Learning Society And Low Unemployment: Education And Training In Low Unemployment Countries, Anto Kerins

Books / Book chapters

Ireland is a world leader in literature, music and well bred horses. She has also done well in economic growth, foreign trade and low inflation. However, in unemployment she is also, unfortunately, a world leader. This book approaches the jobs crisis in Ireland by reflecting on the experience of five relatively low unemployemnt nations: Austria, Japan, Norway and Sweden. This book offers a wide range of ideas and proposals on how to reduce our unemployment.

Whither Hong Kong In An Open-Door, Reforming Chinese Economy?, Y. P. Ho, Y. Y. Kueh

Centre for Public Policy Studies : CPPS Working Paper Series

This paper attempts to shed some light on these intriguing questions by examining the various aspects of the economic interaction between the two sides of the Shenzhen river. We shall focus essentially on import and export relationships, with a particular reference to the unique phenomenon of trade-bound “outward processing” investment undertaken by Hong Kong manufacturers in South China. The analysis will be preceded by a description, in broad contour, of the changing overall economic structure in Hong Kong in terms of GDP and employment structure in the past decade. This helps to provide a frame of reference for assessing the …

A Test Of The Theory Of Optimal Taxation For The United States, 1869-1989, Gregory Hess Jan 1993

A Test Of The Theory Of Optimal Taxation For The United States, 1869-1989, Gregory Hess

CMC Faculty Publications and Research

A popular theory of optimal tax policies suggests that tax rates should follow a random walk. This paper extends the existing empirical literature in three ways. First, the impact on the marginal utility of consumption when the government chooses a tax plan to smooth the distorting impact of taxes is considered. Second, exogenous changes in the real rate of interest are incorporated into the government's optimal tax plan. Finally, the tax elasticity of output is not constant over time. Allowing for these changes, there is evidence that the government discounts the future, attempts to smooth the distorting impact of taxes …

Multiple Bids As A Consequence Of Target Management Resistance: A Count Data Approach, Sanjiv Jaggia, Satish Thosar Jan 1993

Multiple Bids As A Consequence Of Target Management Resistance: A Count Data Approach, Sanjiv Jaggia, Satish Thosar

Economics

In this article, we focus on the question of target management resistance and the incidence of subsequent bids. A Poisson count data model is used where the dependent variable represents the number of bids (count) received and the independent variables comprise target management actions and firm specific characteristics. Of the target management actions considered, legal defense and the entry of a white knight are associated with additional bids. With respect to firm specific characteristics, we find that a high initial bid premium deters subsequent bids. Firm size is also significant and has an interesting relationship with the number of bids …

However, as long as agriculture fulfils its economic role, it will support and promote economic development elsewhere in the country.

For Whom Is The Rural Economy Resilient? Initial Effects Of Drought In Western Sudan, Leslie C. Gray, Michael Kevane Jan 1993

For Whom Is The Rural Economy Resilient? Initial Effects Of Drought In Western Sudan, Leslie C. Gray, Michael Kevane

Economics

This discussion piece addresses two recent debates: entitlement theory and the resilience of rural systems. The authors find that in western Sudan entitlement theory provides a specific and useful framework for understanding the nature of the crisis confronting the society. Arguments about the resilience of rural systems, however, need to be more closely examined and will depend on site-specific factors. The rural economy and society of western Sudan were not found to be resilient.

Common Stock Price Effects Of Security Issues Conditioned By Current Earnings And Dividend Announcements, Timothy A. Manuel, Leroy D. Brooks, Frederick P. Schadler Jan 1993

Common Stock Price Effects Of Security Issues Conditioned By Current Earnings And Dividend Announcements, Timothy A. Manuel, Leroy D. Brooks, Frederick P. Schadler

Economics & Finance

The valuation effect of debt and equity issue announcements on stock price varies predictably with the timing of earnings and dividend reports. Issue announcements closely preceding current cash flow signals have more negative valuation effects. Straight debt announcements also have a significantly negative effect on stock price when the offer announcement closely precedes earnings and dividend releases. The evidence is consistent with a separating equilibrium where better performing firms signal superior value by announcing equity offers shortly after dividend announcements. Poorer performers appear to time equity offers just before dividend signals, which in turn are more likely to be negative.
