Recruiting Technical Talent When You’Re Not Big Tech, Neil Morelli

River Cities Industrial and Organizational Psychology Conference

In our modern, digital economy all companies are now tech companies. But how do small or regional employers source, attract, select, nurture, and close the right technical talent for roles that many large, big tech employers also recruit? This session will provide HR, talent acquisition, and functional leaders from “non-tech companies” with evidence-backed tips and tricks for filling the technical roles they need. Employers need to understand methods that will appeal to a technical audience and know how technical roles, such as software engineering, are changing with the release of generative AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT). This session will also cover …

Demystifying Generative Ai: A Talent Professional’S Guide To Using A New Tool., Tanner Landolt, Alex Mecklenburg, Jacob Leslie, Shawn Bergman

River Cities Industrial and Organizational Psychology Conference

Humans’ use of tools is nothing new. For centuries, people have been using tools and technology to increase their performance. However, the speed at which technology is changing the tools we have access to is accelerating. Artificial intelligence (AI) has quickly emerged as a new and powerful technology, and generative AI like ChatGPT and Dall-E have made AI widely accessible - and adopted - by millions of people. However, for users and non-users alike it still remains unclear what generative AI is and how this new technology fits into a practitioner’s toolkit. Like most tools, generative AI can be used …

Swipe: The Science Behind Why We Disengage (And Don’T Finish What We Start), Tracy Maylett Oct 2023

Swipe: The Science Behind Why We Disengage (And Don’T Finish What We Start), Tracy Maylett

River Cities Industrial and Organizational Psychology Conference

Why is it that some organizations attract and retain the best and brightest, yet others seem to struggle attracting talent, retaining top performers, and creating an environment in which their people choose to engage? And why is it that we leave organizations we were once so excited to be a part of? Working from a database of over 50 million employee survey responses—the largest of its kind—we discovered some of the answers to these questions. Interestingly, we also found that the same factors prompting us to engage (or disengage) in our work are the reasons we disengage in other areas …

Does Gender Moderate The Relationship Between Surface Acting And Burnout?, Cynthia Kennedy

UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair

Burnout occurs when the workplace has chronic emotional and interpersonal stressors that trigger emotional exhaustion, cynicism, and feelings of incompetence. There is a gap in burnout literature on how experiences, systemic expectations, and coping behaviors differ between females and males. Previous research suggests that comparable behaviors in male and female employees elicit different reactions from their peers. As a result, attributes such as assertiveness, generally perceived as powerful for males, are seen as abrasive for females. This mindset creates an environment where females act in a way that society expects them to remain credible. Surface acting involves the regulation of …

Student Research Opportunities In Aviation Human Factors, Jamie Barrett, Brett Torrence

National Training Aircraft Symposium (NTAS)

When most people think of jobs in aviation or at the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), they think of pilots, Air Traffic Controllers, Maintainers, etc., those directly involved in the movement of aircraft, passengers, and cargo. However, to safely move over 26K passengers (avg) daily requires many diverse occupations. Included within the complexity of aviation operations are individuals with backgrounds in Psychology, Human Factors, and Instructional Design. It is important to raise awareness of the diversity of aviation jobs and pathways to achieving those opportunities, to attract a diverse next generation workforce. The Human Factors Research Division at the Civil Aerospace …

An Aviator Centered Approach To Mental Health: A Preliminary Look At Stressors, Barriers To Care, And Untreated Aviator Mental Health, Aric J. Raus

National Training Aircraft Symposium (NTAS)

The purposeful crash of Germanwings 9525 in March 2015 provided a wake-up call to the aviation community on the ramifications of untreated mental health in commercial aviation. While the airline industry and governmental regulating bodies reacted quickly with peer-support networks and attempts to de-stigmatize seeking assistance, few actions or studies have focused on mental health from an Aviators perspective. This presentation explores the possible stressors impacting aviator mental health among three distinct aviator professional categories: Commercial Aviators, Military Aviators, and Aviators in Civilian Training Programs. After providing an overview of stressors, the discussion transitions into what is known about the …
