Asked to launch a faculty writing circle, our Center joined faculty to shape its mission and give members a “safe space,” a “source of accountability” (Nole, Hart, Soled, 2010), and writing support. We will report on milestones, resulting publications and presentations, library collaboration, and university wide writing initiatives showing the circle's evolution into a community of practice and how it has “harnessed the multiplier effects of collaborative processes...building upon informal networks within entities” (Nagy & Burch, 2009). By comparing this circle to those at other universities, we also will explore strategies and conditions that stimulate scholarly writing and benefit stakeholders. …

In today's competitive job market, many working adults are returning to graduate school with rusty information literacy and computer skills. Before You Write: Six Keys to Success was designed to re-introduce returning adult students to the basic skills they will need for success in a graduate program. These six modules are self-paced and utilize real world scenario based assessments. In this session, a librarian and an informatics professor will discuss the inception and implementation of this collaborative information literacy/informatics initiative.

Unpacking Mckenzie’S And Howard’S Antidotes To Plagiarism With Processes, Resources, And Assignments, Ludwika Goodson, Shannon Johnson

An instructional designer who has provided support to faculty and a librarian who has provided support to students will share their analysis of research findings to unpack McKenzie’s “antidotes” to plagiarism and Howard’s use of patch writing for learning. Implications of the research will include discussion of more recent findings from The Citation Project and an examination of the role of teachers, assignments, and the Wikipedia paradigm in influencing student behaviors.

At DePauw University librarians and instructional technologists, including student interns working in Student Technology Support, will be collaboratively supporting First-year Seminars in the form of resources teams. A student tutor from the Speaking and Listening Center and a peer mentor round out these teams, which provide instructors and first-year students specific contacts to assist with library research, class discussion, technology projects, etc. While an opportunity for the Library and IT to collaborate, the resource teams will also enable these areas to provide crucial support at the very initial stages of a student’s college career by helping faculty attain their teaching …

As branch librarians, we constantly look for ways to increase student and faculty awareness of the resources and services our branch libraries offer, because most students turn to the main library for their information needs. We created seven promotional videos in summer 2007 advertising branch libraries at DePauw University. Designed to reach students in their Web 2.0 environment, the commercials are posted on YouTube, the library website, individual librarian’s Facebook profiles and play on the campus cable station. This session will focus on the conception and production process, the outcomes of our project, and the challenges and lessons learned.
