Core Size, Pricing, And Cost Structure, William K. Edwards May 1979

Core Size, Pricing, And Cost Structure, William K. Edwards

Economics Theses & Dissertations

This thesis presents a proof of an inverse limit theorem of the core of an economy. The implication of the theorem is that a larger core can be obtained by the formation of coalitions. A large core contains multiple Pareto optimal allocations from which society may select in order to maximize its welfare. Furthermore, this paper places an emphasis on pricing schemes that guarantee a core allocation under increasing returns to scale. Two pricing models are introduced that guarantee a non-empty core under increasing returns to scale.

Stochastic Games, Oligopoly Theory And Competitive Resource Allocation, Martin Shubik, Matthew J. Sobel

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We define discrete time sequential games which are multiperson Markov decision processes. The extant theory is sketched and compared with our assessment of research needs in dynamic models of oligopoly and other competitive resource allocation problems. A special class of economic survival games is noted.

Regional Analysis Of The Industrial Structure Of The Bear River District: An Employment Approach, Jaime B. Agbayani May 1979

Regional Analysis Of The Industrial Structure Of The Bear River District: An Employment Approach, Jaime B. Agbayani

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

With the profound interest in regional planning by local administrative units to establish a more definitive criteria for policy implementation and framework for decision analysis, this study seeks to formulate a simplistic methodological approach in the construction of a fundamental tool for socioeconomic research. By utilizing the Bear River District as a case study, we have focused on the generation of basic informational requirements for manpower planning in analyzing the size, structure and distribution of the population and labor force; changes in the employment capacity of the region; sector interdependence; and historical economic base.

Based on the results of the …

Input Substitution In The Coal-Fired Electric Power Industry, Mohammad Fatoorehchie May 1979

Input Substitution In The Coal-Fired Electric Power Industry, Mohammad Fatoorehchie

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A gradual increase in the price of oil, a decline in the supply of gas, and a lag in nuclear construction leaves coal (a potential major resource for the future energy needs) as a fuel in ample supply. The major portion of the United States' electricity is generated by steam-driven generators where steam is produced by fossil fuel-fired boilers. In 1978, 47 percent of the total electricity generation was fueled by coal, up from 43 percent in 1975. Use of coal in generation of electricity has spawned numerous research projects concerning the economics of the coal-fired electric power industry.

The Problems Of Generating Sufficient Revenue In A Rapidly Growing Small Community, Jeffery L. Memmott May 1979

The Problems Of Generating Sufficient Revenue In A Rapidly Growing Small Community, Jeffery L. Memmott

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this study is to analyze the impact of rapid growth on the various revenue and expenditure categories at the local level. A model is presented to project local revenues and expenditures based upon projected per capita income, population, and average daily attendance. The model is based upon previous models from a review of the literature with modification and additions by the author. Revenues and expenditures are estimated simultaneously reflecting the budgetary process at the local level.

Coefficients in the model are estimated using sample data from Duchesne and Uintah counties. These coefficients are then used to project …

Economic Implications Of Phenologically Timed Irrigation In Corn Production, Dawuda Tsalhatu Gowon May 1979

Economic Implications Of Phenologically Timed Irrigation In Corn Production, Dawuda Tsalhatu Gowon

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Corn production data was fitted into a Translog production function. Analysis of the resultant equation was based on what impact irrigation keyed to the crop's phenology would have on yield. A crop product cost function was developed to determine if there is profit (loss) in adapting water application to corn by phenological time period. Reasons for not adapting phenology as a key variable in irrigation include institutional constraints. Without modifying these institutional constrains, adopting the proposed technology may prove prohibitive.

On The Non-Existence Of Multiplicative Equilibrium Bidding Strategies, Richard Engelbrecht-Wiggans, Robert J. Weber Apr 1979

On The Non-Existence Of Multiplicative Equilibrium Bidding Strategies, Richard Engelbrecht-Wiggans, Robert J. Weber

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Extensive use has been made of multiplicative bidding strategies in the literature relating to auctions of mineral leases. It is shown that, generally, multiplicative strategies are not in equilibrium. It is also established that an equilibrium bidding strategy is not a function merely of a sufficient statistic for the true value, or of any other of a class of related statistics, if an individual bidder observes more than one piece of information. The general insufficiency of a single simple statistic is briefly discussed and a special class of models is identified in which a single statistic is indeed strategically sufficient.
