The Influence Of Editorials Is Increasing, Lawrence A. Keating Jun 1926

The Influence Of Editorials Is Increasing, Lawrence A. Keating

Bachelors’ Theses

Doubtless the average individual would experience grave difficulty in defining the term "editorial" or the words "editorial matter." Although he reads editorials and editorial matter daily in his newspapers, although he utilizes evenings in scanning the offerings of modern periodicals, he would be at a loss to define clearly what "editorial" means, what an editorial is.

The Origin And Development Of Imagistic Poetry In Modern American Literature, With Special Reference To Its Artistic Limitations, Olive M. Pfefferle Jun 1926

The Origin And Development Of Imagistic Poetry In Modern American Literature, With Special Reference To Its Artistic Limitations, Olive M. Pfefferle

Bachelors’ Theses

Perhaps one of the strongest proofs that any idea or movement is worth considering lies in the fact that the conservatives have become alarmed and have arisen in protest. For their ranks are so small that they have little influence except to concentrate the attention of the public on such questions as are disturbing them. This must be the reason, then, for the wide-spread interest in the "new movement" in poetry. It has been criticized and condemned as much as, if not more than, any new idea or movement that has ever originated, until poets, as well as readers, have …

The Influence Of Ibsen On The English Drama; With Reference To Pinero And Shaw, Elvira Ritter Jun 1926

The Influence Of Ibsen On The English Drama; With Reference To Pinero And Shaw, Elvira Ritter

Bachelors’ Theses

The modern Theatre is the Theatre of experiment. It is a product of the age of Reason, in which everything is looked on with suspicion until a plausible scientific theory is advanced to dignify it with the garb of authority. At a time when the critical and uncritical people which make up any audience preferred to have all articles labeled before purchasing, this pigeonholing mania had been advanced to the extent of naming dramatists, novelists, and poets according to their type of thinking.

The Conflict Of The Stoic And The Epicurean In Horace, Eleanore Frances Carpenter Jun 1926

The Conflict Of The Stoic And The Epicurean In Horace, Eleanore Frances Carpenter

Bachelors’ Theses

In the estimation of many, the classics are all a waste of precious time and a needless expenditure of energy. If one should suggest to those same people that Horace could visit the twentieth century and not be a curiosity in regard to his philosophy of life, they would probably look at you askance and murmur things about absurdities. It is not strange, however, that we should find Horace and his philosophy of life interesting when we peruse the pages of history only to realize that human nature has remained the same throughout the ages despite the succession of wonders …

The Relation Of Painting To Poetry With Reference To The Works Of Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Helen Marie Friar Jun 1926

The Relation Of Painting To Poetry With Reference To The Works Of Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Helen Marie Friar

Bachelors’ Theses

Art may be defined as the adequate and harmonious expression of some phase of man's life in true relation to the whole. Architecture, sculpture, painting, music and poetry are the five principal five arts. Each of these fulfills its own function and in addition is united with the others in a common bond through the pleasure which is their aim.

A Comparative Study Of The Stoicism Of Seneca And Marcus Aurelius, Helen Caroline Boemer Jun 1926

A Comparative Study Of The Stoicism Of Seneca And Marcus Aurelius, Helen Caroline Boemer

Bachelors’ Theses

Socrates it was who taught men to think aright, to love knowledge and goodness, to realize the worth of friendship, courage and wisdom. To him as a consequence many subsequent philosophers went for their ideas. Hence after his death we find that many schools of philosophy came into existence. Besides the schools of Plato, Aristotle and Epicurus, there arose also the Cynic School of Antisthenes and the Megaric School of Euclid, all of which incorporated some of the fundamental doctrines of Socrates or contained elements of pre-Socratic systems, modified by the influence of their common master.

The Financial And Economical Aspects Of The World War, Aileen Louise Esser Jun 1926

The Financial And Economical Aspects Of The World War, Aileen Louise Esser

Bachelors’ Theses

A war period necessarily forces the consideration of many important problems. The greatest of these might well be called "the financial difficulty." Seemingly there are greater and graver situations but upon contemplating them, we are forced to acknowledge that it is the financial problem which carries on or closes a war. This difficulty affects not only the fighting forces but the general populous as well.

Sensationalism In Dickens, Lorraine Catherine Kusta Jun 1926

Sensationalism In Dickens, Lorraine Catherine Kusta

Bachelors’ Theses

Dickens once said, that a book of all things ought " to stand, by itself. It is a picture of life but one that not only portrays but shows the significance of its subject. Its form is uniquely elastic because its art is the handmaid of its purpose which is to illustrate the true and aggrandize the good, as well as to express the beautiful. Its sole artistic standard is fitness; its measure the adaptedness of means to end. Dealing in this way with all of life, it is not sufficient for the novelist to love like Keats "the principle …

The Unification Of Germany Under The Leadership Of Bismarck, Virginia Katherine Hunt Jun 1926

The Unification Of Germany Under The Leadership Of Bismarck, Virginia Katherine Hunt

Bachelors’ Theses

The hand of Otto Von Bismarck was the hand that fashioned the German ship of state. It was Bismarck, who, out of huddled mass of little states, created the great German Empire. With the aid of indefatigable energy, clear foresight, an almost superhuman perseverance in the face of seemingly insurmountable obstacles, he brought his country out of obscurity and gave her a place in the universe.

Virgil's Legacy To Milton, Margaret Mary Nagle Jun 1926

Virgil's Legacy To Milton, Margaret Mary Nagle

Bachelors’ Theses

Poetry is vitally the translation or interpretation of life in its highest terms. In its advance through the centuries, it gives expression to man's attempt to find, under the confused appearance of things as we see them, life's real truth and beauty. Latin poetry is one of the great incarnations of this endless progress through the ages and the Prince of Poets, Virgil, stands in one of the foremost places in the line of torch-bearers. The masterpieces of Latin literature are of great importance in the present age. They are supreme works of art,of an excellence unsurpassed and in some …

The Industrial Advertising Dollar, Arthur H. Nicolaus Jun 1926

The Industrial Advertising Dollar, Arthur H. Nicolaus

Bachelors’ Theses

Although our time may be called the era of big business and extensive advertising, I believe that the day of intensive advertising is still young. Millions have been expended on placing selling copy before the reader and a surprising amount of that expenditure has been spent without any economic calculation of its return.

Cicero's Belief In The Immortality Of The Soul, Madeleine Julian Donahue Jun 1926

Cicero's Belief In The Immortality Of The Soul, Madeleine Julian Donahue

Bachelors’ Theses

In the darkness before the dawn of Christianity, Marcus Tullius Cicero, the pagan philosopher and moralist, lived. He was of that last generation~ floundering in a world devoid of all religion, blank as to any ideas of a God. Religion only meant gods as things to swear by, or things to be amused by, or things from which, if times were bad, some doubtful assistance might perchance come. It was a century in which the old religions had lost their hold, and Christianity had not yet emerged.
