The Idea Of The Law Review: Scholarship, Prestige, And Open Access, Michael Madison Dec 2006

The Idea Of The Law Review: Scholarship, Prestige, And Open Access, Michael Madison

IR Research

This Essay was written as part of a Symposium on open access publishing for legal scholarship, held at Lewis & Clark Law School. It makes the claim that “open access” publishing models will succeed, or not, to the extent that they account for the existing “economy of prestige” that drives law reviews and legal scholarship. What may seem like a lot of uncharitable commentary is intended instead as an expression of guarded optimism: Imaginative reuse of some existing tools of scholarly publishing (even by some marginalized members of the prestige economy – or perhaps especially by them) may facilitate the …

Library Internship: A Key To The Development Of Sustainable Professional Competence, Puttaraj Choukimath, Uma Choukimath, Muttayya M. Koganuramath

Puttaraj Choukimath

Obtaining a professional position in the field requires real world experience. Theoretical facets form the backbone, but exposure to real-life situations need not be ignored. 'Sustainable professional competencies' warrant for the continued education and training of the LIS professionals in general and the new entrants in particular. This paper discusses the prospects of the Library Internship Training and thereby advocates for its integration in the LIS curricula. It reveals that, there is much to gain from the Library Internship.

Empowering Web Experiences With Ajax And Rss Feed, Win Shih, Hongbin Liu Oct 2006

Empowering Web Experiences With Ajax And Rss Feed, Win Shih, Hongbin Liu

Win Shih

The rapid evolution of Web technologies and standards has fueled the development of a raft of highly interactive and personalizable Web applications. AJAX (Asynchronous javaScript and XML)-powered and RSS-enabled Web sites, such as Google/IG, Google Map, Start.com from Microsoft, and Flickr.com from Yahoo make Web interfaces out of normally-nonweb-eanbled functionalities as running typical applications on your local PC.

Using similar technologies, we have been exploring the possibilities to a library-based portal that allows users freely configure their customized portal with contents of their choosing. Be this content e-mail, news, weather, blogging, photos, library’s catalog, or any RSS feed from publishers, …

The Value Of Csa Deep Indexing For Researchers (Executive Summary), Carol Tenopir, Robert Sandusky, Margaret Casado Oct 2006

The Value Of Csa Deep Indexing For Researchers (Executive Summary), Carol Tenopir, Robert Sandusky, Margaret Casado

Carol Tenopir

In 2005-2006 CSA developed a new “deep indexing” method to extract tables and figures from journal articles, index each table and figure, provide a retrieval method to locate tables and figures or complete articles that contain relevant figures or tables, and link them back to the article. A prototype Tables & Figures index of approximately 300,000 objects was made available for testing on the CSA Illumina Web-based platform in April 2006. The Tables & Figure index prototype was particularly strong in its coverage of biological, environmental, and aquatic sciences.

The Economics Of Open Access Publishing, Jessica Litman Jul 2006

The Economics Of Open Access Publishing, Jessica Litman

IR Research

The conventional model of scholarly publishing uses the copyright system as a lever to induce commercial publishers and printers to disseminate the results of scholarly research. The role of copyright in the dissemination of scholarly research is in many ways curious, since neither authors nor the entities who compensate them for their authorship are motivated by the incentives supplied by the copyright system. Rather, copyright is a bribe to entice professional publishers and printers to reproduce and distribute scholarly works. As technology has spawned new methods of restricting access to works, and copyright law has enhanced copyright owners' rights to …

E-Karaoke For Gender Empowerment, Payal Arora Jul 2006

E-Karaoke For Gender Empowerment, Payal Arora

Payal Arora

A folksongs karaoke product has been created to increase usage of subtitled media to enhance literacy and technology use, particularly among girls in rural India. This entails generating and proliferating popular local folksongs with social and cultural themes of interest to girls, accompanied by the award-winning Same Language Subtitling (SLS) feature. In this paper, the prime goal is to discuss possible implications of this novel technology content on girls’ socialization, education, and activism. Based on initial findings from a pilot test of this product in schools, private and public in rural India, I propose that this product has the potential …

Incorporating Visual Literacy Into Academic Libraries, Jennifer Mayer, Cheryl Goldenstein Jun 2006

Incorporating Visual Literacy Into Academic Libraries, Jennifer Mayer, Cheryl Goldenstein

Jennifer Mayer

The brain is predominantly visual, with ninety percent of sensory input coming from visual sources (Jensen 2000). Visual arts in particular stimulate the right hemisphere of the brain, and combining visual with verbal activities helps reinforce learning. Millennials generally prefer graphics to text. At the same time, using images indiscriminately may simply serve as clutter—or even convey an inaccurate or negative message. How can librarians use visuals effectively in our web pages, tutorials, handouts, and classroom presentations? What constitutes an “image” and what are some resources for finding images? What services can librarians provide for students whose projects are becoming …

A Framework For Analysing The Microbiological Commons, Charlotte Hess, Elinor Ostrom Jun 2006

A Framework For Analysing The Microbiological Commons, Charlotte Hess, Elinor Ostrom

Charlotte Hess

In an earlier article, “Ideas, artifacts and facilities: information as a common-pool resource”, we examined the role of collective action in building robust knowledge commons and in circumventing trends of enclosure and privatisation of the intellectual public domain. Our analysis suggested that collective action and new institutional design play as large a part in shaping the collection, distribution, and preservation of scholarly information as do legal restrictions and market forces. The microbiological commons extends well beyond the boundaries of e-prints and other full-text research documents that are the focus of the open access movement. It includes the contents of scientific …

Clir Forms Advisory Committee For Scholarly Communication Report, Ann Okerson, Gordon C. Tibbitts

Gordon C. Tibbitts III

In January 2006 CLIR (the Council on Library and Information Resources) formed a committee of advisors to develop strategically directed scholarly communication and preservation agendas that would appeal to and create value for CLIR constituents and the broader communities of stakeholders whose existence is entwined with these two topics. This report represents the findings as presented by Ann Okerson (the committee leader) and the committee findings between mid-January and late March 2006, identifying possible directions and studies to be pursued in CLIR's scholarly communication programs over the next three years.

Fedora: An Architecture For Complex Objects And Their Relationships, Carl Lagoze, Sandy Payette, Edwin Shin, Chris Wilper Apr 2006

Fedora: An Architecture For Complex Objects And Their Relationships, Carl Lagoze, Sandy Payette, Edwin Shin, Chris Wilper

Edwin Shin

The Fedora architecture is an extensible framework for the storage, management, and dissemination of complex objects and the relationships among them. Fedora accommodates the aggregation of local and distributed content into digital objects and the association of services with objects. This allows an object to have several accessible representations, some of them dynamically produced. The architecture includes a generic Resource Description Framework (RDF)-based relationship model that represents relationships among objects and their components. Queries against these relationships are supported by an RDF triple store. The architecture is implemented as a web service, with all aspects of the complex object architecture …
