Intercountry Adoption In Guatemala: Implications Of The Hague Convention, Kathleen Smallwood
Intercountry Adoption In Guatemala: Implications Of The Hague Convention, Kathleen Smallwood
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
The recent growing popularity of intercountry adoptions between the United States and Guatemala has increased opportunities for corruption. As a result, policies have been created in order to decrease instances of corruption. The current policy recently ratified by the United States is the Hague Convention on Intercountry Adoption, which makes strides toward improving the situation, but at a cost. The anticipated ratification of the Hague in 2008 has led to a reduction in the number of adoptions between the United States and Guatemala and all adoptions ceased once the U.S. implemented the convention. This study analyzes current opinions concerning the …

Synthesizing Gauguin: A Comparative Look At Cultural Contexts And Gauguin’S Tahitian Paintings, Joanna Miller
Synthesizing Gauguin: A Comparative Look At Cultural Contexts And Gauguin’S Tahitian Paintings, Joanna Miller
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
When a plethora of primary sources exist from an artist, a tendency persists for the art historian to focus on an artist’s personality when analyzing or interpreting that artist’s work. In the case of Paul Gauguin and his Tahitian works, his personality faults, extreme character, and uncouth notions and motivations become the concentration of much scholarship and can lead to a misjudgment of the artist’s depiction of the Tahitian natives and culture. This paper examines how Gauguin represented a foreign peoples and met the goals he pursued under Primitivism, Symbolism, and Synthetism by analyzing the cultural contexts of Fin-de-siecle France …

The Exploitation Of Women In Mexico's Maquiladoras, Jennifer Gibbs
The Exploitation Of Women In Mexico's Maquiladoras, Jennifer Gibbs
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Maquiladora factories, created in 1965 as part of Mexico's Border Industrialization Program, have become the backbone of economic progress along the United StateslMexico boundary. These factories, largely owned by foreign investors, have drawn thousands ofwomen from Mexico's interiors to work in the area. As a result, globalization and increased foreign investment have created cultural, environmental, and occupational hardships and hazards for female Mexican laborers despite the monetary gains that have resulted from Mexican and United States government programs.
