Out Of Sight, But Not Out Of Mind: Surveying Library Use Among Students Studying Abroad, Marc Vinyard Jul 2018

Out Of Sight, But Not Out Of Mind: Surveying Library Use Among Students Studying Abroad, Marc Vinyard

Pepperdine University Libraries

Pepperdine University's six international campus libraries are not staffed by librarians. However, the library serves overseas students with small print collections, course specific LibGuides and highly trained student assistants. A goal of the LibGuides and student workers is to make students aware of library resources and services while studying abroad. Students studying overseas were surveyed to determine their use and awareness of library resources. In addition, to determine if the library could have an important role in supporting study abroad programs, students were asked if they had research assignments that required outside resources. While the results of the survey revealed …

A Pop-Up Service Point And Repurposed Study Spaces: Maintaining Market Share During A Renovation, Marc Vinyard, Mark Roosa, Sally Bryant, Melinda Raine

Pepperdine University Libraries

Payson Library, the largest library at Pepperdine, primarily serves undergraduate students. It underwent a renovation between spring 2016 and fall 2017. Payson Library was closed during this renovation, and a Library Hub was established as a temporary service point and library information and teaching center on campus. Maintaining market share led to rolling out new services such as RAPID-ILL, repurposing a graduate campus library for increased study spaces, and reliance on a strong library liaison program. Predictably, there was a sharp reduction in patron visits, but there was success in providing reference, instruction, and access to the collections.

How Research Becomes Impact: Librarians Helping Faculty Use Scholarly Metrics To Select Journals, Marc Vinyard, Jaimie Beth Colvin Apr 2018

How Research Becomes Impact: Librarians Helping Faculty Use Scholarly Metrics To Select Journals, Marc Vinyard, Jaimie Beth Colvin

Pepperdine University Libraries

Many librarians support faculty with the publishing process, which includes journal selection and evaluating the impact of their scholarly output. While large universities have the resources for entire departments devoted to bibliometrics, the authors of this article give strategies for faculty publishing support at a smaller liberal arts university. The authors created a LibGuide with publishing resources and presented the initiative to several academic divisions. Faculty were surveyed, and the results indicated that the majority of respondents were interested in assessing journal quality and viewed the library as a resource for help with the publishing process.

What’S Your Source?: The Dilemma Of Scanning Negatives Vs. Prints To Represent Images In Photography Collections, Kevin C. Miller Aug 2015

What’S Your Source?: The Dilemma Of Scanning Negatives Vs. Prints To Represent Images In Photography Collections, Kevin C. Miller

Pepperdine University Libraries

Recently, Pepperdine University Libraries initiated the digitization and curatorial arrangement of a large collection of negatives and prints donated by the widow of Hanson A. Williams, Jr., one of our alumni. Williams had been a photographer by trade and, after his death, his wife donated 13.86 linear feet of photographic images depicting his life at college and immediately afterwards in the Korean War. After processing the collection, we realized that we had a copious number of Williams’ original negatives in addition to multiple iterations (in some cases) of prints that he had made from these negatives. As we discussed a …

Developing Collecting Areas Through Digital Surrogate Donations: Are The Benefits Worth The Risks?, Kevin C. Miller

Pepperdine University Libraries

Special collections librarians at small or medium sized institutions may lack the resources required to build new collecting areas or further enrich the collecting areas mandated by their mission. As one measure to overcome this challenge at Pepperdine University, we are experimenting with an approach that we call “digital surrogate” donations. In these cases, we work with donors to create digital surrogates—typically scans of images or texts—of select physical materials with which donors are not quite ready to part. Per a modified donor agreement, the digital surrogate collections are then made available to researchers through our digital archive and open …

A Study Of Pepperdine Faculty Research Practices: Report For Faculty, Lynne Jacobsen, Kevin C. Miller

Pepperdine University Libraries

This paper, prepared for Pepperdine University faculty, provides a summary of the results drawn from a participatory design study carried out by Pepperdine University Libraries in the fall of 2014. The study sought to identify faculty research practices using in-depth interviews for the purpose of improving library services, spaces, and technologies.

Libraries Across The Sea: Using A Virtual Presence And Skilled Student Assistants To Serve Students Abroad, Kimberly Posin Chan, Jaimie Beth Colvin, Marc Vinyard, Claire Leach, Mary Ann Naumann, Paul Stenis May 2015

Libraries Across The Sea: Using A Virtual Presence And Skilled Student Assistants To Serve Students Abroad, Kimberly Posin Chan, Jaimie Beth Colvin, Marc Vinyard, Claire Leach, Mary Ann Naumann, Paul Stenis

Pepperdine University Libraries

The authors discuss methods and challenges of supporting branch academic libraries overseas that are not staffed onsite by librarians or permanent staff. The authors present their two-pronged approach of creating a virtual presence carefully customized to the needs of the students studying abroad along with specially and highly trained student workers. The new program, grounded partly in theories from education and business management, is shown to have substantially improved both library services for our study abroad students as well as library student workers’ performance.

“Everything You Need to Know about Grants: Beginning, Middle and End” was a 90-minute session presented at the Society of California Archivists Annual General Meeting in Berkeley, CA, on April 13, 2013. As a part of the archival community, many of us know that grants are an excellent way to reduce backlogs or accomplish projects we don't have the resources to tackle. However, what many of us may not know is how much work goes into successfully implementing and completing a grant. The purpose of this session was to assemble a group of individuals who have been involved in various …

From Discovery To Delivery: Successful Systems Integration, Sally Bryant, Gan Ye Jun 2014

From Discovery To Delivery: Successful Systems Integration, Sally Bryant, Gan Ye

Pepperdine University Libraries

Patrons want library collections to be unrestricted in scope. Demands for information resources are increasing while libraries are facing decreasing budgets and minimal staffing support. ILL and consortial services can help libraries expand access to collections. Patron-initiated borrowing systems are a current trend in libraries, but seamlessly integrating them is challenging. Our poster will analyze problems in patron-initiated consortial borrowing and lending services. We will introduce our new generation service, which combines more than four complex library systems and allows them to work together in real-time availability: the OPAC, a consortial borrowing system, an ILL system, an ILS, and an …

It's All Up In The Clouds, Gan Ye, Sally Bryant

Pepperdine University Libraries

Our roadmap to the cloud started with WorldCat Local as our catalog/discovery system. Next we moved to OCLC’s WorldShare Management Services (WMS), a cloud-based ILS system/platform including the License module and WorldCat Knowledge Base we use to manage our e-resources. At the same time, the cloud also moved into public services with the use of the Springshare platform for our reference, instruction, statistics and room reservation systems. Staff scheduling is also in the cloud with Whentowork. All of these cloud based technology changes have revolutionized the way librarians and staff do their routine jobs. The impact on our workflow has …
