Got Metadata In Your Future? Lessons Learned From Describing A Unique Image Collection, Scott M. Dutkiewicz, Jessica Serrao, Charlotte Grubbs

This practical session covers how Clemson University Libraries’ metadata team describes their largest digital collection of historical images. It focuses on what the team has learned from the project, including developing workflows and strategies for describing images, creating a local heading controlled vocabulary, and leveraging expertise to streamline metadata creation. The team explains the metadata management tool CollectiveAccess, shares examples from the collection, and discusses benefits of documentation. The session concludes with continued metadata challenges.

In November 2018, Lander University’s Jackson Library replaced their rarely-used traditional suggestion box with a new feedback station installed in the printing area, including open-ended whiteboard prompts and public replies posted to all question/comment forms received. Since then, the library’s users have shared hundreds of forms and whiteboard responses. How to install and manage a feedback station, challenges encountered, and actions taken in response to user feedback are discussed.

Making a simple adjustment to how we set up our information literacy one shot sessions sparked new joy among the faculty and the librarians. Using Springshare's suite of applications we were able to tidy up the process for requesting, scheduling, and presenting our information literacy one shot sessions. This conference proceeding will provide an overview of what tools we used and how we were able to spark joy in our information literacy program.

Emotional intelligence is key to employee success, yet many libraries do not consider EI in training. 46 library staff completed the Emotify test and a survey assessing their performance. Staff in leadership roles tended to score higher and rate their EI knowledge higher. Staff with lower scores tended to assess the test as not useful. More EI training is needed for nonsupervisory staff, and library administrations should encourage EI training for all staff.

The integration of new technologies on college campuses is an imperative to enhance learning and prepare students for career success. This article describes the implementation of new technology at a technical college library. Thanks to a multi-layered grant from The Chapin Foundation HGTC Library was able to install a video wall, 10 zSpace machines, and a PolyCom system all in the same space located inside the library. Uses of this equipment in other settings as well as at HGTC are considered.

Makerspaces promote equity, diversity and creativity, and while different for each organization, can build peer-to-peer relationships and amplify learning by establishing shared, safe spaces where authentic experiences happen, allowing libraries to define the culture of their communities. This paper is a summary of a poster presentation, originally presented at the 2019 Annual Conference of the SCLA, which described a simple and effective method for outreach to faculty, encouraging them to schedule library instruction. Such a method can be used to improve communication with faculty and grow a library instruction program.

When the need for a new website aligned with the opportunity to develop an open source event management application, Richland Library (SC) dove right in. Freed from the limitations of proprietary software, the development team designed an entirely new web experience to help Richland County residents discover and attend events. Called Intercept, this application pushes event recommendations to customers based on their activity, gets direct feedback from customers, and enable staff to better plan for future programs.

Data privacy has emerged as a controversial topic in higher education. As librarians, we recognize the importance of privacy and confidentiality for allowing patrons to learn and explore without unnecessary barriers or fear of repercussions. However, there is a growing trend of data collection and analysis in libraries that impacts a patron’s right to privacy. In a presentation given at the 2019 South Carolina Library Association Annual Conference, we explored issues of click-through-consent, data invasion, and awareness of the types of data tracked. Florence County Library System created and implemented a continuing education program called TLC@FCLS. The process began in 2016 when a new position was created, Training and Outreach Coordinator. The person hired researched programs and training providers creating a program that is meeting the needs of its staff and customers.

Universal design focuses on small changes that can be made to benefit everyone. Universal design principles can be applied to both physical and virtual environments and help provide universal access to technology and information. This paper provides a case study of the design of a library computer kiosk in an academic library, using principles of universal design to create a universally accessible workstation. The paper provides an overview of features included in the workstation, images of the workstation, and includes discussion of additional considerations and lessons learned from the design experience.

Clemson University has traditionally focused on the on-campus experience and believed that every student should “get Clemson dirt on their shoes.” But the University has begun placing more emphasis on online instruction and teaching, culminating with the first E-Learning Day in the Fall of 2019. This poster highlights the efforts of a librarian focused on supporting online instruction through embedding in courses within the University’s learning management system. It offers a definition for Digitally Embedded Librarianship, best practices for getting embedded, and shares feedback from course instructors.

To elevate diverse voices and collections at Winthrop University, the Dacus Library Display Committee began collaborating with campus community partners to coordinate library displays with campus events. We found that collaborative displays had a higher rate of engagement, and encouraged additional partnerships throughout our campus community.

After realizing the limitations of Microsoft Office Suite for managing subscription renewals, the author evaluated commonly used cloud-based project management tools to help make the renewal workflows more collaborative, dynamic, and accessible. One criterion necessary for implementation- it would have to be free. This paper, derived from the author’s presentation given at the 2019 South Carolina Library Association, explores several cloud-based project management tools that were considered, how the author incorporates a cloud-based project management tool into her collection management workflows, the pros and cons of doing so, and tips for implementation.

Digital badges are micro-certifications that indicate competence in particular skills. At Columbia College, we combined coursework on information literacy skills with a Wikipedia editing project to create a digital “Research Badge” administered through the campus learning management system. In “Extinguished: Exploring Librarian Burnout”, we shared results from our study on librarian burnout. The study surveyed current and former librarians, as well as library school students. The focus of the study was to determine if there is a link between working while in library school and later experiencing burnout as a librarian. We hoped to discover the prevalence of librarian burnout, determine if burnout is more common in LIS professionals who worked while enrolled in graduate classes, and begin a conversation about the realities of our profession.

Public Libraries are often faced with the challenge of updating facilities to keep pace with customer preferences with limited funding. Based upon experience with bond funded renovations to multiple Richland Library locations from 2014-2020, this article shares strategies and case studies on how to make high impact changes while being sensitive to minimizing construction. Strategies include a customer experience design focus, reallocation of staff office space, use of color, selection of flexible furnishings, and integration of public art.

In the spring of 2019, The South Carolina State Library and Charleston County Public Library each formed an Accessibility Team to identify and begin addressing accessibility issues in their libraries. Volunteers from diverse roles and departments participate in the teams so that together they can have a deeper impact. The teams have started making improvements and have established a process to bring positive change to their organizations.
