José María Panganiban’S “La Universidad De Manila” And The Liberal Campaign For Reforms In Philippine Higher Education, Javier Leonardo Rugeria
Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints
Thisarticle examines José María Panganiban’s “La Universidad de Manila” columns in La Solidaridad and discusses their five salient points of criticism of the state of higher education at the Universidad de Santo Tomás in the late nineteenth century. In view of the existing historiography, it argues that Panganiban’s critique of the university, although born out of propaganda, finds empirical grounding in his years of study at Santo Tomás from 1882 to 1888. Lastly, it illustrates that Panganiban’s columns represented a wider, liberal campaign for reforms in Philippine higher education that took place in Madrid and Barcelona from 1888 to 1891.KEYWORDS: …

Lords Of Contention: Local Conflicts In The Cathedral Chapter Of Manila In The Late Seventeenth Century, Alexandre; University Coello De La Rosa
Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints
Thisarticle focuses on ecclesiastical contentiousness in the cathedral chapters (cabildos) in the seventeenth-century Philippines. First, it demonstrates the way in which intra-elite confrontations, negotiation, and local agency among church entities molded the city of Manila as a political arena. Second, it discusses Bishop Ginés de Barrientos’s (1681–1698) political unrest against the cabildo members, which demonstrate that disobedience was not the exception but the everyday rule. To reconstruct social fields set in motion in early modern Manila, this case study opens up a new conflict-ridden paradigm of religious division that stresses competition, contentiousness, and factionalism in the cathedral body.KEYWORDS: CATHEDRAL CHAPTER …

A Matter Of Grave Concern: Burial Sites And Funeral Rites In The Nineteenth-Century Philippines, Xavier; Department Huetz De Lemps
Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints
Thisarticle seeks to describe the colonial cemetery in the Philippines at the turn of the eighteenth and the nineteenth century in four material dimensions: location, spatial planning, ethnic and social differentiation, and economical importance for the parish. From 1804 onward, colonial attempts to regulate burial practices centered on the spatial relocation of the deceased. Closely correlated with the cholera outbreaks in the Philippines, the growing pressure exerted by colonial authorities on burial practices gave rise to a complex mix of political, social, and ethnic tensions that both reflected the enormous complexity of colonial society and contributed to recompose it.KEYWORDS: CATHOLIC …

Circuits Broken, Remade, And Newly Forged: Tracing Southeast Asia's Foreign Relations After The Vietnam War, Wen-Qing Ngoei
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
This article (2021) in Diplomatic History's pandemic feature examines how the principles and consequences of Singapore's "circuit breaker" policy offers a conceptual framework for studying the history of Southeast Asia's foreign relations in the 1970s to 1990s. With this approach, the essay considers how a study of Southeast Asia's culture-makers (artists, writers, dramatists), their works and transnational circuits, may open a productive inquiry into a diverse array of regionalisms that compete and complement ASEAN.

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
The author discussed about the foremost geopolitical challenge China is facing as the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) marks its centenary on July 1. He pointed out that bilateral ties between US and China are patently lacking in trust, but believes both can find convergence and achieve mutual respect if determined efforts are channelled towards policies, institutions, norms, and cooperation that seek to incrementally enhance security and cooperation for both countries even as they robustly engage each other on the issues.

Authoritarian Values And Political Identities In Turkey, Murat Abus
Student Theses and Dissertations
The widespread experience of democratic decline in both established democracies and hybrid regimes formed one of the main branches of the study of comparative democratization in the last decade. This study is a step in the direction of uncovering the factors associated with a possible wider framework that drives democratic decline. The specific question of interest relates to the determinants of support for non-democratic policies at the electorate level. The design is a single-country study focusing on Turkey which has experienced significant autocratization. Nationally representative survey data from Turkey is utilized to investigate the forces at work and there is …

“We Planted Rice And Killed People:” Symbiogenetic Destruction In The Cambodian Genocide, Andrew Woolford, Wanda June, Sereyvothny Um
Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal
In recent years, genocide scholars have given greater attention to the dangers posed by climate change for increasing the prevalence or intensity of genocide. Challenges related to forced migration, resource scarcity, famine, and other threats of the Anthropocene are identified as sources of present and future risk, especially for those committed to genocide prevention. We approach the connection between the natural and social aspects of genocide from a different angle. Our research emanates out of a North American Indigenous studies and new materialist rather than Euro-genocide studies framework, meaning we see the natural and the social (or cultural) as inseparable, …

The Impact Of Religious Beliefs, Practices, And Social Networks On Rwandan Rescue Efforts During Genocide, Nicole Fox, Hollie Nyseth Brehm, John Gasana Gasasira
Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal
In April 1994, in one of the most Christian nations in Africa, genocidal violence erupted culminating in the deaths of upwards of one million people. While thousands participated in mass killings, others choose not to, and rescued persecuted individuals instead. Relying on 45 in-depth interviews with individuals who rescued others in Rwanda, we demonstrate that religion is tied to rescue efforts in at least three ways: 1) through the creation of cognitive safety nets that enabled high-risk actions; 2) through religious practices that isolated individuals from the social networks of those committing the violence; and 3) through religious social networks …

The Healing Of Historical Collective Trauma, Eugen Koh
The Healing Of Historical Collective Trauma, Eugen Koh
Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal
Historical collective trauma is embedded in the shared consciousness of a collective, which can be considered as being the collective’s culture. The healing of historical collective trauma is a most complex and challenging task. At the core of it is a collective process of working through painful and overwhelming experiences, which is only possible in a safe and supportive environment. This process involves remembering and making sense of defined events and depends on the possession of a capable and authentic “collective thinking apparatus,” which is proposed here, to be a function of a collective’s culture. The healing of single, …

Dossier: Uyghur Women In China’S Genocide, Rukiye Turdush, Magnus Fiskesjö
Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal
In genocide, both women and men suffer. However, their suffering has always been different; with men mostly subjected to torture and killings, and women mostly subjected to torture and mutilation. These differences stem primarily from the perpetrators' ideology and intention to exterminate the targeted people. Many patriarchal societies link men with blood lineage and the group’s continuation, while women embody the group’s reproductivity and dignity. In the ongoing genocide against the Uyghurs and other Turkic Muslims in East Turkistan, the ideology of Chinese colonialism is a root cause. It motivates the targeting of women as the means through which to …

Book Review: Remembrance And Forgiveness: Global And Interdisciplinary Perspectives On Genocide And Mass Violence, Amina Hadžiomerović

The volume Remembrance and Forgiveness, edited by Ajlina Karamehić-Muratović and Laura Kromják, brings together a diversity of disciplines, authors, and cultural contexts to discuss the legacies of the post-Holocaust era genocides by focusing on the (de)mobilisation of memory in seeking truth, justice, and forgiveness. The book provides a compendious overview of the social, historical, and political contexts behind the insurgencies and gives a better sense of understanding of (the obstacles to) the healing process and reconciliation in the global frame.

Art As Atrocity Prevention: The Auschwitz Institute, Artivism, And The 2019 Venice Biennale, Kaitlin Murphy
Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal
Although largely overlooked in genocide and atrocity prevention scholarship, the arts have a critical role to play in mitigating risk factors associated with genocide and atrocity. Grounded in analysis of "Artivism: The Atrocity Prevention Pavilion,” the Auschwitz Institute for the Prevention of Genocide and Mass Atrocities’ 2019 Venice Biennale exhibition and drawing from fieldwork, interviews, and secondary research, this article explores why one of the leading NGOs working to prevent future violent conflict would choose to curate an art exhibit at the Venice Biennale and what might be accomplished through such an exhibit. Ultimately, the Artivism exhibit, in its collection …

Village Work : Development And Rural Statecraft In Twentieth-Century Ghana, Alice Wiemers
Village Work : Development And Rural Statecraft In Twentieth-Century Ghana, Alice Wiemers
Ohio University Press Open Access Books
A robust historical case study that demonstrates how village development became central to the rhetoric and practice of statecraft in rural Ghana
Combining oral histories with decades of archival material, Village Work formulates a sweeping history of twentieth-century statecraft that centers on the daily work of rural people, local officials, and family networks, rather than on the national governments and large-scale plans that often dominate development stories. Wiemers shows that developmentalism was not simply created by governments and imposed on the governed; instead, it was jointly constructed through interactions between them.
The book contributes to the historiographies of development and …

While the comfort women issue is often framed within contested relations between the victims and the perpetrators, such as South Korean survivors and/or South Korea’s relationship with Japan, Jenna Shin’s essay, “A Comfort Women Redress Movement without Comfort Women,” shifts her reader’s attention to the relationship between the surviving comfort women and their main advocacy group, the …

Mcrage Against The Machine: Cultural Expansion And Anti-State Demonstrations In The Mena Region, Joel R. Deere
Student Theses and Dissertations
Globalization has been argued by scholars to be a facilitating force for development and economic growth. Others point to how globalization may lead to demobilization and atomization. In an ever-increasing globalized world, formerly closed off societies are now coming into contact with ideas, beliefs, customs, and products like no other time in History. I seek to examine the clash of centuries old-traditional cultures within the Middle East and North Africa and the encroaching dominance of Western Consumer-Culture spurred by the Globalization process. Particularly in how it relates to political unrest in the form of Anti-State Demonstrations. I find that the …

This article represents some inquiries about Mohamed Dahman’s book entitled: Nomadic and stability. The researcher believes what motivated the author to write about this issue is the lackof studies that address the issue of sociology in the Sahraoui context. Therefore, this book is mainly about two eras; the pre- Spanish colonial period, 2- the period of stability and the occurrence of the social, legal institutions. Aatouf tried to analyze the content of the chapters of the book. He titled the first chapter as: Nomadic, as a life style. Dahman, in this chapter, tried to analyze the different types of Bedouins …

The discussion about territorial integrity through what is raised by the relations between the Moroccan metropolises and their desert expanses from a scientific, cognitive and intellectual aspect is a unified talk. The latter is due to the strong bonds that unite Moroccan with their surroundings, whether Sahrawi or otherwise, throughout history which evidently confirms that they were deeply aware of the significance of what these bonds build thanks to scholars and their great knowledge. The relations between the Sahara and the rest of the Morocco’s regions also provide and allow a great possibility for the expansion of the flag. Therefore, …
