A laudable goal of ubiquitous computing is to enhance our day-to-day living by invisibly embedding sensors and computing platforms in our stationary and mobile surroundings. Sensors being developed and deployed within distributed computing networks include those able to see (ranging from automated detection of light to identification of specific individuals and objects), hear (detection of specific sounds to transcribing language), smell (detection of specific gases), feel (detection of specific motions, temperature, humidity, etc) and communicate. Sensors in and on our bodies will communicate through our phones, cars, offices, homes, transportation infrastructure, and with objects along our travel paths. Numerous visions …

Undergraduate Programs In Information Science: A Survey Of Requirements And Goals, Colin Koteles, Caroline Haythornthwaite
Colin Koteles
Numerous new undergraduate programs have appeared in the past few years that focus on theories and practices of information science and information technology. As the global reliance on networked, digital information continues to grow, we can expect such programs to be enduring and common features of college and university undergraduate curricula. As educators and administrators consider establishing their own information studies (IS) programs, many are asking what is an IS program, and how do your create one? We surveyed online information related to existing undergraduate IS programs in the United States and Canada. Using quantitative and qualitative data about these …
Creative Commons Licensing And Non-Creative Geographic Data, Harlan Onsrud
Creative Commons Licensing And Non-Creative Geographic Data, Harlan Onsrud
Harlan J Onsrud
Why does the scientific community need a simple method for letting each of us know that we are allowed legally to build on the work and data products of each other without asking permission? Does merely following the traditional practices of science and giving credit now make me a lawbreaker? What's the problem, how did we get here and what's the solution? Why does the solution for creative works not apply to geographic and other utilitarian data and databases? This presentation addresses these questions and approaches for arriving at solutions.

Personalized Medicine: Selected Web Resources, Nancy Stimson
Nancy F Stimson
Information about personalized medicine abounds, yet it is difficult to comprehensively search for information on this topic due to the broadness of the term “personalized medicine,” the variety of terms that are used to describe this concept, the vast amount of pertinent journal articles and Web sites, and the fast pace of developments in this field. A selected list of Web sites is provided as a starting place for information about concepts, terminology, projects, databases, tools, and stakeholders related to personalized medicine.

Milwaukee Mayors (Digital Collection), Rose Fortier

The Milwaukee Mayors digital collection is an adaptation of a volume of images and information collected by Library staff to form the Biographical Sketches of the Mayors of the City of Milwaukee. Created more than 40 years ago, it has been updated with images of recent mayors. In addition to the images and information from Biographical Sketches, other photos were selected from the Historic Portrait Collection (a part of the Historic Photo Archives) in the Humanities Department. In the case of some mayors, there were far too many photos to be digitized for this collection, so a variety was selected …

Weighted Voting Models For The Hathitrust Constitutional Convention, Julia Lovett
Weighted Voting Models For The Hathitrust Constitutional Convention, Julia Lovett
Julia Lovett
In March 2011, the HathiTrust Digital Library partner institutions will meet for a Constitutional Convention (CC). At this meeting, the partners will either develop a new governance model for HathiTrust or articulate a set of questions to frame a post‐Convention discussion of a new governance model. Questions might include: What should the governing boards be, and how should they be constituted? Which institutions should have representative power, and how many representatives should there be per institution? Should HathiTrust have a new host institution and, if so, what criteria should be used to select a new host institution? These decisions will …

The article calls for the need to reinvent libraries for the next generation of library users. It stresses the value of being able to provide customer satisfaction, building and maintaining loyalty as well as resolving customer complaints so as to compete with other libraries. It also points out the importance of branding as a marketing strategy and encourages libraries to adhere to the liaison model or subject specialist model in providing specialized service. Also suggested are steps for marketing library services.
