Increasing Access To Potable Water: A Question Of Economics And Governance In Bo District, Sierra Leone, Alissa M. Heiring
Increasing Access To Potable Water: A Question Of Economics And Governance In Bo District, Sierra Leone, Alissa M. Heiring
Lawrence University Honors Projects
This paper analyzes existing supply gaps that are impeding rural water access in Bo District, Sierra Leone. On a national and district level, Sierra Leone has failed to meet the target of 70% access to potable water inspired by the United Nation’s Millennium Development Goals. This paper focuses on Bo District due to its near total inclusion in the Sewa River basin and split urban and rural population. Given the existing political and economic constraints, this paper identifies the most feasible way to sustainably increase access to potable water in Bo. To develop the recommendations, current supply gaps in rural …
Syllabus: Sustainable Living: Solutions For The 21st Century, Laurie Simmons
Syllabus: Sustainable Living: Solutions For The 21st Century, Laurie Simmons
Sustainability Education Resources
Your generation has been handed an opportunity: the opportunity to change the story of our culture from one of blind consumption to one of conscious ecological living. As individuals, as a society and as a species, we are facing challenges related to sustainability including economic stability, social justice, resource depletion and waste management, biodiversity preservation, climate adaptation and food and agricultural resilience. In this interdisciplinary course you will learn how to seize this opportunity by working with your peers to research and understand how sustainability in different contexts presents solutions to many of these challenges facing modern society. “Sustainable Living” …
The State Of Sachets: Ghana’S Private Sector Solution To A Public Infrastructure Problem, Robert J. Little
The State Of Sachets: Ghana’S Private Sector Solution To A Public Infrastructure Problem, Robert J. Little
Pitzer Senior Theses
Known colloquially as “purewater”, sachet water has outcompeted all alternatives to Ghana’s unreliable government water infrastructure and serves as the cheap, portable, omnipresent solution for narrowing the safe water access gap. Each single-use sachet holds 500 ml of filtered potable water and is heat-sealed in a high-density polyethylene bag. Insufficient and often skeptical scholarship exists surrounding the state of sachet water in Ghana, and almost no research incorporates qualitative data into analysis and future recommendations. In the face of incomplete and decontextualized research on sachet water, this study aims to use qualitative data concerning Ghanaian viewpoints to showcase the …
Coastal Environmental Policies And Water: Environmental Values In Ghana And Senegal, Molly R. Loftus
Coastal Environmental Policies And Water: Environmental Values In Ghana And Senegal, Molly R. Loftus
CMC Senior Theses
This thesis provides a comparative analysis of the environmental values present in Ghana’s and Senegal’s coastal regions, and the implications that those have for the surrounding environment. The countries approaches to urban farming, mining and oil and gas extraction, fishing, marine debris and municipal waste management are assessed in order to reach a greater understanding of these environmental issues. In undertaking this thesis, I attempted to draw a correlation between the handling of these issues and how people perceive their environment. Through the comparison of environmental degradation and the level of effort to achieve a more sustainable developmental framework in …

Comparative Risk Assessment And Alternative Closure Techniques Of Abandoned Manure Storage Basins In Central Minnesota, Joe Storlien
Comparative Risk Assessment And Alternative Closure Techniques Of Abandoned Manure Storage Basins In Central Minnesota, Joe Storlien
Culminating Projects in Environmental and Technological Studies
Manure storage basins are a necessary component to many animal agriculture production systems. Manures within these basins are a valuable source of nutrients for crops, however they must be managed appropriately to protect water resources. Some contaminants found within animal manures may pose potential human or environmental health risks.
The objectives of this study were to: 1) determine characteristics of eight sites containing abandoned manure storage basins; 2) quantify contaminant concentration in soil and groundwater at the abandoned basin sites; 3) quantify the comparative risk posed by the abandoned basins; 4) determine overall comparative risk posed by the abandoned manure …
Sustainability Of Least Cost Policies For Meeting Mexico City's Future Water Demand, Timothy Downs, Marisa Mazari-Hiriart, Ramón Domínguez-Mora, Irwin Suffet
Sustainability Of Least Cost Policies For Meeting Mexico City's Future Water Demand, Timothy Downs, Marisa Mazari-Hiriart, Ramón Domínguez-Mora, Irwin Suffet
Sustainability and Social Justice
Meeting future water demand without degrading ecosystems is one important indicator of sustainable development. Using simulations, we showed that compared to existing policy, more sustainable water supply options are similar or cheaper in cost. We probabilistically forecasted the Mexico City metropolitan zone population for the year 2015 to be 23.5 million and total required water supply to be 106 m3 s-1. We optimized existing and potential supply sources from aquifers, surface water, treatment/reuse, and efficiency/demand management by cost to meet future supply needs; the applied source supply limits determined the degree of sustainability. In two scenarios to supply 106 m3 …

Van Duzen Basin Study: Historical Research On Houses In Hydesville-Carlotta Area, Susie Van Kirk
Susie Van Kirk Papers
This paper is an edited version of two separate reports. This report, Van Duzen Basin Atlas, California State Department of Water Resources and the County of Humboldt, was prepared under the direction of Don Tuttle, Resources Analyst for Humboldt County (listed as "Van Duzen Basin Study: Historical Research on Houses in Hydesville-Carlotta Area"). The second report, Van Duzen Management Plan, California Department of fish and Game, was directed by Environmental Research Consultants, Inc., Arcata (listed as "Historical Survey of Van Duzen River Basin").
