Consortium Building Readiness (CBR) is inevitable for university libraries that intend to provide adequate information resources and services to users. Preliminary investigations showed that efforts at CBR have not been successful in Nigeria. This may be as a result of the unpreparedness among university libraries to provide Institutional Factors–IF (Organisational Culture–OC, Organisational Policy–OP, finance, Power Supply–PS, Internet Connection–IC, ICT Literacy skills–ILS and digitisation), Legal Factors–LF (Governing Law–GL, Log-in-Option–LO, Non-disclosure of Log-in-Option–NDO, Dispute Resolution–DR, Cash Contribution–CC and dissolution) and Ethical Factors–EF (professional and business) to drive Consortium Building (CB). Little attention, however, has been paid to factors that could predict readiness …

Mentoring Is Learning, Richard Leiter Jan 2015

Mentoring Is Learning, Richard Leiter

Marvin and Virginia Schmid Law Library

One of the most rewarding things about growing old is the wisdom that comes with it. Individually, we may deny that as we grow older we automatically or necessarily become wiser. In fact most of us, if we are honest with ourselves, will deny this, but I'm convinced that this is merely humility. As we grow older, we become more aware of our foibles and the knowledge that everyone is flawed and falls short of the glory of God. This kind of self-awareness is the source of our humility: understood appropriately, it is also the source of our wisdom. Many …

The Tools Of Our Trade, Richard Leiter

Marvin and Virginia Schmid Law Library

During the past 30 years, computers and other digital tools have evolved from scientific curiosities that promised to make our lives easy and paperless and threatened to make libraries go away to ubiquitous means of communication, research, entertainment, news, and much, much more. Access to technology for librarians today is as critical as having access to leather-bound books once was for the earliest librarians. In order to communicate with peers, patrons, and colleagues and to conduct legal research and create scholarship, today we need a device that lets us “see” the communication or information. This article explores the changing role …

This necessity of authenticating legal materials has been articulated many times. However, there may actually be no need for authentication at all.

The question of authentication is a very important one to answer because law libraries have the responsibility of providing accurate versions of primary legal materials. It …

Who Gets To Be The Expert?: Legal Research Skills Certification In Legal Education, Richard Leiter

Marvin and Virginia Schmid Law Library

This article considers the question of whether there is a need for law schools to offer certification for specialization in legal research skills and discusses various approaches to legal research skills certification. The author argues that it is unnecessary to offer legal research certification as it is presupposed that a basic legal education should include instruction in how to find and read the law. Anything less is a failed legal education.

Exactly how special are legal research skills? Are they special enough to warrant certification? As a matter of fact, the act of legal researching is so intimately connected with …

Reflections On The Art Of Mentoring, Richard Leiter

Marvin and Virginia Schmid Law Library

I know that there are probably many articles on the subject of mentoring. Many of these articles have been written by colleagues, or recognized experts in the field of management. However, I have not read these articles and in advance I apologize for not reading them all or using them as references in the following essay. I come from a school of thought about management that believes that good managers are not made. They are born. This is not to say that we can't learn things about management. The fact is, we learn a great deal from others when we …

Reflections On Ranganathan’S Five Laws Of Library Science, Richard Leiter

Marvin and Virginia Schmid Law Library

This article is adapted from a column that I wrote for Legal Assistant Today in 1996. The column’s audience was legal assistants, some of whom, I discovered over my seven years as a columnist for the publication, had responsibility for managing law firm libraries or library resources in addition to their other duties. So from time to time my column drifted into advice about managing libraries. This particular column came about at a time when I was mentoring some younger librarians and discovered to my surprise that they did not know of Ranganathan’s Five Laws of Library Science. When I …
