What do the study spaces in your library look like? Have they adapted to meet the changing work habits of students? Learn how two high school media centers and a university library adapted their student study and learning spaces. Media Specialists Lisa Gearman and Sara Swenson share their journeys to reinvent learning spaces in two different high schools. Faculty Writing Circles: Freedom To Explore And Flourish, Ludwika Goodson, Martha Coussement, Shannon Johnson

Shannon F Johnson

Asked to launch a faculty writing circle, our Center joined faculty to shape its mission and give members a “safe space,” a “source of accountability” (Nole, Hart, Soled, 2010), and writing support. We will report on milestones, resulting publications and presentations, library collaboration, and university wide writing initiatives showing the circle's evolution into a community of practice and how it has “harnessed the multiplier effects of collaborative processes...building upon informal networks within entities” (Nagy & Burch, 2009). By comparing this circle to those at other universities, we also will explore strategies and conditions that stimulate scholarly writing and benefit stakeholders. …

Why It’S Worth The Hassle: The Value Of In-Situ Studies When Designing Ubicomp., Yvonne Rogers, Kay Connelly, Lenore Tedesco, William Hazlewood, Andrew Kurtz, Robert Hall, Josh Hursey, Tammy Toscos Jul 2014

Why It’S Worth The Hassle: The Value Of In-Situ Studies When Designing Ubicomp., Yvonne Rogers, Kay Connelly, Lenore Tedesco, William Hazlewood, Andrew Kurtz, Robert Hall, Josh Hursey, Tammy Toscos

Tammy R Toscos

How should Ubicomp technologies be evaluated? While lab studies are good at sensing aspects of human behavior and revealing usability problems, they are poor at capturing context of use. In-situ studies are good at demonstrating how people appropriate technologies in their intended setting, but are expensive and difficult to conduct. Here, we show how they can be used more productively in the design process. A mobile learning device was developed to support teams of students carrying out scientific inquiry in the field. An initial in-situ study showed it was not used in the way envisioned. A contextualized analysis led to …

Using Data To Promote Healthy Behavior In Children., Tammy Toscos Jul 2014

Using Data To Promote Healthy Behavior In Children., Tammy Toscos

Tammy R Toscos

Childhood offers a number of opportunities for parents to shape the health related attitudes and behaviors of their children. The proposed research described in this paper aims to better understand the ways in which a child’s personal health data can be leveraged to educate and provide a transition to healthy adult behaviors. The target population for this project is children with Type 1 Diabetes and their parents but many of the design issues may be relevant to the management of other chronic diseases as well as general health in childhood.

In today's competitive job market, many working adults are returning to graduate school with rusty information literacy and computer skills. Before You Write: Six Keys to Success was designed to re-introduce returning adult students to the basic skills they will need for success in a graduate program. These six modules are self-paced and utilize real world scenario based assessments. In this session, a librarian and an informatics professor will discuss the inception and implementation of this collaborative information literacy/informatics initiative.

Shannon F Johnson

One hundred and thirty six faculty members at IPFW have been equipped with iPads and tasked with innovation in teaching and learning. How have our librarians learned to support these technological pioneers (and join in on the fun)? We'll tell you how we acquired iPads, gauged faculty needs, developed app-specific training modules, and built tech-based librarian-faculty partnerships. From a faculty-curated App guide to stealthy information literacy training, you'll discover the possibilities of iPad-equipped librarianship.

Indigenismo From Below? Carlos Castaneda, New Age Anthropology And Identity Politics, Ageeth Sluis Jan 2013

Indigenismo From Below? Carlos Castaneda, New Age Anthropology And Identity Politics, Ageeth Sluis

Ageeth Sluis

This paper explores the intersections between Carlos Castaneda’s work on shamanism, indigenismo, and larger changes within the field of anthropology from the 1960s to 1980s. Castaneda introduced a large readership to Mexico at a time when the Americas saw pronounced socio-political and cultural changes. Despite criticism by fellow anthropologists, Castaneda's bestselling books became instrumental in constructing new indigenous identities, a magical Mexico, and new directions in anthropology. This paper seeks to understand Castaneda within a larger historical context of the historical trajectories of indigenismo and changes in gender and race identity politics both in Mexico and the U.S. due to …

First Fleet: Another Byte Of The Apple, Sandra Wills

Sandra Wills

The paper outlines the 20 year journey of the First Fleet Database as an exemplar of educational software, from mainframe to microcomputer and now to the web. The database of 778 convicts who arrived on the First Fleet to Australia in 1788 has been an electronic educational resource since 1980. It was developed for the Tasmanian Education Department’s statewide timeshare network by the author of this paper. The data was based on the works of Cobley (1970) and Robson (1973). And in doing so it will show a little piece of Apple’s history. It explores changes in the history of …

Two Great Tastes That Taste Great Together: Librarians And Instructional Technologists On Resource Teams, Caroline L. Gilson, Donnie Sendelbach

Caroline L. Gilson

At DePauw University librarians and instructional technologists, including student interns working in Student Technology Support, will be collaboratively supporting First-year Seminars in the form of resources teams. A student tutor from the Speaking and Listening Center and a peer mentor round out these teams, which provide instructors and first-year students specific contacts to assist with library research, class discussion, technology projects, etc. While an opportunity for the Library and IT to collaborate, the resource teams will also enable these areas to provide crucial support at the very initial stages of a student’s college career by helping faculty attain their teaching …
