A Popular auxiliary service provided by hospitality businesses is automatic merchandising, more commonly known as vending. Recent advancement in vending technology (v-commerce) has changed the way vending machines are monitored, replenished, maintained, and reconciled. As the hospitality industry searches to reduce its reliance on labor intensive processes, automatic merchandising represents and effective way to provide unattended points of sale and service. Smart machines featuring quality products with high levels of auditabile control may me more appealing to the hospitality industry. Rapid tourism development in China has led to an influx of hotels invested in and operated by multi-national hotel companies. In the late 1970s, the People's Republic of China announced its "Open Door Policy. "After being closed to the outside world for decades, the Western world was not certain what to make of this turnaround. The author looks at a number of questions: Was China sincere in its statements that it wanted foreign investment on its soil? Was it willing to provide the economic and legal framework within which foreign investors could feel secure about placing their investment dollars? The proliferation of legalized gaming has significantly changed the nature of the hospitality industry. While several aspects of gaming have flourished, none has become more popular, profitable, or technologically advanced as the slot machine. While more than half of all casino gambling, and earnings, is generated by slot machines, little has been written about the technology integral to these devices. The author describes the workings of computer-controlled slot machines and exposes some of the popular operating myths.

Tourist often want to experience their hosts' culture including cuisines. Their reactions can be negatively influenced by vastly different customs which confront them. What can be done, for example, when traditional food serving styles violate the tourist's sanitation standards?
