A Historical Magazine Study Of The First Year Of The Spanish Civil War, June, 1936, To August, 1937 As Adapted From A Comparative Survey Of The News And Editorial Content Of The Commonweal And The Nation, Joseph A. Kneeland
Bachelors’ Theses
Probably no major event has provoked more divergent reports and opinions than the Spanish Civil war. To attempt to reach a basis of fact in the early events of the war upon which to build future opinion, to remove the aloud of propaganda hanging over the events of the war in order that they might be more understandable was the desire of the author. To do this best, current weekly magazines which did not dwell upon the actual maneuvers of the war, but attempted to estimate the significance of the events, were chosen. The Commonweal and the Nation, two well-established …

A Survey Of Advertising Copy Appeals As Seen In The Milwaukee Journal From January, 1937 To January, 1938, Frances M. Revere
Bachelors’ Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to show what copy appeal are current in present day advertising columns as exemplified by advertising appearing in the Milwaukee Journal for the year, 1937. Advertising copy may be divided into many categories, but the most obvious are the distinct groups which appeal either to the senses or to reason. If this thesis does no more than break down these groups as displayed on the newspaper page and analyze them for their individuating traits, then it will have accomplished its purpose.
Interpretations Given To Freedom Of The Press As Guaranteed In The Constitution Of The U.S., Howard M. Paul
Interpretations Given To Freedom Of The Press As Guaranteed In The Constitution Of The U.S., Howard M. Paul
Bachelors’ Theses
Volumes have been written on Freedom of the Press. If we were so inclined, we might trace the development of Press liberty in Great Britain back to the sixteenth century establishment of religious toleration and its subsequent influence on the toleration of printed material. We might dwell on the early licensing of the Press in our own Massachusetts colony. We might tell how early editors, among them James and Benjamin Franklin, fell victims to the licensing system. Above all, we might consider the case of John Peter Zenger and his trial, the outstanding landmark in the Press liberty struggle between …
The Press And The Radio, Paul F. Thielen
The Press And The Radio, Paul F. Thielen
Bachelors’ Theses
With the development of a new media of communication -- the radio -- the status of the newspaper is necessarily affected. As a purveyor of news, and probably more important, of advertising, the radio's entrance into daily life of 122,000,000 Americans may constitute a serious competitive threat to the Fourth Estate. Whether the radio will ever replace the newspaper is a matter of discussion in editorial and broadcasting groups at the present time, and its possibility of relegating the press to the status of a second-rank media of news distribution is a matter that is looked upon with more than …
The Spanish Civil War As Carried By The Milwaukee Leader From July 18, 1936, To August 1, 1937, Howard F. Bell
The Spanish Civil War As Carried By The Milwaukee Leader From July 18, 1936, To August 1, 1937, Howard F. Bell
Bachelors’ Theses
All copies of the Milwaukee Leader were examined from July 18, 1936 to August 1, 1937, in an effort to determine how this daily paper handled stories of the Spanish Civil War during the first twelve months of civil repercussion. Not every edition of the Leader carried war stories, but every issue containing war news was noted, the column length measured in inches, and a comparative chart graphed indicating relation ship between the amount of straight news, pictures and editorials. Supplementary charts show the incidence of war news over a thirteen month period, and comparative analysis of war stories into …
The Coverage Of The Spanish Civil War By The New York Times From July 1, 1936, To January 1, 1937, Frank J. Becker
The Coverage Of The Spanish Civil War By The New York Times From July 1, 1936, To January 1, 1937, Frank J. Becker
Bachelors’ Theses
The purpose was to determine whether the New York Times was fair and unprejudiced in its presentation of the news concerning the Spanish Civil war during the first six months of the conflict.
A Bibliography Of Books And Magazine Articles Pertaining To The History Of Journalism, George Joseph Belhumeur
A Bibliography Of Books And Magazine Articles Pertaining To The History Of Journalism, George Joseph Belhumeur
Bachelors’ Theses
The History of Journalism, whether tied up with men or with newspapers, is of untold value to the practicing journalist. He may find some information that would help in a particular story, but that would seldom happen. Inspiration is the big thing to be had from the histories of Journalism. To know what others have encountered, how they overcame difficulties, how papers have risen and fallen, and why, ---- these will be of incalculable value.
