Cap-And-Trade Modeling And Analysis For Electric Power Generation Systems, Patricio Rocha
Cap-And-Trade Modeling And Analysis For Electric Power Generation Systems, Patricio Rocha
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Cap-and-trade is the most discussed CO2 emissions control scheme in the U.S. It is a market-based mechanism that has been used previously to successfully reduce the levels of SO2 and NOx emitted by power generators. Since electricity generators are responsible for about 40% of the CO2 emissions in the U.S., the implementation of CO2 cap-and-trade will have a significant impact on electric power generation systems. In particular, cap-and-trade will influence the investment decisions made by power generators. These decisions in turn, will affect electricity prices and demand. If the allowances (or emission permits) created by …
A Discrete-Continuous Modeling Framework For Long-Distance, Leisure Travel Demand Analysis, Caleb Van Nostrand
A Discrete-Continuous Modeling Framework For Long-Distance, Leisure Travel Demand Analysis, Caleb Van Nostrand
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study contributes to the literature on national long-distance travel demand modeling by providing an analysis of households' annual destination choices and time allocation patterns for long-distance leisure travel purposes. An annual vacation destination choice and time allocation model is formulated to simultaneously predict the different destinations that a household visits and the time it spends on each of these visited destinations, in a year. The model takes the form of a Multiple Discrete-Continuous Extreme Value (MDCEV) structure (Bhat, 2005; Bhat, 2008). The model assumes that households allocate their annual vacation time to visit one or more destinations in a …

Safety Is Everywhere-The Constituents Of Maritime Safety, Gesa Praetorius, Margareta Lützhöft
Safety Is Everywhere-The Constituents Of Maritime Safety, Gesa Praetorius, Margareta Lützhöft
Gesa Praetorius
Although maritime safety is one of the key terms in regulation, guidelines and recommendations, such as SOLAS (International Convention for the safety of life at sea (IMO, 1974), in the shipping domain, there is, to the best of our knowledge, neither an explanation of this specific type of safety nor any explicit understanding on how it is promoted by those who work on board of merchant vessel. This qualitative study approaches maritime safety from a crew perspective and discusses what constituents should be considered to be part of maritime safety.

Finding An Optimal Path: Highways Versus Local Roads, Gabriel Leiner
Finding An Optimal Path: Highways Versus Local Roads, Gabriel Leiner
Gabriel Leiner
Commuters across the United States are often presented with the dilemma of whether to wait at an onramp to get on a highway or look for short-cuts on local roads. An answer to this question may lie in the use of Dedicated Short Range Communication (DSRC) wireless technology. With the touch of a button, connected vehicle technology could allow drivers to access real time information about the sizes and speeds of queues at highway onramps, as well as the signal phases of traffic lights on local roads. In the future, drivers could rely on this information to make valid judgments …

The Use Of Environmental, Health And Safety Research In Nanotechnology Research, Jan Youtie, Alan Porter, Philip Shapira, Li Tang, Troy Benn
Li Tang
Environmental, health, and safety (EHS) concerns are receiving considerable attention in nanoscience and nanotechnology (nano) research and development (R&D). Policymakers and others have urged that research on nano's EHS implications be developed alongside scientific research in the nano domain rather than subsequent to applications. This concurrent perspective suggests the importance of early understanding and measurement of the diffusion of nano EHS research. The paper examines the diffusion of nano EHS publications, defined through a set of search terms, into the broader nano domain using a global nanotechnology R&D database developed at Georgia Tech. The results indicate that nano EHS research …
