A Qualitative Study On The Financial Education Of Young Black Men, Sue M. May Jan 2023

A Qualitative Study On The Financial Education Of Young Black Men, Sue M. May

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Financial literacy awareness is low among young adults, and financial literacy among Black college students is significantly lower than in other groups (Singh, 2018). However, there is little to no research on why financial literacy is so low among young Black men between 18 and 25. Few studies specifically show how financial literacy and decision-making may be related to their family economics and socialization for young Black men. Using Critical Race Theory and Family Financial Socialization theoretical frameworks, this dissertation project examined a sample of seven young self-identified Black men ages 24 to 25 years old in Northern California Bay …

Marketing Analysis : A Case Study Of Byd In The Chinese Automobile Market, Yilin Wang Jan 2023

Marketing Analysis : A Case Study Of Byd In The Chinese Automobile Market, Yilin Wang

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

With the rapid development of the electric vehicle market, the Chinese Automobile industry has ushered in a huge development opportunity. BYD, as the leader of China's electric vehicles, has also achieved remarkable results. However, the fierce market competition and ever-changing consumer demand also brought challenges to BYD. Therefore, to maintain its advantages in the fiercely competitive market environment, BYD needs to formulate marketing strategies that suit its characteristics and further improve its core competitiveness. This study will focus on analyzing BYD's marketing strategy in the Chinese market and explore the reasons for BYD's rapid development in recent years. Firstly, SWOT …

So It Goes: Hauntology, Lost Futures, And Mac Miller, Ryan Hiemenz Jan 2023

So It Goes: Hauntology, Lost Futures, And Mac Miller, Ryan Hiemenz

Capstone Showcase

Hauntology is a relatively new concept born out of the current state of late capitalism, wherein it has become increasingly common for new releases of popular culture, art, and media to appease the societal desire to return to the past. First coined by Jacques Derrida in his book Specters of Marx, the term “Hauntology” was used to describe the phenomenon of the “death” of communism and how the capitalist powers that “killed” it essentially made the idea of communism immortal. They made it a specter, and ghosts cannot die. This concept was then altered by the late Mark Fisher, …

Association Of Diabetes Prevalence With Labor Force Participation Rates In Kentucky Counties, Ryan Montgomery Jan 2023

Association Of Diabetes Prevalence With Labor Force Participation Rates In Kentucky Counties, Ryan Montgomery

MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects

Compared to other states in the USA, Kentucky has one of the highest rates of diagnosed diabetes and one of the lowest levels of labor force participation. This project employs a multivariable linear regression model to estimate the correlation between county-level diabetes prevalence and county-level labor force participation rates in Kentucky counties from 2015-2019, using publicly available data from the Centers for Disease Control’s Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) and the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey (ACS). Labor force participation rates serve as the dependent variable and diabetes prevalence rates serve as the primary independent variable, alongside nine …

Neo-Whorfian Examination Of Cross-Linguistic Temporal Discounting Behavior, Piper Connelly Jan 2023

Neo-Whorfian Examination Of Cross-Linguistic Temporal Discounting Behavior, Piper Connelly

Scripps Senior Theses

This study examines differences in temporal discounting tendencies in German and French participants (recruited through Amazon Mechanical Turk) through the lens of Neo-Whorfian cognition and the Linguistic Savings Hypothesis (Chen 2013). The LSH proposes that tendencies towards future-oriented economic decisions can be cognitively explained by literal morphosyntactic conventions of one’s native language. Our experiments (sooner-smaller/larger-later choices, endowment-investment task) failed to produce results aligning with the LSH, but uncovered the importance of controlling for risk appetite when specifically investigating intertemporal choice. There are several fruitful improvements to consider for the future, such as stricter sampling, taking richer detail of time preferences, …

The Subscription Video-On-Demand Industry – Past, Present, And Future, Emily Anderson Jan 2023

The Subscription Video-On-Demand Industry – Past, Present, And Future, Emily Anderson

Scripps Senior Theses

In the past few years, we have seen a massive change in television viewing habits. More Americans subscribe to video streaming services than to cable and satellite, and most subscribe to several. While the streaming industry is rapidly growing, it is unclear where the industry is heading, and projections in the literature vary. Using data I collected and aggregated into original data sets, I explore the evidence to uncover patterns and trends. Specifically, I analyze the pricing strategies that select streaming services have used over time. My research focuses on six popular subscription video-on-demand services with similar organizational structures: Netflix, …

Esg Scores As A Measure Of Risk: The Relationship Between Environmental, Social, And Corporate Governance Ratings And The Financial Performance Of U.S. Oil And Gas Companies, Lauren Kim Jan 2023

Esg Scores As A Measure Of Risk: The Relationship Between Environmental, Social, And Corporate Governance Ratings And The Financial Performance Of U.S. Oil And Gas Companies, Lauren Kim

Scripps Senior Theses

This study investigates the association between ESG (environmental, social, corporate governance) scores on the financial performance of U.S. oil and gas companies, an industry facing significant ESG-related pressures. ESG scores evaluate a firm’s environmental impacts, social responsibility, and corporate governance practices and can be used as a form of evaluating a firm’s risk mitigation efforts. However, there is not sufficient evidence to conclude that there exists a relationship, positive or negative, between ESG scores and firm performance in this industry. Overall, the findings of this study highlight the growing interest in ESG investing and is useful for investors and firms …

Reality Tv’S Place In The Entertainment Landscape: A Look Into The State Of Contemporary Media Costs, Lila Rose Beckford Hoge Jan 2023

Reality Tv’S Place In The Entertainment Landscape: A Look Into The State Of Contemporary Media Costs, Lila Rose Beckford Hoge

Scripps Senior Theses

Previous literature has confirmed that reality television is less expensive to produce than scripted. This paper investigates both how production costs have developed overall, and how and why they differ between the two genres of scripted and unscripted television. After interviewing professionals in the industry, the results shed light on how the production processes have key differences, perhaps most important being the writer’s presence or lack thereof. The results expose reality television’s function in streaming platforms as retainment content. Streaming platforms are also examined as a catalyst for change in the industry’s landscape, bringing many disruptions along with them. Ad-based …

Heaven? Is It Worth It?: The Effect Of Belief On Religious Participation And Signaling, Claudia R. Chin Jan 2023

Heaven? Is It Worth It?: The Effect Of Belief On Religious Participation And Signaling, Claudia R. Chin

Scripps Senior Theses

Religion has long been a subject that baffles economists because of its seemingly inefficient requirements. It is hard to get one's mind around why an individual would be willing to give up secular commodities for religion, or face the strict entry costs and stigma society associates with the religion. Although many reasons have been suggested, the most widely accepted solution to why we engage in these behaviors is Religious Signaling Theory (RST). RST argues that people engage in these ineffective costs as a way to signal their commitment to the religion, and religions were utilized by society to enforce these …

Why Have There Been No Rich Women Artists? Examining The Gender Price Discount In The Contemporary Auction Market For Early Twentieth Century Mexican Avant-Garde Art, Lucy P. Bloomstran Jan 2023

Why Have There Been No Rich Women Artists? Examining The Gender Price Discount In The Contemporary Auction Market For Early Twentieth Century Mexican Avant-Garde Art, Lucy P. Bloomstran

Scripps Senior Theses

This paper examines the gender price discount for early twentieth-century Mexican avant-garde art in the contemporary auction market. A premium for art by men is established through the econometric analysis of a dataset of auction transactions taking place at major American and Mexican auction houses between 2000 and 2022. After this price discount for women’s art is established, a deep delve into gender discrimination in the creation and exhibition of Mexican Muralism and Surrealism is presented to provide possible art historical explanations for the results of the regression analysis.

An Investigation On Wage Penalties: The Effect Of Foreign-Born Status On Employee Wages, Salaries, And Incomes In The United States And Canada, Lucy C. Dustman Jan 2023

An Investigation On Wage Penalties: The Effect Of Foreign-Born Status On Employee Wages, Salaries, And Incomes In The United States And Canada, Lucy C. Dustman

Scripps Senior Theses

This paper investigates whether there is a wage penalty that negatively affects foreign-born employees in the United States and Canada, addressing the following two questions: (1) Does being a foreign-born employee result in a wage penalty in the United States and Canada? And if so, (2) How does this penalty differ across the two countries over time? With data collected from the Integrated Public Use Microdata Series (IPUMs), four separate multiple linear regression models are estimated to compare the presence of wage penalties across various industries and occupations. These analyses cover the following comparisons: the United States in 1990 and …

Association For The Promotion Of Political Economy And The Law (Appeal): Transforming Law And Economic Power, Martha T. Mccluskey Jan 2023

Association For The Promotion Of Political Economy And The Law (Appeal): Transforming Law And Economic Power, Martha T. Mccluskey

Journal Articles

This article reflects on the Association for the Promotion of Political Economy and Law (APPEAL), formed in 2012 as the first contemporary scholarly group named for the emerging field of Law and Political Economy (LPE). APPEAL organizes academics and allies to address urgent social problems by exploring possibilities for reorienting the economy toward justice, equality, and democracy. To mobilize ideas for change, APPEAL emphasizes collaborative intellectual communities. I situate APPEAL in the context of a neoliberal political movement to capture law’s power by investing in the Law and Economics message that economic power inevitably limits democracy and social justice. Though …

When Does Csr Payoff?, John A. Doukas, Rongyao Zhang Jan 2023

When Does Csr Payoff?, John A. Doukas, Rongyao Zhang

Finance Faculty Publications

We investigate whether firms engaging in corporate social responsibility (CSR) can preserve firm value during normal and unprecedented exogenous adverse events. Our evidence shows, in regular times, a negative relation between CSR engagement and firm value, but under adverse economic conditions, CSR protects firm value by decreasing firm risks. We also find that firms with high managerial attributes engage in greater CSR activities that benefit shareholders in both normal and aberrant financial times. Despite the controversy surrounding CSR, our evidence points out that CSR can be viewed as a set of intangible assets that can improve firm value across good …

Evaluating The Effect Of Nil Laws On College Athletic Department Revenue, Dylan C. Cherullo Jan 2023

Evaluating The Effect Of Nil Laws On College Athletic Department Revenue, Dylan C. Cherullo

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

This paper examines the impact of Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) laws on revenue for public Division I universities' athletic departments, challenging the long-standing debate within the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA). Utilizing panel data from the Knight Commission on College Athletics, which encompasses over 350 public Division I universities from 2002 to 2021, this study employs a difference-in-differences model. The model investigates state-level changes in university athletic department revenue from sponsorships (sponsrev), with special focus on the post-NIL law era. The analysis is bolstered by controls for various factors including ESPN’s FPI data, coach and equipment expenditures, and COVID-19 …

Reproducibility In Management Science, David Moore, Miloš Fišar, Ben Greiner, Christoph Huber, Elena Katok, Ali I. Ozkes, Management Science Reproducibility Collaboration

Finance Faculty Works

With the help of more than 700 reviewers, we assess the reproducibility of nearly 500 articles published in the journal Management Science before and after the introduction of a new Data and Code Disclosure policy in 2019. When considering only articles for which data accessibility and hardware and software requirements were not an obstacle for reviewers, the results of more than 95% of articles under the new disclosure policy could be fully or largely computationally reproduced. However, for 29% of articles, at least part of the data set was not accessible to the reviewer. Considering all articles in our sample …

Nonparametric Identification Of Differentiated Products Demand Using Micro Data, Steven T. Berry, Philip A. Haile Jan 2023

Nonparametric Identification Of Differentiated Products Demand Using Micro Data, Steven T. Berry, Philip A. Haile

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We examine identification of differentiated products demand when one has “micro data” linking the characteristics and choices of individual consumers. Our model nests standard specifications featuring rich observed and unobserved consumer heterogeneity as well as product/market-level unobservables that introduce the problem of econometric endogeneity. Previous work establishes identification of such models using marketlevel data and instruments for all prices and quantities. Micro data provides a panel structure that facilitates richer demand specifications and reduces requirements on both the number and types of instrumental variables. We address identification of demand in the standard case in which non-price product characteristics are assumed …

Misinterpreting Yourself, Paul Heidhues, Botond Koszegi, Philipp Strack Jan 2023

Misinterpreting Yourself, Paul Heidhues, Botond Koszegi, Philipp Strack

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We model an agent who stubbornly underestimates how much his behavior is driven by undesirable motives, and, attributing his behavior to other considerations, updates his views about those considerations. We study general properties of the model, and then apply the framework to identify novel implications of partially naive present bias. In many stable situations, the agent appears realistic in that he eventually predicts his behavior well. His unrealistic self-view does, however, manifest itself in several other ways. First, in basic settings he always comes to act in a more present-biased manner than a sophisticated agent. Second, he systematically mispredicts how …

The Samuels-Buchanan Correspondence And The Lost Opportunity For A Positive Public Choice Scholarship, Luke Petach Jan 2023

The Samuels-Buchanan Correspondence And The Lost Opportunity For A Positive Public Choice Scholarship, Luke Petach

Faculty Scholarship

This article revisits the debate between James Buchanan and Warren Samuels over Miller v. Schoene (1928). The initial court case—concerning the rights of government in the face of conflicting private interests—and subsequent debate between Buchanan and Samuels have important implications for the interrelations between legal and economic processes, the difference between a normative and positive theory of public choice, and the nature of public choice more generally. In published papers and private correspondence, the writings of Samuels reveal an alternative conception of public choice theory as a positive endeavor divorced from the free market normative implications of Buchanan’s work. Application …

Religion And Economic Growth: Evidence From U.S. Counties, Luke Petach, Aiden Powell Jan 2023

Religion And Economic Growth: Evidence From U.S. Counties, Luke Petach, Aiden Powell

Faculty Scholarship

This paper examines the impact of religious participation on regional economic growth. Using data on GDP growth for United States counties from the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) Regional Economic Accounts and data on county-level religious participation from the Association of Religion Data Archives (ARDA), this paper estimates the impact of religiosity on growth using two-way fixed-effects Barro regressions for the period 2000 to 2020. In our preferred specification, a ten percentage-point increase in the county religious adherent share reduces the 10-year compound annual growth rate of per-capita GDP by 0.14 percentage points (a 19% reduction relative to the sample …

Yield Spreads And Business Cycle Downturn Predictability Across Texas, 1991-2018, Aaron Dodson Nazarian, Steven L. Fullerton, Thomas M. Fullerton Jr.

Border Region Modeling Project

This study analyzes Texas state and metropolitan economic downturn predictability. Publicly available Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas dynamic factor business cycle indices are used in the analysis. Sample data cover Texas and nine of its largest metropolitan economies from January 1991 through May 2018. Dynamic autoregressive profit downturn models are estimated using the United States yield spread plus other regional and macroeconomic variables. Predictive accuracy is analyzed using in-sample model simulations. Results indicate that narrowing yield spreads, real peso appreciation, and oil price declines are generally found to increase recession likelihoods. Varying lag structures and equation specifications indicate that the …

Relationship Between Perceived Language Proficiency And Economic Life Satisfaction For Migrants, John Ndunduma Jan 2023

Relationship Between Perceived Language Proficiency And Economic Life Satisfaction For Migrants, John Ndunduma

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The United States needs migrant workers to fill the labor market gap because baby boomers are retiring from the US workforce in large numbers beginning in 2020. Approximately 2.1 million migrants came from Africa to fill the U.S. labor shortage. Many of these African migrants faced challenges with English language proficiency. There are benefits to the United States involved with increasing the economic wellbeing of migrants, such as reducing remigration, increasing the high-skilled labor force, and increasing cultural diversity. This study used Maslow’s motivational theory to test significant relationships between perceptions of English language proficiency (PELP) and economic life satisfaction …

Generational Shifts In The Perception Of Workforce Commitment, Christopher Donald Raiford

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Costs of staffing, training, and retention have always been significant expenses for U.S. corporations. The most recent addition to the workforce, the millennial generation cohort, presents a new set of challenges to leadership. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences related to the perception of commitment of millennial generation participants employed in the U.S. community banking sector. The conceptual framework included generational theory and organizational theory. Data were collected from 11 participants via semi-structed Zoom interviews. Data were analyzed for codes, categories, and themes. Results indicated that (a) millennials value leadership that invests in …
