The Effects Of An Innovative Curriculum On The Attitudes Of "Educationally Disadvantaged" Freshman College Students, Julius William Wilkerson

Educational research literature suggests the expectations for success in college for youth from "educationally disadvantaged" backgrounds are tragically small. Reasons offered for this have included the lack of requisite academic preparation, lack of motivation, lack of appreciation for the value of a college education. The general purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of an innovative instructional technique in promoting the development of positive attitudes about self-worth, and academic achievement, for "disadvantaged" students. That students are role-oriented while many schools are still goal-oriented has been demonstrated in this project. Many educators (Goldhammer & Heilman, 1973; Glasser, 1970; Goodlad, 1975; Hansen, 1975; Mink, 1975; and Tyler, 1972) emphasize the importance of students finding their identity and a sense of belongingness. Hoyt (1974), Marland (1971) (1972), and Goldhammer et. al. (1973) see work as an important element in helping youth find a meaningful role for himself in his community.
