Communication Curriculum Reform, Liberal Arts Components And Administrative Organization, Keith L. Williamson, Sharon Hartin Iorio
Communication Curriculum Reform, Liberal Arts Components And Administrative Organization, Keith L. Williamson, Sharon Hartin Iorio
Journal of the Association for Communication Administration
This article investigates the substance and level of importance placed on liberal arts as elements within the communication curriculum and whether the definition and significance of these liberal arts elements change according to the emphasis of different communication programs. To explore the nature and extent of the curriculum, the article reviewed communication programs through a survey of the membership of two organizations, the Association of Communication Administrators and the Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass Communication. Prior to the analysis of the findings, academic literature are reviewed to provide a discussion of the history surrounding the organization, curricula, and …
"Classical 'Tenure Trek': In The Search For New Academic Frontiers, 'Don't Lower The Bridge, Raise The Water'", Gerald Lee Ratliff
"Classical 'Tenure Trek': In The Search For New Academic Frontiers, 'Don't Lower The Bridge, Raise The Water'", Gerald Lee Ratliff
Journal of the Association for Communication Administration
This article evaluates the conditions related to a similar classical quest for academic tenure and examines the primary strategies that may be involved in enriching the traditional educational relics of teaching, research, scholarship and service. Any basic, honest blueprint for tenure clearly demands a visionary pre-hiring faculty selection committee that understands the significant investment indicated by an advertisement for a tenure track appointment. After a basic tenure-trek blueprint has been drawn, perhaps the vision of academic and professional expectations may be more clearly detailed by some illustrations that suggest effective strategies for achieving tenure goals and objectives.
The Juggling Act Female Administrators Perform Between Their Professional And Nonprofessional Lives, Betsy Taylor Roesch
The Juggling Act Female Administrators Perform Between Their Professional And Nonprofessional Lives, Betsy Taylor Roesch
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
The purpose of this study was to examine how full-time female college administrators juggle the responsibilities in their professional lives with those of their nonprofessional lives.;A total of thirty female administrators were selected from both private and public four-year institutions in eastern Virginia. Snowball sampling was used to identify the women who met the criteria of the study. The women were all full-time college administrators who had at least one child still living at home and at least one living parent. They were all members of the "sandwich generation". One-third of the women were African American.;Information on each woman was …

The Tacit Dimension Of Organizational Learning, Thomas Reeder Robinson
The Tacit Dimension Of Organizational Learning, Thomas Reeder Robinson
Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations
This research was conducted to observe the self-reflections of an organizational participant group to further understand the organizational learning phenomenon. The participant group consisted of the 15 managers, spanning three levels of management, of a large engineering group in the southeastern United States.
The intent of the research was to generate theory, rather than to test theory. To accomplish this objective, a qualitative research methodology in a participatory action framework was modeled from Keating's (1993) Organizational Learning Process (OLP) to co-construct participants' organizational reflections. The methodology included individual interviews designed to elicit spontaneity that co-generated organizational perspectives. These perspectives were …
The Relationship Between A Pre-Departure Training Program And Its Participants' Intercultural Communication Competence, Daniel Timothy Ferguson
The Relationship Between A Pre-Departure Training Program And Its Participants' Intercultural Communication Competence, Daniel Timothy Ferguson
Dissertations and Theses
Self-reported behaviorally-based intercultural communication competence inventories are one way to understand the relationship between a pre-departure training program and its participants' intercultural communication competence (ICC). One such inventory, called the Cross- Cultural Adaptability Inventory (CCAI), was chosen to explore this relationship.
This research sought to confirm or reject the following three hypotheses: 1) experimental subjects will demonstrate higher levels of ICC than control subjects, 2) experimental subjects will demonstrate higher levels of ICC after they take the pre-departure class at Walla Walla College, and 3) there will be relationships among all subjects' ICC and the demographic variables involved in this …

The Midwife Vrs The Vroedvrouw-The Troubled History Of Midwifery In The United States As Compared To The Stability Of Midwifery In The Netherlands., Kathleen A. Strub-Richards
Kathleen A Strub-Richards
The struggle for midwifery has been a long and arduous journey in the United States. Even today it is only legally recognized in sixteen states. This is a major contrast between the midwives in the Netherlands who have had complete autonomy over normal births since early in the 19th century. I am very interested in the history of midwifery in these two separate countries since I gave birth to a baby in Amsterdam and am about to give birth to one here in the United States. I plan to trace the history of midwifery in both the USA and Holland …

Overcoming Men's Defensiveness Toward Sexual Assault Programs: Learning To Help Survivors., John D. Foubert, Kenneth A. Marriott
John D. Foubert
A unique new approach to overcoming men's defensiveness toward sexual assault prevention programs is described. By appealing to audience members as potential helpers of women who survive rape as opposed to addressing them as potential rapists, programmatic goals can be achieved.
Coming Out Of The Closet: Young Gay Men's Experiences In The Process Of Coming Out, Ronald Macdonald
Coming Out Of The Closet: Young Gay Men's Experiences In The Process Of Coming Out, Ronald Macdonald
Dr. Ronald Macdonald
Coming out of the closet is a decision that all young gay men consider, however there has been little recent research undertaken which investigates this phenomenon.
The purpose of this qualitative study is to provide an account of young men’s experiences in the process of coming out and a critical analysis of the influences of cultural, political and social factors which impinge on the process. A phenomenological method (utilising Colaizzi’s procedural steps) will be employed to collect data and to extrapolate common themes and meanings. A purposeful sample of seven young gay men were interviewed. Data was collected from taped …

Addressing Equity In Alberta, John R. Fisher, Moshe Elhav
Addressing Equity In Alberta, John R. Fisher, Moshe Elhav
Dr. John R. Fisher
This paper provides a historical review of equity in funding education in Alberta. It describes government attempts to address fiscal inequities and shows how the introduction of full funding in 1994 addressed many of the equity problems in Alberta. Horizontal equity has improved. However, the province needs to consider ways to improve vertical equity--the need for different amounts of funding to meet different needs--and other inequities affecting student achievement and access to knowledge.
