In the 2020-2021 academic year, Clemson University, Coastal Carolina University, and the College of Charleston were the first three institutions in the state of South Carolina to implement Leganto. This implementation followed closely on the heels of a statewide migration involving 55 academic libraries to Ex Libris’ library services platform, Alma, and discovery service, Primo VE. Each institution completed their migration and went live with Alma and Primo VE in June 2020. Coastal Carolina University launched Leganto in July 2020 and Clemson University and College of Charleston each launched Leganto in August 2020. Learning During A Pandemic: The Impact Of Digital Badges On Staff Training, Jennifer Wright

During the pandemic, the Spartanburg County Public Libraries implemented a new learning management system with a digital badging component. The digital badges were enthusiastically received by staff and increased training completion rates significantly. Even without an LMS, other libraries can create badging for continuing education using a variety of online resources. Digital badging is an important motivational tool to use for continuing education, especially as training goes virtual due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Making A Place At The Table: A Guide For Small, Rural, And Suburban Libraries, Laura C. Collins

This article serves as resource for libraries in rural and suburban areas that are serving communities experiencing changes to their ethnic diversity, particularly an influx of immigrants from one central location with English as a second language (i.e. India, China, Syria, etc.). Within, resources include: research supporting the benefits of having a multilingual collection; common missteps and pitfalls in serving minority communities; examples of how to determine the community’s needs; provides recommendations for finding community partners; and shares resources from the American Library Association and other organizations to find grants, develop collections, and conduct outreach services.

This article provides a summary of recent criticisms of checklist approaches to source evaluation to build a fuller picture of the issues involved with relying on checklists and factors that have increased the complexity of evaluating sources in the misinformation age. It then looks at new source evaluation strategies and methods which can be used by teachers and librarians to better prepare students for the internet realities they now face in their academic and personal online research.

Facebook Live offers librarians the opportunity for ongoing engagement with their community, even during a pandemic. During the COVID-19 quarantine, community organizations of all types used the site to continue to connect with their community. Kimbel Library used the social media platform to hold virtual versions of annual face-to-face events and create reference education for students and faculty. While there is no replacing the dynamics of face-to-face interaction with patrons, Facebook Live offers opportunity for continued safe social contact. This article discusses how librarians on the Dacus Library Online Instruction Task Force at Winthrop University collaborated with the campus online learning office to integrate Springshare LibApps directly into the Blackboard Learning Management system through Springshare’s LTI Tools. In 2019, the University of South Carolina Libraries launched a new department called Digital Research Services to support new and evolving forms of scholarship in the digital age. As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the metadata team at Clemson University Libraries facilitated a work-from-home project, during which 14 employees across two units described a collection of over 2,400 photographs. From the standpoint of both the metadata reviewers and metadata creators, this session provided an overview of the project, including how it was managed remotely. This presentation reflects a balanced cross-unit perspective on what worked well and what could be improved.

A Team-Based Liaison Approach To Science Coverage, Jenessa Mcelfresh, Maggie Albro, Jennifer Groff

Liaison librarianship is an evolving specialty area in academic librarianship in which success is heavily dependent upon long-term relationship building between departments and librarians. In times of turnover and change the success of the liaison model is threatened due to the lack of continued staffing in liaison roles. This paper presents a case study of a team-based liaison coverage model for STEM fields during an extended period of turnover and change. Without this shared approach to liaison and functional duties, it would not be possible for only three people to provide service to over 14,000 patrons across multiple colleges.

Got Metadata In Your Future? Lessons Learned From Describing A Unique Image Collection, Scott M. Dutkiewicz, Jessica Serrao, Charlotte Grubbs

This practical session covers how Clemson University Libraries’ metadata team describes their largest digital collection of historical images. It focuses on what the team has learned from the project, including developing workflows and strategies for describing images, creating a local heading controlled vocabulary, and leveraging expertise to streamline metadata creation. The team explains the metadata management tool CollectiveAccess, shares examples from the collection, and discusses benefits of documentation. The session concludes with continued metadata challenges.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Union County Library System (UCLS) opted to solely offer virtual programming for our popular Summer Reading Program. This article focuses on the background, planning, and implementation in creating and executing a fun and innovative summer experience for our community and patrons, including a gamification twist to incentivize our participants.

We Heard You! Designing An Engaging User Feedback Station, Jean Thrift

In November 2018, Lander University’s Jackson Library replaced their rarely-used traditional suggestion box with a new feedback station installed in the printing area, including open-ended whiteboard prompts and public replies posted to all question/comment forms received. Since then, the library’s users have shared hundreds of forms and whiteboard responses. How to install and manage a feedback station, challenges encountered, and actions taken in response to user feedback are discussed.
