The Involvement Of Labor Unions In Policies Of Worker Safety And Health, Kenneth J. Dzierzawiec May 1984

The Involvement Of Labor Unions In Policies Of Worker Safety And Health, Kenneth J. Dzierzawiec

Theses

American workers are exposed to many seen and unseen hazards in their working environment. As the potential hazards in the workplace became more complicated, so too did the analysis of these hazards, as well as the means of endeavoring to protect a workers safety and health.

In the period between the 1920's and the 1960's the major thrust of Union demands were in the areas of economic gain. Although there was concern for worker welfare.

The period of the late 1960's through the early 1970's brought with it a new outlook on industrial practices as compared with worker welfare and …

A Comparison Of Collective Bargaining Issues Within The North Jersey Construction Industry, Edward G. Keane May 1984

A Comparison Of Collective Bargaining Issues Within The North Jersey Construction Industry, Edward G. Keane

Theses

This study was conducted in order to explore the recent developments within the Construction Industry Collective Bargaining process which have become evident in the southern, western, and the southwestern states.

Through a comparison of the current developments in the North Jersey area with those in the South and West, it will be suggested that the North Jersey Construction Industry will soon be dominated by Open Shop Contractors. It will be demonstrated that the primary reasons for this shift from union labor to non-union labor is due to the high overhead of union labor created by union fringe benefit funds, and …

Bureau Of Business And Economic Research: May 29, 1984, University Of New Mexico Bureau Of Business And Economic Research

BBER Publications

This report proposes a two-part economic criteria test—consisting of a Profit Protection Test and an Investment Ability Test—to help the New Mexico Environmental Improvement Division evaluate the financial "reasonableness" of mandated pollution control technologies. Rather than using rigid closure benchmarks, the framework allows regulators to set flexible, case-by-case profit-reduction breakpoints by balancing local economic impacts against environmental severity.

A General Equilibrium Expression Of The Paradox Of Thrift, Christophe Chamley May 1984

A General Equilibrium Expression Of The Paradox Of Thrift, Christophe Chamley

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

A model is presented which is derived from some observations of Keynes on the nature of capital. The allocation of investment is analyzed in two economies with random demand shocks which are identical except for the types of markets. In the first, the combination of an asset and forward markets realizes the complete set of markets. In the second, the forward markets are replaced by spot markets. Consumers and entrepreneurs are rational and markets clear. A clear definition of the paradox of thrift is proposed and its existence is proven. The substitution of spot markets for forward markets generates fluctuations …

Optimal Spending And Money Holdings In The Presence Of Liquidity Constraints And Random Income Fluctuations, Richard H. Clarida May 1984

Optimal Spending And Money Holdings In The Presence Of Liquidity Constraints And Random Income Fluctuations, Richard H. Clarida

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We examine the optimal spending behavior and money holdings of a risk averse individual who faces liquidity constraints and random fluctuations in his money income. Because of a cash-in-advance constraint, the individual has a well-defined transactions requirement for money balances. In addition, because money income is uncertain and money is — by assumption — the only available store of value, the risk averse individual also holds money balances as an inventory which can be drawn down in periods of unexpectedly low earnings. We establish the strict monotonicity properties of optimal expenditure and money demand decisions and show that the average …

Consumption, Liquidity Constraints And Asset Accumulation In The Presence Of Random Income Fluctuations, Richard H. Clarida May 1984

Consumption, Liquidity Constraints And Asset Accumulation In The Presence Of Random Income Fluctuations, Richard H. Clarida

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Recent empirical research, Flavin (1981), Hagashi (1982), has rejected the certainty-equivalent formulation of permanent income hypothesis, Hall (1978). These findings are often attributed to households’ inability to borrow completely against expected future labor income. This paper is a theoretical investigation of optimal consumption behavior under risk aversion, random income fluctuations, and borrowing restrictions. Our principle objective is to establish the existence and to investigate the properties of the stationary probability distribution which characterizes the asymptotic behavior of consumption under these conditions.

A Comparison Of The Michigan And Fair Models: Further Results, Ray C. Fair, Lewis S. Alexander May 1984

A Comparison Of The Michigan And Fair Models: Further Results, Ray C. Fair, Lewis S. Alexander

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper examines the equation-by-equation accuracy of the Michigan and Fair model using the method in Fair (1980). Emphasis is placed on examining the possible misspecification of the equations. In an earlier study, Fair and Alexander (1984), we used the method to examine the accuracy of the complete models. In the present study we are interested in the accuracy of the individual equations when considered in isolation from the rest of the model.

The Cost Effective Acquisition And Dissemination Of Market Information: A Computerized Approach, Tammy Burton May 1984

The Cost Effective Acquisition And Dissemination Of Market Information: A Computerized Approach, Tammy Burton

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Clearly, many of the developments in computerized market systems are regarded as revolutionary in an industry which has undergone diminutive changes in marketing its products and acquiring current market information. Cognizance of the agricultural market situation is pertinent for maximum production efficiency, bargaining strength, and financial success for producers.

Collectively, producers in Utah face the dilemma of receiving approximately ten percent less in cash receipts for their commodities than their counterparts in surrounding states. Market information that was attainable by producers was often obsolete, redundant, expensive, and irrelevant to the market situation in Utah.

The implementation of a Computerized Market …

Estimation Of Cost And Benefit Of Instream Flow, Parvaneh Amirfathi May 1984

Estimation Of Cost And Benefit Of Instream Flow, Parvaneh Amirfathi

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Water flowing in streams has value for various types of recreationists and is essential for fish and wildlife. Since water demands for offstream uses in the arid west have been steadily increasing, increasing instream flows to enhance the recreational experience might be in conflict with established withdrawals for uses such as agriculture, industries and households.

It is the intent of this study to contribute to an economic assessment of the tradeoff between maintaining instream flow for river recreation use and offstream uses; that is, to develop and apply a method to measure costs and benefits of water used for recreation …

Energy Analysis Of Flat Water Recreation: An Economic Assessment, Craig Leon Howell May 1984

Energy Analysis Of Flat Water Recreation: An Economic Assessment, Craig Leon Howell

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Energy analysts believe that traditional economics and energy markets undervalue the only absolutely limited resource, energy. They have produced methods to supplement or supercede economics.

However, theoretical underpinnings of these methods include an energy theory of value which is shown to be too narrow to support workable economic models or numeraires. Sample rankings of recreational values on four Utah reservoirs, using energy analysis and economic methods, show that the two methods yield opposite rankings.

Risk In Production, Mamadou Dian Diallo May 1984

Risk In Production, Mamadou Dian Diallo

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Most production activities undertaken involve a certain degree of risk. Agricultural production is particularly risky since it is susceptible to the physical vagaries of nature and all economic and social variations. For most countries, agriculture is an important and vital sector where production decisions are made under risk. Hence, decision making under risk requires careful analysis and represents an important area of study.

The present research has been directed to advance our knowledge about the consequences of risk, and the behavior toward risk in the organization of production, particularly agricultural production. This objective is achieved by a review of risk …

An Economic Analysis Of Watershed Practices: Impact Of Grazing On Watershed, In-Hwan Kim May 1984

An Economic Analysis Of Watershed Practices: Impact Of Grazing On Watershed, In-Hwan Kim

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A theoretical analysis for estimating the social cost and benefits associated with the impact of grazing on rangeland watersheds has been made in this study. A dynamic maximization model is used to derive an optimal utilization of forage by grazing, where forage utilization is treated as a decision variable and the hydrologic outputs of water and sediment are considered as a possible impact resulting from grazing.

A modeling approach to predict the quantities of water runoff and sediment yield from watersheds was employed. A water balance equation and a curve number procedure were used to predict water runoff. For the …

The Value Of Microcomputers In Agriculture, John P. Gibney May 1984

The Value Of Microcomputers In Agriculture, John P. Gibney

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this paper was two-fold. To examine the hardware and software purchased, training taken, and benefit recieved by farmers recently purchasing micro computers and to demonstrate a systematic approach of evaluating software. Over five hundred farmers that use microcomputers were surveyed on farm size and type, personal and computer system characteristics, and perceived benefit from the computer. Farmers that use computers were found to be younger, have higher incomes and benefit more from their computer systems with time than averages for all farmers. The use of printers and/or modems appeared to be justified for all levels of income. …

Costs And Benefits Of The Proposed Occupational Health And Safety Regulation: 202-Firefighting, University Of New Mexico Bureau Of Business And Economic Research

BBER Publications

This report presents a preliminary economic cost-benefit analysis regarding proposed occupational health and safety standards for firefighters in New Mexico. Looking specifically at personal equipment upgrades and medical surveillance criteria for 7,426 professional and volunteer firefighters, the study determines that the quantified costs are approximately $87,000 per year. The author concludes that this investment is modest compared to the immense socioeconomic value of preventing even a single line-of-duty death or severe injury, meaning the regulation is highly likely to yield positive net benefits.
