Does Strategic Planning Help Churches?: An Exploratory Study, Amit J. Shah, Fred R. David, Zigmont J. Surawski Iii
The Coastal Business Journal
Many organizations in both the profit and not-for-profit arenas have discovered the benefits of strategic planning. An increasing number of churches and ministries are applying the principles of strategic planning (Clinton, Williams, & Stevens, 1995). In the 1990s, organizations including churches…are playing "Jeopardy" if they do not have strategic plans in place (Maes, 1998). This research examines to what extent strategic planning is being used among churches. Data was gathered through distribution of a survey mailed to churches in South Carolina. The pastor of each church personally completed the survey and returned it via e-mail, postal service, or fax. Initial …

Experiences And Challenges In Taking A Print Journal On-Line, Robert D. Nale, Robert B. Burney
The Coastal Business Journal
For a number of years, an annual publication of the Wall College of Business at Coastal Carolina University (The Coastal Business Review and later, Journal) was produced in standard print form. Because of increasing budgetary concerns experienced by the University and the State of South Carolina, the cost of printing the journal in the traditional fashion became increasingly prohibitive. When publishing deadlines were missed, several avenues were explored regarding how the College could deal with the problem. While unique for an institution of this size, the creation of a totally on-line journal began to assert itself as a viable option. …

Benchmarking: Understanding The Basics, William M. Lankford
Benchmarking: Understanding The Basics, William M. Lankford
The Coastal Business Journal
It is often stated that those who benchmark do not have to reinvent the wheel (Parker, 1996). By following others one can make improvements and not focus on stale ideas. Benchmarking at first glance may be mistaken for a copycat form of developing strategic plans and for making improvements within an organization. This is not true. Benchmarking is a process that allows organizations to improve upon existing ideas. In order to eliminate myths and misconceptions about benchmarking it is important to know exactly what benchmarking is, the different types of benchmarking, the criticisms of benchmarking, and the ethical practices concerning …

Growth, Bullfrogs, And Small Businesses, Leanne C. Mcgrath
The Coastal Business Journal
Small business owners are always striving to grow the business in pursuit of success. The question of how to make that happen is the paramount issue. Spotlighting key areas related to sustained, rapid growth and its consequences, both good and bad, is especially essential for small businesses who rarely have much of a financial cushion. Do all small business owners want to have extended, high growth periods? If so, what problems are associated with such accelerated growth? How can small business owners grow successfully, guarding against many common pitfalls?
The Economics Of Corruption In Developing Countries, Ramchandra Akkihal, Harlan M. Smith Ii, Roger Adkins
The Economics Of Corruption In Developing Countries, Ramchandra Akkihal, Harlan M. Smith Ii, Roger Adkins
The Coastal Business Journal
Official corruption, unfortunately, is endemic in the developing world. One factor in the spread of this illegal activity has been the propensity of developing-country governments to intervene heavily in their economies, often in the attempt to guide, direct, and control economic activity in order to promote the desired pace and style of economic development. Such regulatory efforts, though now on the wane in much of the developing world, continue to generate opportunities in many countries for bureaucrats in control of scarce resources to allocate them on a non-market basis, to further their own economic, political, and social prospects.

Casinos, Lotteries, And Markets, Ramchandra Akkihal, Suneel Maheshwari, Roger Adkins
The Coastal Business Journal
Gambling activities of casinos, lotteries and other forms are becoming increasingly acceptable to society. Also, the media and the public are increasingly referring to economically essential market-risk management activities like trading in derivatives as gambling. This paper attempts to distinguish between these two types of activities and maintains that unlike gambling in casinos and lotteries, the market-risk management activities add value to the economy and are essential to the efficient working of production and distribution functions of the economy.

The number of golf courses in the Myrtle Beach area is constantly changing. So too, are the number of new residents who decide to buy or build homes or condominiums near these golf courses. This thesis explores the utilization of golf courses by residents of the particular golf course community. Primary research is performed and analyzed concerning four Myrtle Beach area golf course communities. The study shows that primary home ownership, retirement, membership of the golf course, and prestige of the golf course are all positively associated with usage of the golf course. The results of the study may be …
The Effect Of Golf Course Location On Housing Value, Jeffrey J. Pompe, James R. Rinehart
The Effect Of Golf Course Location On Housing Value, Jeffrey J. Pompe, James R. Rinehart
The Coastal Business Journal
Structural and locational characteristics are known to affect housing prices, and numerous studies have explored many of these characteristics. However very little empirical information was available on the effect of golf course location for improved property. Two recent studies find that building on a golf course adds 7 to 8 percent to the value of property. However, we find that for a private development on a barrier island, building a villa or single family home on a golf course does not have any significant impact on price. Specific locational factors may explain this unexpected result.

Laboratory Experiments Of Land Assembly Without Eminent Domain, Mark Desantis, Matthew W. Mccarter, Abel Winn
Laboratory Experiments Of Land Assembly Without Eminent Domain, Mark Desantis, Matthew W. Mccarter, Abel Winn
ESI Publications
The authors use laboratory experiments to test two self-assessment tax mechanisms for facilitating land assembly. One mechanism is incentive compatible with a complex tax function, while the other uses a flat tax rate to mitigate implementation concerns. Sellers publicly declare a price for their land. Overstating its true value is penalized by using the declared price to assess a property tax; understating its value is penalized by allowing developers to buy the property at the declared price. The authors find that both mechanisms increase the rate of land assembly and gains from trade relative to a control in which sellers’ …

East Asia’S Inclusive Growth Model : Part – I, Ishrat Husain Dr.
Faculty Research - Newspaper and Magazine Articles
Almost thirty years ago the World Bank produced a seminal report, ‘The East Asia Miracle’, which captured the essence of the success stories of eight economies in East Asia (Japan; the four tigers – Hong Kong, Singapore, Korea, Taiwan; and three Asean countries – Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand). These high-performing economies grew three times as fast as Latin America and South Asia and five times faster than Sub Saharan Africa between 1965 and 1990. During the 1990s, the high growth momentum was sustained, and these economies grew at average 8 percent per annum. Their share in world trade expanded at …

Nebraska Monthly Economic Indicators: February 23, 2022, Eric Thompson
Leading Economic Indicator Reports
The LEI-N rose by 0.58% during January 2022. The increase in the leading indicator, which is designed to predict economic activity six months in the future, signals moderate economic growth in Nebraska through the summer of 2022. The indicator improved for three primary reasons. There were positive business expectations in January according to respondents to the monthly Survey of Nebraska Business. Initial claims for unemployment insurance also fell during the month as a sign of strength for the labor market. The value of the U.S. dollar also fell, which is helpful for Nebraska businesses that compete in international markets.
Lost Grounds In Us Trade Integration, John C. Beghin
Lost Grounds In Us Trade Integration, John C. Beghin
Cornhusker Economics
Growing World Trade Organization (WTO) membership and plurilateral trade agreements have increasingly occurred in the last 20 years leading to unprecedented market integration. However, in the last 5 years, the United States (US) has been diverging from its traditional role as a main driver of this integration. In contrast, Europe has been integrated progressively within itself and beyond, outpacing the US. The article documents these trends and changes. This article is based on a longer working paper and an article in EuroChoices coauthored with Jill O’Donnell.
Is Selling Complete Information (Approximately) Optimal?, Dirk Bergemann, Yang Cai, Grigoris Velegkas, Mingfei Zhao
Is Selling Complete Information (Approximately) Optimal?, Dirk Bergemann, Yang Cai, Grigoris Velegkas, Mingfei Zhao
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
We study the problem of selling information to a data-buyer who faces a decision problem under uncertainty. We consider the classic Bayesian decision-theoretic model pioneered by Blackwell [Bla51, Bla53]. Initially, the data buyer has only partial information about the payoff-relevant state of the world. A data seller offers additional information about the state of the world. The information is revealed through signaling schemes, also referred to as experiments. In the single-agent setting, any mechanism can be represented as a menu of experiments. A recent paper by Bergemann et al. [BBS18] present a complete characterization of the revenue-optimal mechanism in a …

Reforms: Institutional Impediments : Part - Iii, Ishrat Husain Dr.
Faculty Research - Newspaper and Magazine Articles
The reason for the kind of political behaviour exhibited by elected representatives has to do with the incentive structure under the present voting system. MNAs and MPAs owe their election to constituency politics. They are obligated to take actions which keep their constituents pleased and their opponents subdued. That means that prices of essential commodities, tariffs charged for electricity, gas, water, railways are frozen and controlled through administrative means (whatever the government has to cough up to bear the subsidies involved) so that people don’t complain about rising prices. They would like the government to create new jobs to take …

Stuck In The Middle: An Analysis Of Economic Growth And The Technological Intensity Of Exports, Aya Abdel Halim
Theses and Dissertations
Driven by the persistence of some economies’ lower-middle-income status, also known as the middle-income trap, this research aims to identify the relationship between exports and their growth rates. A Cobb-Douglass model augmented by the different types of exports is employed, and the relationship is estimated for a panel of 77 lower-middle-income economies using multiple two-step system Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) model. This research’s contribution to the literature is two-fold: First, it analyzes exports from both an aggregated level (i.e., total exports) as well as at a disaggregated level by the technological intensity of exports. To add, the panel of …
Financial Inclusion And Monetary Policy - Investigating The Relationship Between Financial Inclusion And Monetary Policy: The Case Of Egypt, Salma Maher
Theses and Dissertations
In the past decade, financial inclusion has become an issue of increasing importance to developing nations. This is due to its perceived effects on poverty alleviation, sustainable growth and enhancing monetary policy effectiveness. Unfortunately, there is little empirical research on the effects of financial inclusion. The thesis hopes to contribute to the literature by inspecting the relationship between financial utilization indices and monetary policy in Egypt. The thesis utilizes quarterly data on outstanding deposits and loans from 2004 to 2020 as well as a VAR model – supplemented with an ARDL model – to test the aforementioned relationship. The thesis …

Why Aren’T People Leaving Janesville? Industry Persistence, Trade Shocks, And Mobility, Sebastian Ottinger, Michael Poyker
Why Aren’T People Leaving Janesville? Industry Persistence, Trade Shocks, And Mobility, Sebastian Ottinger, Michael Poyker
Upjohn Institute Working Papers
Particular industries have dominated many locations in the United States for more than a century. We show that individuals residing in such locations were systematically less likely to move away from there during the past few decades. By identifying locations with sizable employment shares in the same manufacturing industries in 1870 and 1980, we documented less out-migration in the decades following 1980 than earlier. In response to the largest shock affecting manufacturing employment since then, these locations adjusted differently: the “China shock” led to higher unemployment in their communities, but fewer people moved away. Drawing on rich data of social …
Regenerative Tourism Model: Challenges Of Adapting Concepts From Natural Science To Tourism Industry, Asif Hussain, Marie Haley
Regenerative Tourism Model: Challenges Of Adapting Concepts From Natural Science To Tourism Industry, Asif Hussain, Marie Haley
Journal of Sustainability and Resilience
The study proposes a regenerative tourism model. The application of the natural science ideas of regeneration needs to be clarified before the tourism industry can adopt a regenerative tourism model. Without such clarification, there is a high risk of ‘green washing’ and inappropriate adaption of a regenerative model. The borrowing of natural science to industry and its application in social sciences confuse the essence of the true concept of regeneration. In a regenerative agriculture context restoring a holistic system that mimics nature and includes social and economic spheres contributes to improving the whole system. When a social system aims to …

Global urban populations are projected to increase by 2.5 billion over the next 30 years. Yet, there is limited understanding of how this growth will affect urban land expansion (ULE). Here, we develop a large-scale study to test explicitly the relative importance of urban population and Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth in affecting ULE for different regions, economic development levels and governance types for 300+ cities. Our results show that population growth, more than GDP, is consistently the dominant determinant of ULE during 1970–2014. However, the effect of GDP growth on ULE increases in importance after 2000. In countries with …
Firm Performance During The Covid-19 Crisis: Does Managerial Ability Matter?, Sonal Kumar, Leila Zbib
Firm Performance During The Covid-19 Crisis: Does Managerial Ability Matter?, Sonal Kumar, Leila Zbib
Finance Department Faculty Journal Articles
Challenged by the Covid-19 crisis, CEOs must rethink about how to operate and exist in the new working environment. We examine if managerial ability of the CEO impacts firm performance during the crisis period. We find a positive and significant association between the CEO managerial ability and both the cumulative raw and abnormal returns. We also find that firms with better CEO managerial ability are more resilient and have higher ROE than their counterparts. We find that the CEOs with higher managerial ability have higher pre-pandemic liquidity which in part explains the better performance amid the Covid-19 crisis.
