Preserving Film Preservation In The Digital Era, Becca Bastron
Preserving Film Preservation In The Digital Era, Becca Bastron
School of Information Student Research Journal
This paper explores the current controversies surrounding film preservation in the digital era. Questions address the benefits of new technologies and the potential sacrifices to a film's authenticity and designation as a valued historical, social, and cultural artifact. Issues examined include film's frail format, archives's financial and storage limitations, the concept of "the original film," and how current digitization methods affect each of these areas. This paper addresses the recent restorations of two particular films—Fritz Lang's Metropolis (1927) and Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo (1958)—and concludes that digital technologies are not stable enough to replace traditional preservation methods, but they can greatly …

Assessment Of Library Instruction On Undergraduate Student Success In A Documents-Based Research Course: The Benefits Of Librarian, Archivist, And Faculty Collaboration, Paul Victor Jr., Justin Otto, Charles Mutschler
Collaborative Librarianship
This article discusses a successful collaboration between multiple subject specialist librarians, the University Archivist and a faculty member teaching an undergraduate course in documents-based social science research. This collaborative partnership allowed for each subject specialist to expose students to specific information literacy skills they needed to be successful in their class. The authors used pre- and postassessments to gauge student comfort level in conducting library research, as well as a rubric to assess the annotated bibliography of a student’s final research paper. The data from these assessment tools are analyzed and the results discussed. The data indicates that students benefited …

Persuasion, Promotion, Perception: Untangling Archivists' Understanding Of Advocacy And Outreach, Jeremy Brett, Jasmine Jones
Persuasion, Promotion, Perception: Untangling Archivists' Understanding Of Advocacy And Outreach, Jeremy Brett, Jasmine Jones
Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists
More and more, archivists find themselves having to be advocates for their own institutions, fellow archival institutions, and themselves. This is an especially complicated turn of events because of discrepancy among archivists as to what specifically constitutes archival advocacy. Over the past year, as a response to this, the Issues & Advocacy Roundtable of the Society of American Archivists has been conducting surveys on archival advocacy in the profession, designed to gauge the advocacy environment as it exists among today’s archivists and archival institutions. The ongoing goal of the project has been to create a dialogue about what advocacy is, …
Attitudes About And The Affects Of The Use Of Student Assistants In Special Collections And Archives., Carol Waggoner-Angleton
Attitudes About And The Affects Of The Use Of Student Assistants In Special Collections And Archives., Carol Waggoner-Angleton
Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists
The continuing backlog in collections processing could be reduced through the application of More Product Less Process (MPLP) or other approaches, but the effort is still hampered by a lack of personnel to assign to processing. This discussion addresses whether it is possible to consider student assistants a viable labor source in special collections and archives to mitigate this personnel gap. A retrospective literature review determined historical attitudes toward the use of student assistants in academic libraries and the tasks that students were capable of performing. Study participants practicing in Special Collections and Archives in academic libraries in Georgia were …

An Interview With University Archivist Orson Kingsley, Ellen Scheible
Bridgewater Review
It has been about one year since Bridgewater State hired Orson Kingsley to become the head of the university’s archives, a large and growing treasure trove of information about our institutional history and the people who have passed through our doors. In September 2012, Bridgewater Review Associate Editor Ellen Scheible visited Mr. Kingsley in his Maxwell Library office and asked him to reflect on the role of the university archivist and his experiences at Bridgewater State.

Condition Survey Of The Circulating Collection: Joseph Anderson Cook Memorial Library, University Of Southern Mississippi, Scott David Reinke
SLIS Connecting
Building on the foundation of condition surveys that span the last 30 years, the current research provides library administrators at The University of Southern Mississippi’s Joseph Anderson Cook Memorial Library with information that can be used to plan mitigation strategies, create preservation policies, and further develop the existing preservation services to ensure that the collection remains accessible for future students and scholars. This survey serves as a pilot project to determine whether additional research in this area is warranted. It also provides a statistically valid set of data that indicate the current condition of the collection and an estimate of …

Providing Enhanced Access For The Oregon State University College Catalogs : A Case Study, Susan A. Kunda, Elizabeth A. Nielsen
Journal of Western Archives
The academic catalog is a vital record for colleges and universities. Until the late 1980s, Oregon State University catalogs were published, distributed and archived solely in print format. With the advent of web and digital technologies, the Oregon State University Registrar’s Office also began placing an electronic version of the most recent catalogs online, while the Oregon State University Libraries provided access to earlier versions of the catalog through a subscription to College Source®, an online vendor for academic catalogs.
In 2006, the Registrar’s Office was looking for a home for its archive of digital files, while the escalating cost …
Ethical Considerations In Web 2.0 Archives, Antoinette E. Baker
Ethical Considerations In Web 2.0 Archives, Antoinette E. Baker
School of Information Student Research Journal
In April 2010, the Internet company Twitter announced that it had granted its entire archive of “Tweets” to the Library of Congress. These Tweets are typically generated by public users, who may or may not understand or expect that their submissions will be archived by a government agency. Archives of Web 2.0 material raise new ethical considerations for archivists, who must balance interests in preserving material with privacy interests of users who generated the content. Archivists can address these concerns by requiring corporate donors to fully disclose the nature of the archive to users and by allowing users to opt-out …
Information-Seeking Behavior Of Novelists In Archives, Cary G. Osborne
Information-Seeking Behavior Of Novelists In Archives, Cary G. Osborne
Journal of Western Archives
Archives are a frequently untapped resource for novelists. Accounts of daily life, the lives of individuals, details of specific eras, and other minutiae found in the documents and memorabilia housed in archives can be used to fill out the essential scenes and events of the stories. Such facts and personal details help fiction writers make their stories real to readers and keep misconceptions and factual errors out. This study looks at the limited literature on the subject of authors in archives and presents examples of the types of information housed in particular archives to illustrate the kinds of details that …

A reciprocal visit by Russian and Ukrainian colleagues the following year to participate in the Inaugural Conference on German-Russian Studies is also detailed. The authors, both members of the Joint Academic Board for the International Center for German-Russian Studies at Colorado State University, discuss outreach strategies and lessons learned regarding a wide-ranging collaborative international project with information …
