Community Based Research
This project was undertaken as a result of conversations initiated by members of the Spartanburg Academic Movement (SAM) about the desirability of qualitative data to contextualize quantitative data generated by the use of a validated national instrument in Spartanburg County Schools. SAM is a nonprofit and community movement that facilitates the discussion of shared information and intentional, collaborative, and strategic work by cross-sector partnerships in order to foster high levels of academic attainment for all children in Spartanburg County. The Understanding Of A Single Story: Identities Amongst Black Students At Predominately White Institutions, Jonathan A. Franklin

This paper examines the structure of identities amongst Black students at predominately white institutions – particularly focusing on Wofford College. Extensive focus groups were conducted with members of the Black student body to further progress research. Racism regarding Black students and their social identity in addition to how it has structured the social identity amongst students are introduced in along with the identities of students on Wofford’s campus. Discrimination on campus has had the effect of narrowing Black students’ options for creating social identity and participating in campus community life. Libraries are underutilized resources available to high school teachers. Our team set out with the goal to bring more students into the library by designing a set of “units” for which teachers could bring classes into the library. Each unit addresses Common Core Standards while simultaneously teaching a valuable skill or specific lesson. We wanted these lessons to be applicable to students, include a form of genuine assessment, while also helping teachers transition to the Common Core standards. These units are designed to be taught by librarians, but to teach skills/lessons that teachers would in their own classroom.

This AVD project will focus on the development of student-centered learning activities and instructional strategies for a secondary government and economics teacher, Mary Ford, at Southside High School in Greenville, SC. The materials were created to provide more opportunity for students to be involved in their own learning process, analyze primary sources, and participate in self-guided learning in an effort for Government and Economics to be understood by students with varying interests and learning styles.
