Shipp Brushed Appliqued Ceramics, Tom Middlebrook

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

In recent years, new ceramic types have been identified and disc ussed in the archaeological literature pertaining to the Allen phase of the Angelina-Neches River drainages in East Texas, the core of the historic Hasinai Caddo area. These new types have included King Engraved, Lindsey Grooved, Mayhew Rectilinear, Spradley Brushed-Incised, Gallant Neck Banded, and Constricted Neck Punctated (Perttula and Selden 2014:43, 47-49; Marceaux 2011:140-141, 154; Jackson et al. 2012:177-180; Gregory and Avery 2007:33, 49-54). These ceramic types joined other longstanding and well-known types from the Allen phase such as Bullard Brushed, Hume Engraved, Killough Pinched, La Rue Neck Banded, and …

Ancestral Caddo Ceramics From 41wd9, 41wd14, And 41wd15, Wood County, Texas, Timothy K. Perttula

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

Earlier in 2020, Perttula published an analysis of 1010+ ancestral Caddo ceramic vessel sherds from five Wood County sites held in the Texas Archeological Research Laboratory, The University of Texas at Austin (TARL). Three of the sites were in the Lake Fork Creek basin, one was in the Big Cypress Creek basin, and the fifth site was on Li ttle Sandy Creek in the Sabine River basin. This article continues with the analysis of three other small Caddo ceramic vessel sherd assemblages from the J. O. McCreight (41WD9), B. F. Cathey (41WD14), and T. U. Shirley (41WD15) sites.

A Ripley Engraved Vessel From The Sabine River Basin, Upshur County, Texas, Timothy K. Perttula, Jim Sides Jr.

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

In this article we document an ancestral Caddo ceramic vessel that was accidentally discovered in the Sabine River basin on a camping trip, not far west-south west of Gladewater, Texas, in Upshur County. Ripley Engraved was made by Caddo potters of the Late Caddo period (ca. A.D. 1430- 1680) Titus phase. Sites of the Titus phase are known in East Texas from the Sulphur River basin on the north to the Sabine River basin on the south, but no core community of the phase is known or has been identified in this part of the Sabine River basin; such communities …

The Middle Caddo Period In East Texas: Its Age Range And Phases, Timothy K. Perttula Jan 2021

The Middle Caddo Period In East Texas: Its Age Range And Phases, Timothy K. Perttula

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

The Middle Caddo period did not come into clear focus in East Texas archaeological research until Story’s overview of the archaeology of the Western Gulf Coastal Plain. The ceramic styles and types found on Middle Caddo sites set it apart from what came before (i.e., the Early Caddo period) and what came after (the Late Caddo period). It has been generally accepted that sites of the Middle Caddo period in East Texas date from ca. A.D. 1200-1400, although site by site this is not a hard and fast temporal boundary (nor should it necessarily be). Nevertheless, it seems warranted now, …

A Turquoise Bead Necklace From The Patton Site (41hs825), Harrison County, Texas, Timothy K. Perttula

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

The Patton or Pea Patch site (41HS825) is an ancestral Caddo settlement with several habitation areas and an associated cemetery on an alluvial terrace (255 ft. amsl) of Arms Creek, a northern-flowing tributary to Big Cypress Creek in the Lake O’ the Pines area of the East Texas Pineywoods. It is known that Buddy C. Jones, later to become a professional archaeologist, located and excavated at the site in 1964, including the investigation of a total of eight burials with a number of funerary offerings. Since Jones’ work, it is also known that extensive digging of more Caddo burials (believed …

Caddo Ceramic Sherd Assemblages From Sites In Smith County, Texas, Timothy K. Perttula

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

The analysis herein of ancestral Caddo ceramic assemblages from sites in Smith County, Texas is a companion piece to the analysis of numerous ceramic collections at the Texas Archeological Research Laboratory at The University of Texas at Austin (TARL) from sites in Gregg and Wood counties, Texas. The Smith County collections were obtained in the 1930s and early 1940s by Jack Hughes, then an East Texas resident, but later a legendary Texas Panhandle archaeologist.

Substantive advancements have been made toward automating the application of landmarks and semilandmarks. These approaches can aid in expediting the landmarking process, while simultaneously reducing landmarking errors and investigator bias. This study enlists a template-based approach to quantify deviations in mesh processing outputs using a Pontchartrain dart point from the collections of the National Forests and Grasslands in Texas, which was scanned and processed at multiple resolutions using microCT and laser scanners. Following data collection and output, meshes were processed using an automated and replicable workflow. A batch processing protocol was developed in Geomagic Design X and Control X to …

The report covers a remote-sensing survey near the old mouth of the Brazos River, as part of a decades-long search for remnants of the several forts built there. Fieldwork was done in June-2020 involving ground-penetrating radar, magnetic gradiometry and electric resistance, followed by analysis and minor ground-truthing (selective excavations) through January-2021. The report also contains significant archival research done in the period since August-2019, revealing new details about the 1832 Fort Velasco location, the townsite of (old) Velasco, a Republic of Texas battery, and two Civil-War-era forts. Based on the geophysical results, it is thought that the data shows strong …

Danish Cedar Falls, Carrie Eilderts Jan 2021

Danish Cedar Falls, Carrie Eilderts

The Bridge

In 1855, Frederick Petersen’s family became the first Danish immigrants on record to settle in Cedar Falls, Iowa. The Petersens came from the Schleswig area on the Danish/German border, and in 1860, Christian Petersen came to Cedar Falls, also from Schleswig. More Danish families moved to Cedar Falls from Pine River, Wisconsin in 1866, and the next year Danes began arriving directly from their homeland after enduring a long journey by ship and train. By the early 1870s, Danes were settling in Cedar Falls in large numbers. By 1871, three hundred Danes called the city home, making up about ten …

Danish Settler-Colonial Communities In Australia And New Zealand, Julie K. Allen Jan 2021

Danish Settler-Colonial Communities In Australia And New Zealand, Julie K. Allen

The Bridge

The vast majority of Danish emigrants in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, around four hundred thousand people between 1850 and 1950, settled in the United States, from whom more than 1.3 million Americans claim descent. Significant numbers of Danes also went to other countries, however, including about 15,000 Danes who settled in Argentina; 3,500 Danes who immigrated to New Zealand, reaching their peak at one percent of the New Zealand population in 1878; and around 50,000 Danes who immigrated to Australia,1 a significant percentage of which later re-immigrated to Denmark; in 1988, approximately 165,000 people, or one percent of Australia’s …

Perceptions Of Discrimination In The Legal Profession, Sabrina Collins Jan 2021

Perceptions Of Discrimination In The Legal Profession, Sabrina Collins

Commonwealth Review of Political Science

Historically, the legal profession has been dominated by white men (García-López 2008). Over time, the barriers hindering diverse participation have been somewhat lifted. In recent years, law schools enrolled equal percentages of men and women, and the number of minority students has also increased. So, how has the legal profession adapted to these changes? The hiring of women and minorities in the field of law does not reflect the increasing diversity seen in law school. Today, only 36% of lawyers are women. While existing research shows discrimination present in the field of law, few studies have examined the relationship between …

The Role Of Dehumanization In The Nazi Era In Activating The Death Drive Resulting In Genocide, Stewart Gabel Jan 2021

The Role Of Dehumanization In The Nazi Era In Activating The Death Drive Resulting In Genocide, Stewart Gabel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Dehumanization can be defined in part as a process by which a powerful individual or group (the victimizers) actively denies or withdraws a second individual’s or group’s (the victim’s) sense of human worth or personal value. Dehumanization is an especially virulent form of denigration of the Other and is known to have harmful psychological consequences on victims.

The thesis of this dissertation is: Dehumanization, applied in an increasingly severe manner to demean, subjugate and control Jews in Nazi dominated territories during the Nazi era (1933-1945), activated a “death instinct/drive” (Freud 1920; 1923/1960; 1930) that was used to resolve an extreme …

Politics At The Pulpit: Elite Religious Cues And Immigration Attitudes, Benjamin Knoll, Matthew Baker Jan 2021

Politics At The Pulpit: Elite Religious Cues And Immigration Attitudes, Benjamin Knoll, Matthew Baker

Commonwealth Review of Political Science

Previous scholarship has demonstrated a link between religiosity and immigration attitudes, often inferring the effect of cues from religious leaders as the motivating source. This study directly examines the “elite cues” linking mechanism with an experiment embedded in a nationally representative public opinion survey. We improve on previous research designs by introducing a pretest that measures immigration policy attitudes among respondents which can then be directly compared to posttest measures after the introduction of the elite cue stimulus. Multivariate analysis of the survey results reveal no support for the elite cues explanation. We discuss the implications of these findings for …

Lives Well-Lived: My Danish American Ancestors In Shelby And Audubon Counties, Iowa, Cindy Larsen Jan 2021

Lives Well-Lived: My Danish American Ancestors In Shelby And Audubon Counties, Iowa, Cindy Larsen

The Bridge

My childhood was filled with my parents’ voices describing their love of history and knowledge of their Danish heritage in conversations that linger in my memory. My mother, Elizabeth Aagaard Larsen, and dad, Chester B. Larsen, were both children of Danish immigrants to the communities of Elk Horn and Kimballton, Iowa.

From Bornholm To Jamestown: C. C. Beck And The Settlement Of Danish Immigrants In Chautauqua County, New York And Warren County, Pennsylvania, John Everett Jones Jan 2021

From Bornholm To Jamestown: C. C. Beck And The Settlement Of Danish Immigrants In Chautauqua County, New York And Warren County, Pennsylvania, John Everett Jones

The Bridge

One of the earliest Danish immigrant settlements in North America was a community in western New York and northwestern Pennsylvania called Jamestown. Marcus P. Jacobsen has been recognized as the first person from Bornholm to settle in the Jamestown area1 in 1855 or 1856, and early on, members of this community came almost exclusively from Bornholm. However, histories have not recognized the importance of Charles C. Beck in the origin of this community. Emigration from Bornholm has been written about by Henning Bender2 this article adds to that research by situating Beck within the larger community of Danish immigrants who …

Nordlyset And The New York City Danish Community, 1891-1953, Catrine Kyster Giery Jan 2021

Nordlyset And The New York City Danish Community, 1891-1953, Catrine Kyster Giery

The Bridge

The Danish community in New York City was never more than a speck on the Big Apple. At the same time, however, New York City and the surrounding area was for decades—and still is—home to a larger number of Danish-born people than most other places in the United States. Unfortunately, New York City’s popularity among Danes has not translated into a large amount of historical research about the city’s Danish community.
