Winona Campus Life was a weekly laboratory newspaper produced by the WSU Mass Communciation Department students and printed as a supplement to the Sunday Winona Daily News, which began in September 1983. The newspaper provided coverage of the four institutions of higher education in Winona: Winona State University, St. Mary's University, College of Saint Teresa, and Winona Area Vocational-Technical School. It was created to provide a place for Mass Communcation students to publish their articles and photographs with the idea of generating reader feedback, which is essential in journalism education.

The Relationship Among Parent Knowledge Of Special Education, Assertiveness, And Participation In Planning Their Handicapped Child’S Educational Program, Lynne Faxon Croxton

This study addressed the relationship among parent assertiveness, parent knowledge of special education and the handicapping condition of their child, and parent participation in the annual meeting of the School-Based Admissions and Release Committee (SBARC). Fifty-one (51) parents of learning disabled and mentally handicapped children in a suburban area of Kentucky participated in the study. The effects of the child’s handicapping condition and the number of years the child’s handicapping condition and the number of years the child had received special education on parent assertiveness, knowledge, and participation were also analyzed. Effects Of Two Instructional Sets On The Validity Of The Kaufman Assessment Battery For Children -- Non-Verbal Scale With A Group Of Severely Hearing Impaired Children, Larry James Porter

The purpose of the study was to investigate the applicability and appropriateness of the Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children (K-ABC)--Non-Verbal Scale for assessing intellectual functioning in severely hearing impaired children. The Non-verbal K-ABC was administered to 49 children ages 7 through 12 years enrolled at a public residential school for the deaf. Test instructions were given to one group of 24 employing American sign language (ASL), plus pantomime and gestures while the other group of 25 received pantomime and gesture (PG) instructions only. It was hypothesized that the ASL group would score significantly higher than the PG group. However, no …

Top Third/Bottom Third: A Humane Approach To Merit Pay For Academic Departments, John E. Crawford, Robert O. Hirsch, Carol A. Valentine

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article examines a merit pay model for academic departments designed to reduce anxiety, competition, and perceived unfairness in faculty salary adjustment processes. It describes a three tier system that combines a general salary increase with differentiated merit awards for faculty ranked in upper, middle, and lower performance groups. The article addresses how departments may define valued faculty activity through explicit criteria for teaching, research, publication, and service, while also preserving attention to equity, rank, and length of service. It presents the model as a way to reward exceptional contributions without denying recognition to competent faculty members. The article situates …
