The Conventional And The Evolutionary Doctrines Of Capital Movements And Technological Diffusion In The Process Of Economic Development, Akbar Karbassian Nov 1974

The Conventional And The Evolutionary Doctrines Of Capital Movements And Technological Diffusion In The Process Of Economic Development, Akbar Karbassian

Economics ETDs

This dissertation examines two schools of thought concerning the question of economic development. The orthodox view of development is compared with that of the evolutionary economists' paradigm with respect to philosophical foundations, theoretical structure, and empirical evidence. More specifically, the purpose of this dissertation is: (1) to provide an overview of the basic principles underlying each school's conception of the development process; (2) to restate the fundamental hypotheses concerning development that are held by the two contending schools; and (3) to analyze the validity of the two theories by examining the available historical evidence of the developmental process as it …

Private Markets And Social Control, Lloyd D. Orr Oct 1974

Private Markets And Social Control, Lloyd D. Orr

IUSTITIA

The continuing failure of society to deal adequately with its problems has led to criticism that goes beyond the imperfections of a fundamentally sound social organization. Individual economic incentive and private markets, the basics of our economic organization, are condemned as inherently destructive of desirable social goals. It may be that such criticism is naive with respect to the basic history of economic organization and the prospects for meaningful alternatives. It also may be that the "solutions" offered are frequently more authoritarian than the critics allege the present system to be. We are still left to ponder the vital, long-standing, …

New Incentives For Middle Class Philanthropy: Radical Funding For The Public Good, Samuel M. Loescher Oct 1974

New Incentives For Middle Class Philanthropy: Radical Funding For The Public Good, Samuel M. Loescher

IUSTITIA

The recent expansions in membership and budget of the American Civil Liberties Union and, even more dramatically, the explosive funding by mail of newly-founded Common Cause and Public Citizen, all suggest the presence of evolutionary forces at work in the American political economy that are encouraging a renewal of middle class associations to monitor powerful institutions and to advocate in behalf of the relatively powerless.

The rash of whistle-blowing disclosures of citizen professionals which have alerted us to the multi-billion dollar wastage on C-5As and attack carriers, the existence of My-Lais, the military assemblage of dossiers on 30 million civilians, …

Opportunity For Farmers, Clayton K. Yeutter

Clayton K. Yeutter, United States Secretary of Agriculture: Papers

I am very pleased to be here in the Missouri Delta, among some of the people who are really making our farming decisions these days. I think one of the most effective economic decisions we have made recently was to turn farmers loose to manage their own farms, and to stop trying to manage them by long-distance from Washington. The wisdom of that decision is on display here in the Missouri Delta.

Improving A Harsh Climate, Clayton K. Yeutter Sep 1974

Improving A Harsh Climate, Clayton K. Yeutter

Clayton K. Yeutter, United States Secretary of Agriculture: Papers

America's livestock industries currently are facing a harsh climate. I refer not just to the weather problems that lowered feedstuffs production this year -- though the weather has certainly been bad enough. We started the year with drought in the Southwest that hit grain sorghum production and a good bit of feed wheat. Then the heavy rains delayed corn planting -- and the long, hot dry spell struck those late-planted crops and nearly finished some of them. Now we have had problems with early frost.

The study analyzes how expanding energy production in the Colorado River Basin could affect the legal framework governing allocation, management, and use of the river’s water resources. Written by Gary D. Weatherford and Gordon C. Jacoby for the University of New Mexico Bureau of Business and Economic Research, Institute for Social Research and Development, the study examines the intersection of rising water demands associated with coal-fired power generation, oil shale development, coal gasification, and other energy-related activities with the existing body of interstate compacts, federal statutes, judicial decisions, treaties, and water rights collectively known as the “Law of the River.” …
