Digital Wayfinding: A User Study, M Ryan Hess
Digital Wayfinding: A User Study, M Ryan Hess
M Ryan Hess
The DePaul University Richardson Library conducted a study of an interactive, touch-based wayfinding screen in order to determine 1) what specific content needs users desire in digital wayfinding services and 2) are user content needs so broad, a more full-feature experience with access to all library web content would be preferred. The three-phase study included analysis of click analytics data, observations of user interactions and questionnaires targeting user experiences and expectations. The study builds on research at other libraries around point-of-need wayfinding signage and usability of digital information. Phase 1 involved capturing anonymous click analytics of user interactions, over a …

At MCLA we have sponsored undergraduate student interns who assist with marketing and outreach for the library. Our interns are responsible for the library’s Tumblr, posting weekly about databases, items from the archives, and apps of interest, the library’s Instagram account, and the library’s Facebook account. In addition, they have created videos and hosted social media contests. We will share some of the projects our interns have worked in and talk about best practices in having student run social media.

Do you ever get the feeling a service your library offers could be improved? Do you notice users struggle with the same challenges over and over? You might not need more funding to fix it, just a change in perspective. In this workshop you will acquire real skills and design a persona for your library. Personas are fictional people, but based on data and observations. Using personas will help you make user centered decisions. This workshop will walk participants through the process of creating personas they can apply to specific services their library offers.

All of us have had to work through life challenges and perhaps even suffered professional setbacks. Whether it was a poorly attended program, a new instructional method that was ineffective, or getting started on professional development requirements, sharing our experiences of failure with each other in a safe and accepting space can be cathartic and informative. See what skeletons we have hiding in our closets, and learn how showing yours the light of day might be the most inspiring connection you make for yourself, your colleagues, and your library!

Digital libraries can be deployed at many points throughout the life cycles of scientific research projects from their inception through data collection, analysis, documentation, publication, curation, preservation, and stewardship. Requirements for digital libraries to manage research data vary along many dimensions, including life cycle, scale, research domain, and types and degrees of openness. This article addresses the role of digital libraries in knowledge infrastructures for science, presenting evidence from long-term studies of four research sites. Findings are based on interviews (n=208), ethnographic fieldwork, document analysis, and historical archival research about scientific data practices, conducted over the course of more than …

Dataverse In The Universe Of Data, Christine Borgman

Data repositories are much more than "black boxes" where data go in but may never come out. Rather, they are situated in communities, with contributors, users, reusers, and repository staff who may engage actively or passively with participants. This talk will explore the roles that Dataverse plays – or could play – in individual communities.

Data, Data Everywhere — But How To Manage And Govern?, Christine Borgman
Christine L. Borgman
Universities are drowning in data, not only data produced by their researchers and students, but also data they collect about their communities. Research data are subject to sharing and retention requirements by funding agencies and journals. Data from course management systems, faculty personnel records, security cameras, and social media are being used as indicators for decision making. This talk will identify some of the challenges faced by universities in managing and governing these complex categories of data. Material is drawn from Big Data, Little Data, No Data: Scholarship in the Networked World (Borgman, 2015, MIT Press) and the UCLA Data …

China's Global Growth In Social Science Research: Uncovering Evidence From Bibliometric Analyses Of Ssci Publications (1978–2013), Weishu Liu
Weishu Liu
The phenomenon of China's rise as an emerging scientific power has been well documented, yet the development of its social science is less explored. Utilizing up-to-date Social Science Citation Index (SSCI) publication data (1978–2013), this paper probes the patterns and dynamics of China's social science research via bibliometric analyses. Our research indicates that despite the national orientation of social science research and the linguistic obstacle of publishing for an international audience, China's publications in the SSCI dataset have been rising in terms of volume, world share, and global ranking. But China is still not yet a major player in the …

There is an increasing emphasis on learning outcomes assessment in the accreditation process in higher education in general and in library education specifically. This mixed methods study investigated the practice of outcomes assessment at master’s programs in library and information studies accredited by the American Library Association in the United States and Canada. Six salient themes emerged from the survey responses of Accreditation Liaison officers and the content analysis of 12 program presentations of MLIS programs. First, outcomes assessment has taken hold at MLIS programs in which 93% of programs have adopting a common set of learning goals and outcomes, …

Three Classes On Tap: Brewing Library Instruction Through Collaboration, Ashley Dupuy, Chris Sharpe, Eli Arnold
Ashley Dupuy
Using group collaboration and team assignments, our library went through a process of trial and error to standardize our library instruction curriculum for undergraduate one-shot classes. We moved from a disorganized system to a standard curriculum based on ACRL standards with mutually-determined learning objectives and three pre-defined class types. In the process we developed an “instruction tool kit” to share information, and workshops to train all instruction librarians. In this presentation, we will walk participants through our process and experience and encourage them to explore new ways of approaching instruction programs at their home institutions. http://libguides.kennesaw.edu/toolkit
Building A Physical Library In The Digital Age, Jennifer A. W. Joe
Building A Physical Library In The Digital Age, Jennifer A. W. Joe
Jennifer Wright Joe
The digital age is changing the abilities and offerings of libraries of all types. However, there is still the notion that a physical place we call the library should exist. For most institutions that have had brick and mortar structures for decades (if not centuries), this dichotomy is fairly easy to navigate. However, what do you do when your library is only 6 years old? Drawing on her experience as a branch campus librarian for the last two years, the speaker explores the challenges as well as the rewards of growing a physical library in the digital age.

Library As Publisher: Are You Ready To Support Your Community By Assisting In Content Creation?, Teresa A. Fishel, Jacki Betsworth
Teresa A. Fishel
A growing role for all types of libraries is to enable content creation by members of their community. One type of role is by “publishing” or distributing that work so that it is available for others. Whether publishing an electronic journal or book or supporting authors for traditional publishing, what is the role libraries could or should be taking? While many academic libraries now host student and faculty journals, what about monographs? Some academic libraries are now exploring how to support faculty interested in producing OA textbooks. A recent article in American Libraries (“Wanna write a good one? Library as …
