High Technology Industry And Material Linkages In The Toronto Region, Jim Torretto Jan 1990

High Technology Industry And Material Linkages In The Toronto Region, Jim Torretto

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This study examines the material linkage patterns of a sample of 80 high technology establishments located in the Toronto Census Metropolitan Area (CMA). The main focus of the research is to relate the spatial spread of linkages to aspects of plant structure, most notably ownership. In addition, an attempt is made to compare linkage arrangements of firms in Toronto with other regional studies of high technology industry. The results reveal the expected linkage patterns with respect to ownership. Foreign owned companies show much lower levels of purchasing and selling within the Toronto economy than domestic firms. Further dimensions of plant …

Elderly Housing Choice: A Case Study Of Brantford, Ontario, David Owen Diegel Jan 1990

Elderly Housing Choice: A Case Study Of Brantford, Ontario, David Owen Diegel

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

As Canada’s population ages, policy analysts are increasingly concerned with issues related to housing the elderly. Addressing some of these concerns, this thesis provides evidence of the characteristics of the elderly who choose to move to Senior Citizens’ Apartments (SCAs), as opposed to staying in their own homes. Choice based sampling and binary logit analysis are used to investigate the connection between the choice made and the characteristics of the elderly. The results indicate that being married and owning a car increase the odds of elderly persons staying in their own homes as opposed to moving to an SCA, while …

The Changing Canadian Inventive Spatial Economic Pattern: An Urban And Regional Analysis Between 1881 And 1986, S.L. Brian Ceh Jan 1989

The Changing Canadian Inventive Spatial Economic Pattern: An Urban And Regional Analysis Between 1881 And 1986, S.L. Brian Ceh

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Canadian urban and regional patent and trademark data was analysed between 1881 and 1986 in an attempt to distinguish spatial inventive patterns in Canada over time. Inventive activity, as a pre—condition for economic development, is a viable indicator for predicting future economic growth in an inventive spatial economy. As such, it will be possible to extend the description of spatial inventive patterns in Canada after 1986. The percentage and relative level of inventive activity in urban centers and regions in Canada will help distinguish spatial inventive patterns in Canada over time. This information was based on a 25 percent systematic …

Housing Policy And Housing Satisfaction In The People’S Republic Of China: A Behavioural Approach Applied In The City Of Xian, Jidong Zhang Jan 1987

Housing Policy And Housing Satisfaction In The People’S Republic Of China: A Behavioural Approach Applied In The City Of Xian, Jidong Zhang

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Based on the behavioural approach, this thesis examines housing satisfaction in Xian, The People’s Republic of China, and its implications for housing policy. A conceptual framework of housing satisfaction along three dimensions, housing environment system, social structure, and housing policy, is presented and discussed. From this framework a set of hypotheses are stated and subsequently tested. The strongest factor found to affect housing satisfaction is people’s living space and housing condition is another important factor. Through examining housing policy and housing satisfaction, the centrally controlled Chinese housing policies are shown to need modification and changes in housing supply should be …

The Extent To Which The Geographic Proximity, Quantity And Quality Of Contact Predicts Dimensions Of Social Support Given To Elderly Women By Their Adult Children, Lori Ann Johnson Jan 1987

The Extent To Which The Geographic Proximity, Quantity And Quality Of Contact Predicts Dimensions Of Social Support Given To Elderly Women By Their Adult Children, Lori Ann Johnson

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The purpose of this study was to assess the extent to which the frequency of contact, geographic proximity, and the quality of the relationship between elderly women and their most supportive adult child accounted for the degree of social support obtained by these women, and to evaluate the applicability of the Parental Bonding Instrument (PBI) (Parker, Tupling, & Brown, 1979) as a measure of the affectional and controlling aspects of the relationship between the two populations. One hundred noninstitutional elderly women from the City of Waterloo were interviewed in their homes and were asked to designate their most supportive adult …

An Analysis Of The Spatial And Economic Variations Of Ethnic Groups, Ontario, Jayati Ghosh Jan 1986

An Analysis Of The Spatial And Economic Variations Of Ethnic Groups, Ontario, Jayati Ghosh

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This study is concerned with six ethnic groups in the province of Ontario: the British, considered the “core group”, and the French, Italian, Indo-Chinese, Indo-Pakistani and Caribbean, the “peripheral groups.”

The principal interest of the research has been to study the ethnic mosaic in two ways, both in a core-periphery context. It was hypothesised that there has been persistence of socio-economic stratification between the British core and the peripheral groups. This thesis analyzes variation in the occupation-income between and within the ethnic immigrant groups.

The secondary objective is to examine these groups spatially, that is, in terms of a southern …

Towards The Measurement Of Regional Inequities Through Patterns Of Ideally Generated Socio-Economic Indicators, Richard C. Campbell Jan 1985

Towards The Measurement Of Regional Inequities Through Patterns Of Ideally Generated Socio-Economic Indicators, Richard C. Campbell

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Regional disparities are commonly described in terms of only one criterion when in fact they can be characterized by a number of social and economic variables. The objective of this study is to define regional data according to specific socio-economic indicators, and measure the disparities associated with them in comparison to those from ideally generated groupings. Socio-economic data from the Federal Republic of Germany was obtained from the West German Federal Institute for Regional Analysis and Planning. The variables will be grouped by factor analysis to create the indicators, and variation will be measured using analysis of variance. The ideal …

Following analysis of the data collected through questionnaires, nine recommendations are presented.

Regional Variations Among Ethnic Groups In Ontario A Core-Periphery Model, Robert George Sharpe Jan 1983

Regional Variations Among Ethnic Groups In Ontario A Core-Periphery Model, Robert George Sharpe

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This thesis performs a spatial analysis of Ontario’s structure of ethnic stratification. It examines several spatial manifestations of the contrasts in socio-economic well-being—income, education, and occupation—between Ontario’s British majority and seven ethnic minority categories. The major data source for this analysis includes published Canadian Census data and special tabulations of the 1971 Census. Regional patterns of spatial distribution shown by the various ethnic categories are described and compared using location quotients and the centrographic statistical technique. Applying a core-periphery model of regional structure and development, a tendency was found for ethnic categories of subordinate socio-economic status to be disproportionately concentrated …

Arson In Toronto: A Geographical Perspective (Ontario), James Richards Jan 1983

Arson In Toronto: A Geographical Perspective (Ontario), James Richards

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This thesis is an empirical study of the crime of arson in Toronto from a geographical perspective. Although empirical in nature there is a framework of analysis that hopefully provides a starting point for theoretical development. The study is loosely organized around the framework of four areas of arson research which include: antecedent environmental conditions, organismic variables, actual firesetting behavior, and the consequences of firesetting. To each one of these areas of research geographical analysis is possible. In most cases it was necessary in this study to incorporate the findings from the psychological and sociological literature into the geographical analysis. …

An Examination Of The Geographic And Socioeconomic Spaces Of Ethnic Groups In Toronto A Core-Periphery Perspective, Amy Chor Yee Wong Jan 1982

An Examination Of The Geographic And Socioeconomic Spaces Of Ethnic Groups In Toronto A Core-Periphery Perspective, Amy Chor Yee Wong

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The main interest of this study is the urban ethnic mosaic within the context of the core-periphery concept: its historical and spatial expressions of ethnic groups in Toronto. The study will focus on the socioeconomic contrasts—income, education, and occupation—between the major ethnic group and the subgroups. Two dimensions, those of ethnic mobility and socioeconomic characteristics, have been set up to inquire into geographic changes in ethnic groups over time and into the degree of socioeconomic polarity between the ethnic groups at one time. The basic data sources relevant to this study are both published and unpublished Canadian census data, from …

Tobago: The Spatial Development Of A Caribbean Tourist Industry, David Bruce Weaver Jan 1981

Tobago: The Spatial Development Of A Caribbean Tourist Industry, David Bruce Weaver

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Since world war two, tourism has evolved into a major industry within the Caribbean region. This development has not occurred evenly in space, and significant discrepancies in intensity exist among and within the islands. The evolution of the tourism industry on the islands of Tobago may be divided into a number of stages, including pre-touristic, early development and developmental. These constructs, based on tourist arrival and accommodation data, resemble the earlier phases of the product diffusion ‘S’-curve. Each stage is the product of a set of geographical, technological, political, cultural and economic constraints, both internal and external. As these change, …

An Analysis Of Spatial Trends And Factors Associated With Population Growth For Small Towns In Southwestern Ontario, 1961-1976, Michael Lloyd Schnare Jan 1981

An Analysis Of Spatial Trends And Factors Associated With Population Growth For Small Towns In Southwestern Ontario, 1961-1976, Michael Lloyd Schnare

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

An attempt to discover and analyze the emerging trends of urban growth represents a problem of immediate concern for geographers. However, much of this research has been concerned primarily with large urban areas. This thesis is an attempt to learn more about the dynamics of small town population change and thus, concerns itself with determining trends of small town population growth.

Specifically, this thesis investigates the differential growth patterns for selected small towns in Southwestern Ontario for the 1961–1971, and 1971–1976 periods to ascertain precisely some of the factors associated with population growth and decline, and for presenting findings that …

Perception Of Shopping Centers: An Empirical Study, Cathy Jean Burns Jan 1980

Perception Of Shopping Centers: An Empirical Study, Cathy Jean Burns

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Previous research has indicated that shopping center images consist of various components and that different images are held by consumers, retailers, and mall management. The study examines the consumers’, retailers’s, and mall managements’ images of two shopping centers in the City of Waterloo. One center is Conestoga Mall; the other is Westmount Place. Responses were obtained from shoppers, retailers, and management by use of questionnaires and interviews. The data was analyzed using Biomedical Programs (BMD), a frequency count, factor analytic work, and step-wise multiple regression. It was determined that the image components of consumers, retailers, and mall management were different …

Spread And Growth Of Newspapers In Ontario, 1781-1977, John Michael Bolton Jan 1977

Spread And Growth Of Newspapers In Ontario, 1781-1977, John Michael Bolton

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Since Louis Roy started Ontario’s first newspaper in 1793, the newspaper industry has been growing. Daily and weekly newspapers were born and either survived to the present or died at some later date. Newspapers appeared to have followed the spread of settlement throughout the province, until a saturation level was reached. After this only minor filling in occurred except in the Toronto to Hamilton region where suburban weeklies were started. The threshold population needed to support the birth of a daily or weekly appeared to fall within the 1200-2000 range and 500-1000 range respectively. The growth of newspapers was steady …

An Analysis Of Transport Services And Facilities In Northern Ontario Centres: A Qualitative Approach, Violet Konkle Jan 1977

An Analysis Of Transport Services And Facilities In Northern Ontario Centres: A Qualitative Approach, Violet Konkle

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Transportation has been considered in the discipline of geography largely within the context of distance and cost constraints, particularly with reference to industrial location decision-making processes. These costs are easily-quantifiable and measurable, and transportation geographers have tended to depend upon distance and tariff costs as the major transportation inputs in locational decision-making processes.

This dependency upon cost considerations is no longer evident in the real world. The priorities of the consignors (shippers) and consignees (customers) have shifted lately, and these distance and cost considerations are now examined in conjunction with such qualitative priorities as frequency of the consistency and reliability …

An Analysis Of The Factors Determining The Spatio-Temporal Patterns And Functional Characteristics Of Markets In The Yola Study Area, Northeast Nigeria, Ken Allison Jan 1975

An Analysis Of The Factors Determining The Spatio-Temporal Patterns And Functional Characteristics Of Markets In The Yola Study Area, Northeast Nigeria, Ken Allison

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The market, and marketplace systems, are very conventional features of the economic space and organization of developing countries. By “marketplace” is meant a specific authorized site where buyers and sellers meet at defined, regular intervals for the purpose of exchange (Good, 1971, p. 1). Nowhere are these markets as prominent as they are in Nigeria. These markets provide the setting for trading and marketing and thus play a vital role in the economic life of the country. Networks of markets serve as nodal points for the collectioon and distribution of a wide range of local and regional goods and services. …

An Inter-Regional Analysis Of The Growth Rate Of Manufacturing Employment In The Province Of Ontario, 1960–1972, Brian James Lorch Jan 1975

An Inter-Regional Analysis Of The Growth Rate Of Manufacturing Employment In The Province Of Ontario, 1960–1972, Brian James Lorch

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Despite the existence of different levels of manufacturing in the various regions of Ontario, most previous studies of this phenomenon have concentrated on explanation of its locational pattern in southern Ontario only. In contrast, though, this thesis analyzes regional variation in the growth rate of manufacturing employment in a total provincial framework. Also, its approach differs in that it examines variation in the factors which account for manufacturing employment growth and whether or not these variations are consistent over space (between regions) and through time.

The province is divided into three general regions; norther, southern and eastern, and from each …

Residential Relocation Through Expropriation: A Case Study Near Welland, Ontario, David H. Sherwood Jan 1975

Residential Relocation Through Expropriation: A Case Study Near Welland, Ontario, David H. Sherwood

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The study examines the residential relocation experiences of a group of homeowners expropriated in 1965 as the result of the realignment of the Welland Canal just outside of Welland, Ontario. It is based on interviews conducted in 1975 with 85 of the approximately 150 affected households. With Brown and Moore’s (1970) location decision model providing the conceptual framework, information was gathered on satisfaction with the expropriated home, the relocation decision process, demographic and socio-economic characteristics of the households, changes in living habits accompanying the expropriation, as well as data on the pre- and post-expropriation locations. The information is analyzed with …

Non-Resident Ownership In The Countryside Of Bruce County: A Case Of Rural Resettlement, Robert John Worrall Jan 1974

Non-Resident Ownership In The Countryside Of Bruce County: A Case Of Rural Resettlement, Robert John Worrall

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This study is concerned with the countryside facet of the non-resident ownership phenomenon. The utilization of spatio-temporal analysis in the research answered some of the questions that have arisen concerning the extent and trends associated with the non-resident ownership process.

Rather than employ one of the many diverse governmental definitions based on political ethnocentrism, this study made use of a three-part non-resident ownership definition based more on distance and the characteristics of the Burce County agricultural subsystem. Consequently, foreigners and Canadians were equally viewed as potential non-resident owners. Such a breakdown revealed that Canadian, rather than foreign non-resident ownership, has …

The Journey To Worship: A Case Study In Waterloo, Ontario, Douglas Craig Witmer Jan 1972

The Journey To Worship: A Case Study In Waterloo, Ontario, Douglas Craig Witmer

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This paper examines religious spatial interaction within an urban environment and as such contributes to the sparse literature on the Geography of Religion. It is the specific purpose to illustrate the journey to worship of households in the City of Waterloo, Ontario and to explain the spatial pattern utilizing the Principle of Least Effort.

It is discovered that if historical tension and dimensional tension are considered, one is able to predict the actual pattern of the journey to worship with seventy per cent accuracy. The fact that a large per cent of the sample attend the closest church of their …

Food Retailing And Consumer Behaviour In Waterloo, Ontario, Wayne Dennis Hilmo Jan 1971

Food Retailing And Consumer Behaviour In Waterloo, Ontario, Wayne Dennis Hilmo

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The main objective of this study is to develop a computer model to predict the food stores which individual consumers choose for the major part of their grocery purchases. It is worthwhile to develop such a predictive model for two reasons. In the first place, it is useful to be able to predict consumer store choices for purposes of retail planning. Secondly, a working predictive model illuminates the main bases of the consumer spatial choice process and thus adds to our understanding of urban spatial organization.

A basic idea of model building is that a model is a simplification of …

An Analysis Of The Economic Factors And Changes In Land-Use Associated With The Transition To A Beef Feedlot System In Waterloo County, Gary B. Griffith Jan 1971

An Analysis Of The Economic Factors And Changes In Land-Use Associated With The Transition To A Beef Feedlot System In Waterloo County, Gary B. Griffith

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The first objective of this study is to examine the transition from the traditional system of agriculture to a relatively new type of operation, the beef feedlot enterprise. This will incldue not only an examination of the actual transition but also the factors which were conducive to such a change. In this respect, the current, as well as the past position of beef in the agricultural economy, will be discussed as a contributing factor to the movement toward specialization. The views and attitudes of the framers in the study group concerning their change in vocation will also be examined and …

An Analysis Of The Spatial Distribution And Location Of Ski Resorts In Southern Ontario, John E. Lewis Jan 1967

An Analysis Of The Spatial Distribution And Location Of Ski Resorts In Southern Ontario, John E. Lewis

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The number of skiers participating in the outdoor recreation activity of skiing has increased tremendously during the past twenty years. With increased amounts of leisure time, improved means of access and mobility, greater real incomes, new technology, and an increased desire to ski, the amount of skiing being done will continue to rise in the future.

The factors that have determined the development of existing ski resort facilities appear nebulous. Some of the ski resorts established in the past have resulted in economically successful operations while others have ended in a financial loss for the owners involved as well as …
