized assignments based on the parameters of practicums and internships. In the past, most of this work was based on in-person experiences.
In early 2020, UNO archivists rushed to modify and create digital projects that would sustain them and their students during an unknown stretch of working from home. As the …

Discourse surrounding the pedagogy of undergraduate information literacy sessions is robust and plentiful, but graduate students in research-oriented degrees also need a strong understanding of disciplinary resources throughout the coursework stage of their programs. Library sessions guided by ACRL's Framework help to scaffold graduate students' knowledge of the current scholarly information landscape and how to navigate this landscape effectively and efficiently. In addition, these sessions establish the significance of the literature review in identifying subject epistemologies, paradigms, methodologies, and theoretical approaches. For graduate students, this provides an opportunity to conceptualize how to employ the presented material in the context of …

The Librarian’S Guide To Zines For Classroom And Community, Claire Du Laney, Monica Maher, Amy Schindler
Criss Library Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
Zines continue to benefit from a resurgent interest from their 1990s heyday, including in libraries. A zine can serve as a pedagogical tool and are a low-cost addition to collections and programming in libraries. Over the course of the last three semesters, UNO librarians have collaborated with faculty on zine creation as a creative alternative to a typical research paper project for a course. Creating zines as assignments presents students with the opportunity to demonstrate research skills, exercise creativity, express compassion and empathy, and other outcomes. These outcomes have been illustrated by the classes that have created zines and presented …

Dismantling The Knowledgeopoly: An Open Research Future, K. M. Ehrig-Page
Criss Library Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
A library plays an integral part in the community because its doors are usually open to everyone, at least in non-pandemic times. However, access to education, to research or, more broadly, to knowledge is often siloed and hidden behind subscriptions so that knowledge monopolies start to grow. In “Dismantling the Knowledgeopoly: An Open Research Future”, and in celebration of October’s Open Access Week that promotes free, immediate access to peer reviewed scholarship, we will look at ways you can broaden the scope of Open Access and move towards Open Research.
The idea for this presentation arose through working in the …

This presentation highlights ways to incorporate specific questioning prompts as a pedagogical tool, including examples of prompts in deconstructing a topic, identifying resources, platforms, and knowledge gaps, and synthesizing ideas from multiple sources. The focus of this presentation is to illustrate and develop a praxis on how to integrate these examples of question prompts in information literacy instruction sessions for both undergraduate and graduate level courses.
Using An Ala Carnegie Whitney Grant To Support Women In Stem: A Bibliography Project, Heidi Blackburn
Using An Ala Carnegie Whitney Grant To Support Women In Stem: A Bibliography Project, Heidi Blackburn
Criss Library Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
Use Google to search “Women in STEM in higher education” and see what comes up. Researching women in STEM is extremely difficult because of the onslaught of public interest pieces, news sources, scholarly articles, blog commentaries, and dissertations written on the subject. Additionally, the word “stem” has several meanings in the scientific community from “plant stem” to “stem cell.” What if you were helping a teacher trying to write a grant to expose female students to careers in IT? Or helping a parent trying to advise a student club for women interesting in coding? In recent years, the spotlight on …

Increased efforts to diversify science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education in the United States have increased the number of studies regarding the experiences of women in STEM programs in higher education. Using citation analysis and data visualization, this study aims to determine the major publishers and journals in this area. We reviewed 647 articles published between 2007 and 2018. Citations were concentrated on a small core set of journals and then scattered over other publications. Overall, just 3% percent of the publications accounted for 25% percent of the citations. The ramifications for STEM librarians and collection development are discussed.
Deaf Characters In Young Adult Literature, Kimberly Gangwish
Deaf Characters In Young Adult Literature, Kimberly Gangwish
Journal of Curriculum, Teaching, Learning and Leadership in Education
The multicultural literature movement has its roots in civil rights and the desire to give voice and representation to marginalized cultures. Literature is a societal artifact that can inform and influence the development of cultural identity. Deaf culture is a unique culture that is underrepresented in young adult literature. This underrepresentation places more importance on accurate representations of Deaf culture since young adult fiction may be the only exposure to Deaf culture that both hearing and deaf teenagers may have. Accurate representation in literature is necessary for deaf to see themselves in what they read and for hearing to better …

Information about the LGBTQIA population is difficult to collect because of the sensitive nature of the topic of sexual preference and gender identity. This paper examines our weeding project and collection development efforts to provide health care information for the LGBTQIA community at a Midwestern metropolitan university. The findings conclude that our collection was not providing sufficient, up-to-date health information for the personal and professional information needs of our patrons in the R-RZ Library of Congress range. The weeding process, strategies for working with department faculty, and the implications for an intersectional medical collection are discussed.

Criss Library Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
Historically, archives have told the stories of the dominant society. Increasingly, archives are exploring and filling some of the silences left by the exclusion of many voices. Oral history is a way of actively collecting stories which may not exist in written form. Both the University of Nebraska at Omaha’s LGBTQ+ Voices: The Queer Omaha Archives Oral History Project and the University of Nebraska at Kearney Archives and Special Collections’ Coming to the Plains: Latin@ Stories in Central Nebraska project engage members of diverse communities in telling their own stories. This session will talk about the origins of each project, …

Knowledge of the Reference and User Services Association (RUSA) Guidelines for Behavioral Performance of the Reference and Information Service Providers and an awareness of the books, databases, and other resources generally available in library reference collections are excellent pathways to train confident practitioners in reference service. Procedural knowledge of RUSA guidelines and intellectual ability are the basic skills required to answer a reference question. Yet at times, the reference interview is a labyrinthine process laden with confusion and emotion. Tacit knowledge – unwritten, unspoken knowledge based on experience, insights, and intuition – is a skill that allows librarians to navigate …

The Effect Of Elaborative Interrogation On The Synthesis Of Ideas From Multiple Sources Of Information, Omer Farooq
Criss Library Faculty Publications
The new Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education (ACRL, 2016) highlights the ability to synthesize ideas from multiple sources of information as one of the key knowledge practices. There is little generalizable empirical research based on cognitive science principles to guide information literacy instruction practice. The present study examined the effectiveness of elaborative interrogation instructional strategy on integration and transformation of ideas from multiple sources of information. 86 participants took part in the study via Amazon Mechanical Turk platform. The experiment involved reading five texts on the topic of climate change and responding to embedded elaborative interrogation prompts (treatment …
