Sustained Growth In The Model Of Overlapping Generations, Eric O'N. Fisher Oct 1992

Sustained Growth In The Model Of Overlapping Generations, Eric O'N. Fisher

Economics

This paper analyzes endogenous economic growth in the model of overlapping generations. There is no bequest motive, nor are there any externalities. If the technology is convex, per capita growth can occur only if the economy has at least two sectors. This paper shows that the limiting marginal efficiency of investment determines the potential for growth and that the rate of growth depends upon the share of the capital stock devoted to investment. Sustained consumption growth can occur only under a fairly restrictive set of assumptions. There is an equilibrium with growth only if the marginal propensity to save is …

A Model Of The Link Between The Fiscal System And Singapore's Central Provident Fund In General Equilibrium, Hian Teck Hoon, Kai Lin Teo Oct 1992

A Model Of The Link Between The Fiscal System And Singapore's Central Provident Fund In General Equilibrium, Hian Teck Hoon, Kai Lin Teo

Research Collection School Of Economics

This paper demonstrates a channel through which the fiscal system interacts with the choice of CPF contribution rates to affect total savings, and hence, capital accumulation and the current account. It is shown that in the presence of a wage income tax, raising either the employee's or employer's contribution rates raises the total private earnings. On the other hand, in the presence of a capital income tax, raising the employee's or employer's contribution rates lowers total private savings. However, when we introduce a productive role for government spending, we show that an increase in CPF contribution rates under a balances …

Industry's Response To Market Liberalization In China: Evidence From Jiangsu Province, Penelope B. Prime

Faculty Articles

More than a decade has passed since China's communist party endorsed major economic reform at the Third Plenum of the Eleventh Central Committee in December 1978. The reforms have addressed many problems, but efficiency has been the focus of concern. To improve efficiency, China has introduced market mechanisms and reversed its import substitution policies. The purpose of this article is to investigate whether industrial productivity has increased as a result, using Jiangsu Province as a case study.

Construction Of Stationary Markov Equilibria In A Strategic Market Game, Ioannis Karatzas, Martin Shubik, William D. Sudderth Oct 1992

Construction Of Stationary Markov Equilibria In A Strategic Market Game, Ioannis Karatzas, Martin Shubik, William D. Sudderth

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper studies stationary noncooperative equilibria in an economy with fiat money , one nondurable commodity , countably many time periods, no credit or futures market, and a measure space of agents — who may differ in their preferences and in the distributions of their (random) endowments. These agents are immortal, and hold fiat money as a means of hedging against the random fluctuations in their endowments of the commodity. In the aggregate, these fluctuations offset each other, and equilibrium prices are constant. We carry out an equilibrium analysis that focuses on distribution of wealth, on consumption, and on price …

Time Series Modeling With A Bayesian Frame Of Reference: Concepts, Illustrations And Asymptotics, Peter C.B. Phillips, Werner Ploberger Oct 1992

Time Series Modeling With A Bayesian Frame Of Reference: Concepts, Illustrations And Asymptotics, Peter C.B. Phillips, Werner Ploberger

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper offers an approach to time series modeling that attempts to reconcile classical and Bayesian methods. The central idea put forward to achieve this reconciliation is that the Bayesian approach relies implicitly on a frame of reference for the data generating mechanism that is quite different from the one that is employed in the classical approach. Differences in inferences from the two approaches are therefore to be expected unless the altered frame of reference is taken into account. We show that the new frame of reference in Bayesian inference is a consequence of a change of measure that arises …

Deregulation And Trade Liberalization: The Indonesian Experience, Scott Fausti, Rony Bishry Sep 1992

Deregulation And Trade Liberalization: The Indonesian Experience, Scott Fausti, Rony Bishry

Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)

From 1950 to 1965, Indonesia followed an import substitution industrialization development strategy. From 1966 to the present, Indonesia has moved toward an export oriented development strategy. This paper tests the predictions of the Heckscher-Ohlin-Samuelson(HOS) model of international trade by comparing Indonesia's economic performance under two contrasting development strategies. The paper concludes that Indonesia• s economic performance under the opposing development strategies supports the predictions of the HOS model. Furthermore, the Indonesian experience under the two development strategies supports the "trade as an engine of growth" hypothesis.

The Cost Of Home Ownership In Vermont, 1975-1990, Arthur G. Woolf Sep 1992

The Cost Of Home Ownership In Vermont, 1975-1990, Arthur G. Woolf

New England Journal of Public Policy

Housing prices in Vermont, like those in the other New England states, shot up dramatically during the economic boom of the 1980s. This article investigates the causes of that price increase and focuses on the cost of home ownership in Vermont in the years 1975 to 1990. Cost of home ownership is defined as the percentage of family income needed to finance an average-price home. Although prices skyrocketed during the 1980s, the actual cost of home ownership as a percentage of income was about 15 percent greater in 1990 than it was during the mid-1970s. Housing price increases are expected …

The Effect Of Uncertainty On A Joint Product Model Of Smuggling, Scott Fausti Sep 1992

The Effect Of Uncertainty On A Joint Product Model Of Smuggling, Scott Fausti

Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)

Extending the seminal work of Bhagwati and Hansen (1973) on smuggling, Pitt (1981) developed a new approach to investigate the welfare effect of smuggling. This paper develops an extension of Pitt's original model which allows many of the interesting features of the Bhagwati and Hansen model to be revaluated within a joint product model of smuggling framework. The extension is made through the following modifications to Pitt's assumptions: 1) firms that export are free to engage in joint product smuggling or strictly legal trade; and 2) uncertainty is introduced into the model via active government enforcement. The modifications enable the …

1992 First Half Year Report On Industrial Core Projects, E. I. K. Sule, C. M. Anyanwu

Economic and Financial Review

The Industrial Core Projects are the basic capital intensity industries deliberately established by the Federal Government to provide material inputs for downstream industries. They include steel plants, refineries and petrochemical plants, paper mills, fertilizer, marble, sugar and cement companies. During the first half of 1992, the performance of most of the Industrial Core Projects was generally unsatisfactory with the exception of petroleum-based plants. Most of them operated low capacities due largely to inadequate funding. Other constraining factors were high cost of production due in part to poor infrastructural facilities and in part to a depreciated currency and stiff competition from …

The foreign exchange market(FEM) became institutionalized in Nigeria following protracted economic declines. The 1970's were generally regarded as an era of oil boom in Nigeria, when oil revenue enhanced economic development. In a continuous effort to revamp the economy, the government introduced the Structural Adjustment Programme (SAP) in 1986 as a short-term measure to last till 1988. The core component of …

A Methodology For Project Selection Using Economic Analysis And The Analytic Hierarchy Process, Jeffrey L. Battin, Thomas J. Bender Sep 1992

A Methodology For Project Selection Using Economic Analysis And The Analytic Hierarchy Process, Jeffrey L. Battin, Thomas J. Bender

Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the applicability of a multiple criterion decision making method, known as the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) , to economic analysis decisions involving project selection. Through a survey of the literature and current practices, it was determined that qualitative criteria were not adequately represented in a typical economic analysis of projects. Several MCDM methods were examined and the AHP was found to be the most promising technique to rate projects on a ratio scale. Two types of project selection problems, those involving nonmutually exclusive alternatives and those involving mutually exclusive alternatives, were examined. It was determined that the …
