Unit Roots, Cointegration And Spot And Forward Rates Of The Rupees, P G Apte
Unit Roots, Cointegration And Spot And Forward Rates Of The Rupees, P G Apte
IIMB Management Review
The hypothesis of unbiasedness of the forward exchange rate as a predictor of the future spot rate has been subjected to extensive empirical testing. some researchers use the level form specification in which the actual spot rate is regressed on the k-period forward rate k periods age. While other use the percent change specification in which the k-period log change in spot rate is regressed on the forward premium /discount. The resuits from the two specifications are widely different and often contradictory. The problem lies in the presence of unit roots in both the spot and forward rate series and …

Doing Business In The Third World- With Special Reference To India, Premchander
Doing Business In The Third World- With Special Reference To India, Premchander
IIMB Management Review
Dictators, debts and declining economies are the dangers of the third world which have effectively kept away western businesses. The term third world, a product of the now defunct cold war, refers to those nations which currently constitute three fourths of the world population that are poor. This is a variegated grouping of nations with differing political systems, ranging from Westminster type democracies, neo-fascist dictatorships to monarchies -hereditary and otherwise. The sustaining economic models may be capitalist, Marxian or any acceptable mix of the two leading some writers to believe in the existence of convergent capitalism where elements of freemarket …

New Economic Policy And Public Enterprises, R K Mishra, R Nandagopal
IIMB Management Review
Encouraged by the sweeping economic reforms taking place around the world and compelled by its structural economic distortions, India is charting out a new path for its economic development. The country is evolving a New Economic policy (NEP)-to break the vicious circle Of poverty, inequity, unemployment, and slow rate of economic growth. NEP spells out package of reformatory measures in respect of Public Enterprises (PEs) contained in a series of pronouncements incorporated in Budget Documents and Economic Survey for 1991—92 and 1992—93, Industrial policy Reselution Of July 1991, and Letter on Development Policy from the Union Finance Ministe to the World …

Rolling The ‘Dice’: An Optimal Transition Path For Controlling Greenhouse Gases, William D. Nordhaus
Rolling The ‘Dice’: An Optimal Transition Path For Controlling Greenhouse Gases, William D. Nordhaus
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
The possibility of greenhouse warming has received growing attention in recent years. Many scientific bodies are calling for severe curbs on the emissions of greenhouse gases. To date, the calls to arms and treaty negotiations have progressed more or less independently of economic studies of the costs and benefits of measures to slow greenhouse warming. The plan of the present study is to develop a dynamic, global model of both the impacts of and policies to slow global warming. It is an integral model that incorporates both the dynamics of emissions and impacts and the economic costs of policies to …

Privatisation, Prasanna Chandra
Privatisation, Prasanna Chandra
IIMB Management Review
The privatisation programmes of various countries have been motivated primarily by a desire to improve efficiency, generate resources, and promote popular capitalism. It has worked reasonably well in countries with well-developed capital markets. There are several models of privatisation with certain costs and benefits associated with them. Meaningful privatisation in India calls for phasing it over a period of time in a well thought out manner and the same has been dealt in detail in this paper.

The Role Of Banks In Successful Implementation Of The Premier Export Processing Zone In Nigeria., C M. Anyanwu
The Role Of Banks In Successful Implementation Of The Premier Export Processing Zone In Nigeria., C M. Anyanwu
Bullion
The establishment and promotion of Export Processing Zones (EPZs) has been identified as a potential scheme for boosting manufactured exports. A decree (No. 34 Nigerian Export Processing Zones Decree 1991) formally establishing export processing zones in Nigeria was promulgated by the Federal Government on August 9, 1991. Consequently, an area beside the port of Calabar has been chosen as the site of Nigeria’s premier EPZ and the foundation stone was laid by the President in November,1991. This paper, therefore, examines the expected roles of the banks with a view of alerting them to the challenges ahead.

Expectations Driven Nonlinear Business Cycles, Jean-Michel Grandmont
Expectations Driven Nonlinear Business Cycles, Jean-Michel Grandmont
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
The first part of the paper is a brief introduction to the concepts and methods used in recent endogenous business cycles models. Endogenous deterministic and stochastic fluctuations are bound to occur, under increasingly plausible assumptions, in models with individual optimization, market clearing and self-fulfilling expectations when there are capital market imperfections. The phenomenon is most likely to be observed, in a nonlinear framework, when some eigenvalue(s) of the system have a modulus close to 1 (unit roots). It is argued that endogenous business cycles models have become more and more credible alternatives to describe observed fluctuations in our economies. The …
A Nine Variable Probabilistic Macroeconomic Forecasting Model, Christopher A. Sims
A Nine Variable Probabilistic Macroeconomic Forecasting Model, Christopher A. Sims
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
A model for U.S. macroeconomic time series that has been used for forecasting for several years is described in some detail. The model is a multivariate Bayesian autoregression, with allowance for conditional heteroskedasticity, stochastic time-variation in parameters, and non-normality of disturbances. It specifies the prior distribution in ways that improve on previous Bayesian vector autoregression specifications in realism and forecasting performance. The model’s record of forecasting in recent years is displayed and discussed.
