The Relation Between Globalization And Personal Values Across 53 Countries And 28 Years, Irina Florentina Cozma
The Relation Between Globalization And Personal Values Across 53 Countries And 28 Years, Irina Florentina Cozma
Doctoral Dissertations
The aim of this research is to examine the relation between the change in globalization and change in personal values (work and general life values). An analysis across 28 years and 53 countries suggests that changes in different personal values have different relations with the change in globalization. Moreover, this relation is influenced by the demographic characteristics of the sample. The present research contributes to the literature in the following ways: 1) linking globalization (an economic concept) and personal values (a psychological concept), 2) providing an analysis of the relation between the change in personal values and the change in …
Relationships Between Externalization Behaviors And Team Cognition Variables In Distributed Teams, Lisa Ann Delise
Relationships Between Externalization Behaviors And Team Cognition Variables In Distributed Teams, Lisa Ann Delise
Doctoral Dissertations
Members of distributed teams often have difficulty sharing unique information with their teammates during decision making tasks. These communication problems may hinder the development of cognitions that allow team members to reach a similar understanding of the content and structure of task information. The C-MAP intervention (Rentsch, Delise, & Hutchison, 2008) was designed to assist team members in sharing their information through behaviors that convey the content and structure of information by using specific communication behaviors and developing a knowledge object. In the present study, the knowledge object took the form of a white board where information was posted and …
Temporal Patterns Of Functional And Dysfunctional Employee Turnover, Matthew Scott Fleisher
Temporal Patterns Of Functional And Dysfunctional Employee Turnover, Matthew Scott Fleisher
Doctoral Dissertations
This study examined temporal patterns in collective employee turnover over a 75 month interval. Time series models were fit to subgroups of functional and dysfunctional turnover. Dysfunctional turnover was defined as voluntary separation among high and average performers and functional turnover was defined as voluntary separation of low performers. Results provided support for the hypothesis that temporal patterns of functional and dysfunctional turnover differ. Patterns among high and average performers were similar, such that employee turnover across several global regions increased during or near July. In contrast, employee turnover among low performers tended to spike during or soon after October. …
The Moderating Effect Of Reciprocity Beliefs On Work Outcomes, Stephanie Hastings
The Moderating Effect Of Reciprocity Beliefs On Work Outcomes, Stephanie Hastings
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Researchers have long assumed that employees’ reactions to treatment by their organization are guided by reciprocity norms. Eisenberger, Huntington, Hutchison, and Sowa (1986) developed a measure to assess how sensitive employees were to reciprocity obligations, focusing in particular on their beliefs that work effort should depend on treatment by the organization. Since then, research has found that this Exchange Ideology (EI) predicts variables such as organizational citizenship but cannot predict negative outcomes such as workplace deviance. Insight into why this is the case can be found by examining the related construct of reciprocity orientation. Positive (PRO) and Negative Reciprocity Orientation …
Workplace Commitment And Employee Well-Being: A Meta-Analysis And Study Of Commitment Profiles, Elyse R. Maltin
Workplace Commitment And Employee Well-Being: A Meta-Analysis And Study Of Commitment Profiles, Elyse R. Maltin
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Employee commitments have been connected to a multitude of organizationally- relevant variables, including turnover, absenteeism, job performance, and organizational citizenship behaviours (e.g., Meyer, Stanley, Herscovtich, & Topolnytsky, 2002). Research has repeatedly demonstrated that the form these commitments take matters; that is, research has shown that commitment based on a mindset of affective attachment has the strongest positive relations with desired outcomes, while commitment based on mindsets of social or economic costs has much weaker and sometimes even negative relations with these same outcomes.
Far less research exists on the connection between workplace commitments and their implications for employees themselves, although …

Two Essays On Managerial Incentives, Hui Liang
Two Essays On Managerial Incentives, Hui Liang
Doctoral Dissertations
Jensen and Meckling (1976) and Jensen (1986) argue that the separation of ownership and control may generate agency problems between managers and shareholders. The equity-based compensation, by tying managerial wealth to firm long-run stock performance, can incentivize managers to be more receptive to undertaking value-increasing financial policies and to improving firm performance therefore can be used as an effective tool to achieve consonance between managers actions and shareholders interest. Over the last two decades, the increased prevalence of equity-based compensation in the form of stock and options, is partially due to an increased acceptance of the alignment effect of equity-based …
Stability And Change In Goal Orientation And Their Relationship With Performance: Testing Density Distributions Using Latent Trait-State Models, Michael Charles Mihalecz
Stability And Change In Goal Orientation And Their Relationship With Performance: Testing Density Distributions Using Latent Trait-State Models, Michael Charles Mihalecz
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
Goal orientation has been proposed to influence a number of training and work outcomes. However, results have been inconsistent and predicted relationships are weaker than anticipated (Payne, Youngcourt & Beaubien, 2007). Weak findings may be due to inconsistencies in how goal orientation is conceptualized and operationalized (DeShon & Gillespie, 2005; Grant & Dweck, 2003; Kaplan & Maehr, 2007). One such inconsistency is the treatment of goal orientation as a stable trait or a malleable state. Issues of state-versus-trait have long fueled the person-situation debate in personality psychology. Fleeson (2001) offered a solution for integrating the two theoretical perspectives called the …
A Social Relations Analysis Of Transactive Memory In Groups, Sarah J. Ross
A Social Relations Analysis Of Transactive Memory In Groups, Sarah J. Ross
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Transactive memory is the knowledge of what others in a group know and the exchange of that knowledge. In groups with effective transactive memory systems, members know “who knows what”, send knowledge to the appropriate individuals, and develop strategies for retrieving that information (Mohammed & Dumville, 2001; Wegner, 1995). Transactive memory studies tend to focus on the group as a whole, but useful information might be gathered by investigating transactive memory in dyads within groups. The purpose of this research was to use the social relations model (Kenny & LaVoie, 1984) as the basis for operationalizing transactive memory and …

At the foundation of this discussion is the Organizational Creativity Actualization Model (OCAM). This model considers organizational creativity as a system of …
An Examination Of The Stability Of Positive Psychological Capital Using Frequency-Based Measurement, Elizabeth Anne Mcgee
An Examination Of The Stability Of Positive Psychological Capital Using Frequency-Based Measurement, Elizabeth Anne Mcgee
Doctoral Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to explore the utility of frequency-based measurement as an alternative method for examining the stability of psychological capital, a higher-order construct introduced by Luthans and colleagues (2007), consisting of self-efficacy, hope, resilience, and optimism. Frequency-based measurement is a new approach based on the distributional assessment model (Kane, 1986; 2000) that provides information on the relative frequency of occurrence for specific behaviors over a given period of time, and offers a distribution that depicts the scope of an individual’s behavior. One advantage of this approach is that it can provide information on a person’s behavior …
Personality Traits And Career Decidedness: An Empirical Study Of University Students, Ryan M. Smith
Personality Traits And Career Decidedness: An Empirical Study Of University Students, Ryan M. Smith
Doctoral Dissertations
Research on vocational behavior has made progress in identifying broad personality traits associated with career indecision; however, important questions remain unanswered about the temporal stability of relationships between broad personality traits and Career Decidedness (CD), and about the role of narrow personality traits as predictors of CD, both of which were addressed in this longitudinal field study. A total of 2,046 undergraduate students completed an online personality inventory and CD questionnaire. A sub-group (N=267) responded to a follow-up questionnaire seven months later. Results indicated, as hypothesized, that CD correlated positively with the broad (Big Five) personality traits, openness, conscientiousness, and …
Exploring Individual And Organizational Level Antecedents Of Experienced Workplace Incivility, Sara Ann Terlicki
Exploring Individual And Organizational Level Antecedents Of Experienced Workplace Incivility, Sara Ann Terlicki
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
The present research explored antecedents of experienced workplace incivility, specifically, the individual characteristics of agreeableness, negative affectivity, and emotional stability, and organizational (work) characteristics including social and contextual factors. Three competing models linking these antecedents to experienced workplace incivility were developed. One hundred seventy six participants were included in the final sample. Participants were recruited directly from companies and through an internet-based snowball sampling approach. Participants completed a questionnaire to assess experienced workplace incivility and dispositional individual and work characteristics. The results indicated that individual and work characteristics are important antecedents of experienced workplace incivility. However, work characteristics, specifically social …
Evaluating The Benefits Of Expressive Writing Interventions On Workplace Variables : Job Satisfaction, Stress, And Perceived Well-Being, Amparo Sadovnik
Evaluating The Benefits Of Expressive Writing Interventions On Workplace Variables : Job Satisfaction, Stress, And Perceived Well-Being, Amparo Sadovnik
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
The following thesis project outlines the possible benefits of the use of different types of writing interventions on workplace variables. The objective of this research project was to find supporting evidence to the idea that writing interventions such as traditional multisession writing activities, and one-time expressive letter writing, can help individuals enhance their perceived well-being, decrease their perceived levels of stress, and improve their job satisfaction. Sixty three participants from an undergraduate student population at a local state university, including 55 females and with an average age of 23 years, were asked to either write three consecutive times about a …
Authentic Leadership In Sports Teams, Greg Houchin
Authentic Leadership In Sports Teams, Greg Houchin
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Authentic leadership includes a positive moral perspective characterized by high ethical standards that guide decision making and behavior. The measurement of authentic leadership is aimed at a leader’s ability to be genuine. This study identified and analyzed authentic leaders on sports teams. Group cohesion was also assessed. The purpose was to determine whether authentic leadership would lead to performance when mediated by team cohesion and trust. Survey analyses were used to assess several teams. Results indicated that sports teams may benefit from training in authentic leadership. Authentic leadership predicts higher levels of trust, team cohesion, and group performance.
The Effects Of Body Characteristics On Perceived Competence, Courtney Michelle Kneip
The Effects Of Body Characteristics On Perceived Competence, Courtney Michelle Kneip
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of different body characteristics on perceived competence; specifically, height, weight, and physical appearance. Participants were asked to login to their online school accounts and were then directed to a specific survey. All surveys consisted of the same questions, but included a different photograph. Participants then listened to a pre-recorded speech after being told that the individual in the photograph was the individual giving the speech. All surveys asked participants to rate judgments of height, weight, and physical appearance, compared to the average American. The speech provided the basis for the …
Faking In Personality Assessments: An Investigation Of A Method Factor Measure Of Faking, Raven Lynnette Worthy
Faking In Personality Assessments: An Investigation Of A Method Factor Measure Of Faking, Raven Lynnette Worthy
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
The goal of this study was to assess the efficacy of a newly developed "method factor" measure of faking to control for the effects of faking when personality tests are used to predict performance criteria. Traditional measures of faking, such as social desirability scales, have not been found to adequately control for faking. This study assessed the adequacy of the newly developed measure. When controlling for faking, as measured by the method factor, the validity of conscientiousness as a predictor of undergraduate GPA was larger. Additionally, the nature of the method factor across experimental conditions was investigated. The method factor …
Factors Contributing To Young Worker Atod Use Both And Off The Job, Sara Michelle Martin
Factors Contributing To Young Worker Atod Use Both And Off The Job, Sara Michelle Martin
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
The present study was designed to evaluate whether workplace factors such as permissive culture or workplace stress are associated with the day-to-day use of alcohol, tobacco or other drugs (ATOD) among young adult workers (N = 187). Previous research has found stronger relationships between ATOD use and workplace factors when ATOD use was measured on and off the job separately. To isolate on the job factors from off the job ATOD use, participants were asked to complete daily diary entries regarding their workday. It was predicted that workers who report stressful workdays and ATOD-tolerant workplace cultures will report more ATOD …
The Influence Of Identity Salience On Cross-Generational Perspectives Of Work Life Balance, Cherise Nicole White
The Influence Of Identity Salience On Cross-Generational Perspectives Of Work Life Balance, Cherise Nicole White
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
The goal of this study is to test a new model of work life (nonwork) balance (WLB) that may explain individual and cross-generational differences in views of WLB. A prominent feature within this model, identity salience, is described as the values and importance a person attaches to the multiple roles they manage. This study addresses one of the major causes for inconsistency in the existing WLB research by examining how and why perceptions of WLB differ depending on the life stage of sample participants. The model was supported and findings suggest that individual perceptions of work life balance are contingent …
Perceptions Of Gender Roles In The Advertising Industry, Cristina Perez Balitaan
Perceptions Of Gender Roles In The Advertising Industry, Cristina Perez Balitaan
Honors Capstone Projects - All
The advertising industry since its inception has been saturated with male views and opinions, consequently manifesting in the sexual objectification of women. However, with more career opportunities for women in recent years, more women are choosing to engage in non-traditional careers, such as the fields of advertising and marketing. Yet, despite the growing female population within the advertising industry, the content of advertising still continues to be filled with gender stereotypes. To understand how female advertisers negotiate their gender role and their role as a media producer, I surveyed female advertising students of S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications (N=100) …
The Creative Coach: Exploring The Synergies Between Creative Problem Solving: Thinking Skills Model And Non-Directive Coaching, Trevor J. Mcalpine
The Creative Coach: Exploring The Synergies Between Creative Problem Solving: Thinking Skills Model And Non-Directive Coaching, Trevor J. Mcalpine
Creativity and Change Leadership Graduate Student Master's Projects
This project looks at the similarities and differences between the most recent version of Creative Problem Solving called Creative Problem Solving: Thinking Skills Model and the approach to coaching known as Non-Directive Coaching. Creativity practitioners are challenged to find opportunities of engaging in formal full-blown, group-based Creative Problem Solving sessions. There is a need to find other, less formal ways of helping people use their creativity. The Thinking Skills Model’s design allows it to mesh with the creative process in other content areas by making the basic concepts of Creative Problem Solving transferable to those other contexts. Non-Directive Coaching …

It also analyzes the effectiveness of the communication strategies in place to communicate the goals and priorities of the organization.
Effects Of Interpreter Use On Rapport And Humint Collection, James E. Driskell Iii
Effects Of Interpreter Use On Rapport And Humint Collection, James E. Driskell Iii
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
The aim of this research was to examine how the introduction of a third party impacts interviewee rapport in an investigative setting. Prior to this research it has been speculated that a "third person in the communications loop" during an investigative interview may negatively impact critical components of the collection process, including the establishment of rapport. There are several advantages to the approach offered. First, it addresses the current concern of how the use of interpreters affects the quality, quantity, and nature of information collected from human sources. Second, it examines the construct of rapport, a core aspect of the …

The Role Of Supervisor-Supervisee Cultural Differences, Supervisor Multicultural Competence, And The Supervisory Working Alliance In Supervision Outcomes: A Moderated Mediation Model, Stephanie A. Crockett
Counseling & Human Services Theses & Dissertations
As the United States population grows more diverse, many counseling professionals have called for attention to the cultural issues present in clinical supervision. Existing research suggests that the supervisor's level of multicultural competence and the strength of the supervisory working alliance may affect the relationship between supervisor-supervisee cultural differences on supervision outcomes. Accordingly, the study sought to address how cultural differences between the supervisor and supervisee, supervisor multicultural competence, and the supervisory working alliance impact supervisee counseling self-efficacy and satisfaction with supervision.
The study examined the plausibility of a moderated mediation model, derived from the literature, using a sample of …
Utilizing A Web-Based Career Development Workshop To Address Career Decision-Making Difficulty Among Community College Distance Learners, Johanna Michele Brown
Utilizing A Web-Based Career Development Workshop To Address Career Decision-Making Difficulty Among Community College Distance Learners, Johanna Michele Brown
Educational Foundations & Leadership Theses & Dissertations
Career decision making difficulty, as it relates to undecided college students and career indecision, has been a concern for counselors and academic advisors for decades (Gordon, 2006; Mau, 2004). Individuals struggling with career indecision often seek assistance via career counseling, self-help tools, and/or computer-assisted career guidance systems (Gati, Gadassi, & Shemesh, 2005). The past decade has brought a large increase in the development of a number of web-based career guidance systems (CGS) (Bobek, Robbins, Gore, Harris-Bowlsbey, Lapan, Dahir, & Jepsen, 2005). Despite the rapid growth in the type and use of computer-assisted CGS, little empirical research has been conducted on …
Coping With Customer Sexual Harassment: Examining Retaliation As A Coping Strategy And Testing A Contextual Model, Valerie J. Morganson
Coping With Customer Sexual Harassment: Examining Retaliation As A Coping Strategy And Testing A Contextual Model, Valerie J. Morganson
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
Research has established that customer sexual harassment (CSH) is a widespread and harmful workplace phenomenon. This dissertation consists of two studies on the topic. The first sought to operationalize a measure of coping with customer sexual harassment. In addition to three traditional factors of sexual harassment coping (i.e., external, internal, and social), Study 1 predicted that worker retaliation toward the customer would constitute an additional form of coping with CSH. The measure of coping was tested using a sample of 200 women customer service workers. Data were analyzed using factor analysis. As expected, retaliation was supported as a coping strategy, …
A Conceptual Model For Employer Training To Manage Employee Counter-Productive Behaviors, Naomi Spickard Rock
A Conceptual Model For Employer Training To Manage Employee Counter-Productive Behaviors, Naomi Spickard Rock
STEMPS Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to develop a model for employer training to manage employees who possess counter-productive behaviors. With the increasing encouragement for employers to hire without discriminating, the number of individuals with disabilities in the workforce will rise. There is limited training in universities and businesses to teach how to deal with difficult individuals.
Qualitative research in the form of focus groups was conducted. The following research objectives were developed: 1) Identify components of counter-productive behaviors that need to be managed in the workplace. 2) Develop behavioral management strategies that need be learned by employers. 3) Integrate …
Social Networking And Individual Performance: Examining Predictors Of Participation, Michael Anthony Brown Sr.
Social Networking And Individual Performance: Examining Predictors Of Participation, Michael Anthony Brown Sr.
School of Public Service Theses & Dissertations
This dissertation addresses relationships between social networking and individual performance. The "act" of social networking is a process and practice by which people and organizations are drawn together by family, work or hobby to interact via websites. The explosion of these new network connections in the workplace suggests the need for an exploration of the various ways organizations can affect and improve performance and productivity.
This dissertation suggests a social networking participation model that may help organizations predict and understand the value proposition that affects acceptance or rejection of participation. Innovation adoption, governing by network and social capital are important …
A Study Of Corporate Entrepreneurship In A Department Of Defense Organization, Wade W. Brower
A Study Of Corporate Entrepreneurship In A Department Of Defense Organization, Wade W. Brower
Theses and Dissertations
What determines if an organization has a corporate entrepreneurship (CE) environment? While being entrepreneurial in a private sector job usually means a greater market share or a higher profit margin; in a public research organization, CE must be measured in other ways. This thesis evaluates a Department of Defense (DoD) organization that performs basic research. Any organization that does government or nonprofit work must continually find new ways, methods, processes, or ideas to complete the mission. In this particular study, the mission is to continue to support the warfighter with limited and changing resources—to ensure the military can maintain dominance …

Theses and Dissertations
Cloud computing is one of the hottest topics in Information Technology accounting for growth in IT spending with global revenues surging to over $130 billion in 2013. According to the Federal CIO, the U. S. Government is considered the world’s largest purchaser of information technology with spending more than $76 billion per year. Since the commercial industry uses cloud computing to reduce costs, optimize business functions and collaborate on real-time data for decision making, should the Department of Defense implement cloud computing? Research examined the possibility that cloud computing is not seen as a viable technology and if the IT …
