Assessing Political Risk In Less Developed Countries, Asayehgn Desta Dec 1984

Assessing Political Risk In Less Developed Countries, Asayehgn Desta

Asayehgn Desta

Corporate investment in less developed countries can be a lucrative source of resources and earnings. But how does one minimize the risks—particularly the political risks? The current trend in risk‐assessment methodology is to use “hard data” rather than subjective analysis. But this can be a drawback because the quantitative methodologies used are often determined by the data available. Presented here is a framework for political risk assessment that does more than simply look at the numbers.

Higher Education: Labor Market Linkage, Asayehgn Desta Jan 1982

Higher Education: Labor Market Linkage, Asayehgn Desta

Asayehgn Desta

"It is clear from government documents that in the last 2 decades, post-secondary education institutions have expanded at a dramatic rate in many African countries, either to meet the need for using locals in high-level posts predominantly held by expatriates or to meet social demand.

Studies now indicate that in most African countries, shortages of manpower are giving way to a surplus of university graduates at a more rapid rate than was originally envisaged" ~ from the article

A Socioeconomic Analysis Of Schooling In Ethiopia, Asayehgn Desta

Asayehgn Desta

Purpose is to trace historically how changes in the Ethiopian educational system correspond to changes in the socioeconomic structure. The first section of this paper surveys the themes of correspondence and contradiction. Section two discusses major changes in Ethiopian socioeconomic structure from 1900. Section three presents changes in the educational system which correspond to those changes in the socio-economic structure. Section four examines the major socioeconomic changes of the fascist occupation period (1935-1941) and includes a brief discussion of the fascist educational policy. Section five presents the major socioeconomic changes during the post-independence period (1941-1947), followed by a discussion of …

Socio-Economic And Educational Reforms In Ethiopia (1942-1974): Correspondence And Contradiction, Asayehgn Desta

Asayehgn Desta

Using the theory of correspondence and contradiction, the author analyzes the interaction between socioeconomic and educational changes in Ethiopia from 1942 to 1974. An introductory section sets forth the principles of correspondence and contradiction, which refer to how the means of economic production determine conditions in the noneconomic "superstructure" of society and how the superstructure in turn acts on the means of production, creating contradictions between the two. Section 2 traces Ethiopia's major socioeconomic changes from 1941 to 1974, including the incorporation of the economy into the world market economy, economic stagnation, the emergence of foreign-dominated commercial farms and industries, …

The Viability Of African Socialism As A Strategy For Development, Asayehgn Desta Dec 1978

The Viability Of African Socialism As A Strategy For Development, Asayehgn Desta

Asayehgn Desta

Many Africanists have shown serious concern about African socialism and have challenged African socialism, as a concept, from both theoretical and practical point of view. This study argues that most of the criticisms raised against African socialism are out of context and ahistorical. A careful analysis and the steps taken by socialist African states clearly signifies that African socialism is an identifiable body of thought and an appropriate course of action for African countries to follow in order to embark on socialist transformation.

The Role Of Women In Tanzania: Their Access To Higher Education And Participation In The Labour Force, Asayehgn Desta Dec 1978

The Role Of Women In Tanzania: Their Access To Higher Education And Participation In The Labour Force, Asayehgn Desta

Asayehgn Desta

A self-administered questionnaire given to 526 postsecondary students and 424 employed university graduates provides data on the participation of Tanzanian women in higher education and in the work force. Research shows that Tanzanian women students are more likely than men to come from more developed regions, reside in urban areas, have relatively well-educated and highly paid parents in professional or administrative occupations, and be enrolled in courses that reflect stereotypical ideas of women's role. Though women initially earn as much as men, they wait longer for initial employment, and pay differentials between the sexes increase over time in favor of …

Schooling For Alienation: The Ethiopian Experience, Asayehgn Desta Dec 1978

Schooling For Alienation: The Ethiopian Experience, Asayehgn Desta

Asayehgn Desta

Conducted with 1500 randomly selected Ethiopian twelfth grade students, this study explored reasons for student alienation in Ethiopia. Data were collected through a self-administered questionnaire. Findings indicated that students are more alienated when they perceive the school environment to be closed. Students who were more anxious about passing the highly selective Ethiopian School Leaving Certificate Examination were more alienated than those less anxious, suggesting that this test is a cause of alienation. Students in institutions with lower prestige felt more alienated, reflecting perhaps their knowledge that students from such institutions have a smaller chance for later success. Finally, the most …

Schooling And Inequality In Pre-Revolutionary Ethiopia, Asayehgn Desta Dec 1977

Schooling And Inequality In Pre-Revolutionary Ethiopia, Asayehgn Desta

Asayehgn Desta

"In the past, the naive observer could only be impressed that Ethiopia offed free education through the university level. In many cases, students were even furnished small stipends to subsist (Abir, 1970). However, an examination of the educational profile of prerevolutionary Ethiopia reveals that it was characterized by a low school attendance and sexual inequality. The dropout rate was very high, and unemployment among high school graduates was quite conspicuous. The purpose of this study is to highlight the lack of educational opportunity that existed in prerevolutionary Ethiopia." ~ from the article

"A Rose Is A Rose Is A Rose": The Definition Debate, Norman Powell

Norman W. Powell

There has been much discussion and debate among child care workers about the definition of "child care workers." Who is a child care worker? What does the child care worker do with children that is unique and different from the teacher, nurse, the social worker, or the psychologist does?
